Rome 2 : Total War

I will consider the game worth playing once crossfire works again. As it is the AI in some areas has seen enough of an improvement but performance is so bad in that game I get fed up of playing it. Crossfire was working fine until patch 6/7 then simply broke.

However, I don't actually see it coming anytime soon as every patch the devs release breaks something previously fixed (co-op desyncs this time are back in force) and then release 'Beta' patches which they make live a week later but with no fixes, just the exact same patch renamed Beta to Live. This includes several game breaking bugs which they ignore. It's truly amateur hour over there.

The only problem i have with Rome 2 is it's not challenging in a fun way, i could ramp the difficulty up to legendary but what i want is a challenge from the ai in an intelligent way, i want them to field armies that are going to be a challenge and not just because of numbers, i want them to build up their empire and be a threat. :( i dont want to have 4 groups of spearmen hold of an entire army because they all decided to rush the gate and have boiling oil poured on them, wiping out their entire army

yep its DLC and the most surprising thing is that this dlc comes with seasons. GAH! I give up with CA

I stuck with them through Rome 2's release, I tried to see all the good things and none of the bad.

CA may aswell just have proverbally put a gun to their own heads with this one.

Probably just going to go back to Shogun 2 cos this is about 10% of what that game was

Don't get me wrong I don't mind them releasing dlc with a different campaign and features like FOTS etc but Rome 2 has only been out for what 8 weeks? And this is what they come up with!

CA used to be my favourite games developer, I don't know who is making these decisions but they have just undone all their hard work from Napolean/Shogun2.

what the hell is with the new dlc! no point polishing a turd, let people enjoy the main game and you'll get more sales on dlc! simple

They have tbh allways pushed dlc rather than improving game.

Coh2 is in a similar position with dlc when original game is broken in areas.
Like you say better game more sales.

Tbh as long as silly people with no sense buy dlc they keep releasing it. do blame yourself lol

Its no different than previous titles, it shouldn't come as a surprise really as Shogun had the same with Rise of the Samurai.

I think its part of the development cycle to give the developers something to keep them busy after the game ships so there arent large gaps in the cycle where they dont need a big chunk of their workforce.

shogun was a good game to start though, a few minor bugs but the gameplay was solid, i enjoyed the expansions to that too. but rome just doesn't feel up to par

Yes but the point im making is the dev's who work on bugfixing, and the devs who work on new unit art, campaigns etc wont be the same staff. So rather than having entire teams of people sat around twiddling their thumbs after the game is released, they have them working on other tasks to keep them busy (such as this DLC).

Bought this in the sale, absolutely loved the original and Medieval 2.

The campaign stuff all seems a bit confusing and overly complex but I've not had a good bash at it yet really.

I generally just play on the campaign map and only fight when defending and the odds are against me.

Is this starting to become worth playing yet?

Have they even fixed sli support and added some anti aliasing options yet?

Edit: just checked on official forums and the answer is..... nope! Absolutely laughable.

I might just throw it in the bin now.

Caeser in Gaul and Patch 8 landed today - seems good from a brief play

Beta 8.1 by the weekend, which should fix sieges....

I'll just wait for the 8.1 beta before starting a new campaign. Thankfully they have said that it should be released within 48 hours of the ver 8 patch and released DLC.
Maybe the patch note changes of 8 and 8.1 might have greater value when playing a new campaign than I'm giving them credit for, or I got used to the humongous changes brought by the ver 7 patch...? I just feel a little underwhelmed by the changelogs.
Playing the game after the beta patch has been released will be the real test though.

disgraceful

This is the last Total war game i buy at release

really loved the original Rome one of my top 5 PC games of all time

but i cant trust CA ever again

Ive sunk about 33hrs into the game since release. Its the worst Total War game made so far. Lots of features taken out and some poorly implemented ones put in. Its a shame really as Rome period of history is my favourite, so Rome 1 was an amazing game for me. Even though I preferred M2TW more but that was because of some great mods.
Anyway I tried the new Caesar in Gaul, kinda bad with the bugs:p Purple soldiers (not had this but many have) and the tech tree is really muddled up.
Gonna wait for quite a few patches before I sit down give it a good go.
I really think once its all patched up finally its gonna be a pretty good game. And with the radious mod im sure itll be very good.

I just cant believe they ruined it so much :(

Shogun 2 and Fall of the Samurai were excellent and polished games. The gameplay was great, the atmosphere was brilliant, the graphics were superb (sli/xfire support with good scaling, Anti aliasing (MSAA), tessellation, HDR e.t.c..all features we expect now).

Then we have Rome 2 that just stripped out all the atmosphere, good features that everyone liked and on top of all that they made it run and look like ass.

This was my favourite game series and I own all the other total war games and expansions.

Biggest disappointment of the decade gaming wise in my opinion. It completely deserves it's 3.9 user score on metacritic.

I am not sure which of the two games (this one and then SimCity V) was my biggest disappointments, maybe fueled somewhat by my overinflated expectations.

I regret purchasing SimCity (even now) but I don't really regret buying TWR2 but I am still wondering how they managed to launch what they did after the final expansion of FOTS (and patches) raised the bar so highly for their previous title.
Whilst I bought Shogun II, and both of its expansions, I never really enjoyed it, due to the theatre of war and era etc. But I did appreciate that is was largely well received and I was so eager and excited when they announced the follow up for one of my favourites : RTW.
They have had some pretty dire launches in the past, which seemed to polish up reasonably well over the months, but this one has been just shameful.

Still I am looking forward to the 8.1 beta and maybe with the newly updated TTT mod and a 4TPY one as well the main campaign might be playable, in a fun way for me.

I fear that this game could be the killer for CA. Their lessons should have been learnt after Empire Total War and during the initial release of Shogun 2. If this is an issue between the developers and publishers over deadlines, then once again it looks like the developers have been forced to release an unfinished product. I unfortunately bought the game as a pre-release and feel put-off by the random crashes (up to patch 4, as I have not played since).
I still hold hopes for this game and for CA, as with Empire, the game fixes became stable and the game matured with age. Also, the jump from melee based combat to musket and other ordinance was a bold move that changed the style of play from the comfort of their previous games.
There was promise of frequent (weekly?) patches for Rome2, but on Steam (primary distributor), there is little information or update from the developers. CA have to listen to the community more and communicate more frequently. We NEED TO KNOW that they are continuing to develop Rome2 to be a mature product.
Please don't fail CA, as you are one of the few innovative game developers we still have.
