Is co-op campaign something you sit down for a few hours and do or is it a game that lasts for weeks where you wait for your buddy to take the turns of his armies/factions?
It typically takes longer than a single player campaign would as you do have to wait for the other player to take their turn.
In battles, if you have an army/navy within reinforcing distance of your co-op partner you can both control your own forces in the battle.
If not, you can elect to "gift" units of your army to your co-op partner during the battle for them to control (ie give them all the cavalry or similar).
In shogun 2 it works very well, I have yet to try co-op properly in Rome 2, having far too many other issues with the game
