Rome 2 : Total War

In case you don't already know, to download the beta, right click on the rome2 icon -> properties -> betas

and then from the dropdown select patch3beta. It takes a moment to start downloading and seems to pause a fair amount during the process (unpacking maybe?) it took around 10-15 minutes total for me.

Thanks for that. I want to get in on the beta patch, but held off because I thought the only way to get it was via the official forums.

Beta patch fixes most of the issues for single player, but not all of them for co-op multi-player (my performance is significantly lower in multi-player on both the campaign map & the battle map).

That is disappointing :(

I have been waiting to play this game co-op since release, I have only had a few quick muck abouts with the single player campaign as I don't want to ruin the experience.

Is it playable even though the performance is worse? How about the dreaded de-syncs that plagued shogun 2 for the best part of a year?

Not really. There's still massive AI issues, sieges just don't work. The battle exp. is still poor. Endless missing features etc

Here's why we got this broken trash.

Tim Heaton - Studio Director (Corporate **** sucker)

"And then, through production, actually, we do what we call "Metacritic analysis." So we will break those features down into subsets, and we both look at it from a player's point of view, and a reviewer's point of view, and we'll weigh certain features as to how we see players and reviewers look at them, and they'll build up to a 100 percent score, and then we'll judge where we feel we are on those individual feature sets, and see the momentum on those and the velocity on those, too.

And so if we see one flat line and it's not where we want it to be, we then will cut it. Well, we'll cut it really late in the day. I think teams are really scared about doing 90 percent of the work and then cutting it. It's kind of like, "Well, it's nearly finished; I... I've done all the work! Please don't cut it! I'm sure I can make it better." And we're fairly brutal on that.

I'd much rather not see a feature in the game but still pay for it than risk... You know, every step of the way -- from the beginning to the end -- we're talking about a 90 percent Metacritic. That's our goal. That's what we tell Sega. And we communicate that through graphs, basically, of where we think we are."

Yikes, that doesn't read very well :(

Gutted by this game to be honest, total war is pretty much the only game I play on the PC, was looking forward to it for ages.

I'm sure patches will sort out a lot of things in 2-3 months, but I get the feeling I may be waiting on a mod like Rome 2 Total Realism or similar to get the experience I was hoping for.

I'm amazed he went on record and admitted all this.

Yeah, you'll be waiting for an overhaul like RTR for the best experience.

Well they failed miserably at everything he has said

Is this game very single threaded or just my system? I see it maxing out one core but the others only getting used slightly. Seems to result in my GPU not being fully utilised.

DavidtheDuke posted this on Total War forum, worked for me.

"On a thread I found on reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/totalwar/com...ith_fps_drops/

"I had huge fps drops and this made the game playable for me.
Just change the affinity of the rome2.exe process in "task manager" to anything less than all processors press ok and then change it back. This removes the drops for me.
For some reason this seems to spread the load evenly among the cores for me where as previously one was used to 100% while others where hardly being utilized.
Hope this will help some others.
Edit: some further explaination provided by seriousdan: "Open your task manager with ctrl+shift+ESC, go to processes, right-click the rome2.exe process and click on "set affinity..."."

You can find other optional tweaks on their website here. I did all of them but changed back to dx11, got everything running nice and smooth now. I also have my graphics similar to this guy on YouTube which helps a lot.

Anyone interested in starting a co-op campaign on hard? I have just downloaded patch 3 beta and am keen to give the game a try :)

Patch 3 beta apparently drastically reduces the turn times in multiplayer to the same as singleplayer, and tackles desync issues too.

EDIT -

I wouldn't mind doing co-op.

Send me a message in trust if you want someone to play with still, will save checking the thread repeatedly.

Have you selected unlimited video memory? As well as allowing more vram to be used it disables the automatic downscaling of graphics options and made my game a lot smoother (7970)

Thanks for this, I'll give it a shot these evening :) I'll report back on any findings.

Is co-op campaign something you sit down for a few hours and do or is it a game that lasts for weeks where you wait for your buddy to take the turns of his armies/factions?
