Rome 2 : Total War

Is this game worth playing yet?
I've avoided it for a while hoping it'd get patched and improved to something like we all hoped it would be. Is it close yet?
Or should I just get Shogun 2? (I tried Medieval 2 and didn't like and and skipped Napoleon and Empire, considered Shogun 2 but decided to wait for Rome 2)

Empire with Darth Mod.

Medieval 2 with Stainless Steel mod.

Shogun 2, and also with fall of the Samurai.

All are much better than this turd. I'm playing 10 year old Rome Total War with RTR mod and Metro Naval Mod, and it's still heaps better than this pant load.

CA and Sega can go **** themselves in future.

:D

It must be widespread and with all the patches you'd think they'd get around to it!

Anyway. I saw Divide Et Impera and it seems pretty good. I just started a campaign with the Radious mod pack..

Which would you guys recommend for a good realistic campaign experience? Going to play as Rome :)

Europa Universalis 4, not sure about playing as Rome though..?

sorry, but you did ask for both a good and realistic campaign experience

I should have been clearer I guess! I loved RTW and mostly played it using Europa Barborum.

When I say campaign, I guess I mean campaign and battles. Although units seem to maintain formation better than previously they still don't resemble a Roman army fighting in a strict line.

I'm after the best mod package to improve what we have in RTW2. I'm aware of Radious and i've used it a bit but have seen people using others, so rather than starting a campaign over and over with different mods to see.. I thought i'd ask..

So how to make RTW2 a good experience? :p

I felt that way after the shocking Napolean-era game.

i got rome 2 in the steam sale for £15.

its a bit buggy, but im having fun still, really do wish it would utilize more CPU cores tho, my FX chip is struggling with single core :(

the most noticeable problem is when taking the turns, a square will go black then appear again, dose not effect the game in anyway tho

Any people playing as Rome give me some tips?

It was a few patches ago that I played as Rome and I remember having that feeling of having disciplined troops that fought like a machine. I could be outnumbered and still win versus the celtic/barbarian factions. It felt just right.

In my current campaign I've been having a holiday in North Africa, haven't expanded above Arminium, left the North people to do what they like.. then suddenly out of nowhere the Arveni, Nori and another faction all marched on Italy.. Almost like they planned it! They took the new regions above and adjacent to Rome.

I had one army still in Italy and I tried to take on the invaders tactically when they can't be reinforced by the adjacent armies. But for some reason I got totally owned even though not outnumbered. I had a typical early roman army.. 5 Hastati, 5 Principes, 5 Tiarrii, 2 skirmishers, 2 Equites and a general..

Maybe it's because it is an early Roman army? I haven't upgraded to the legionaries/cohorts (Whatever you call them). Or it's because i'm using the full Radious mod. Just Rome feels a bit weak compared to the feeling I got in the early days before all the patches.

Few less infantry, few more cavalry. I'd take a ballista or 2 to deal with enemy cavalry. Then hit their infantry from behind with your cavalry when they are fighting your infantry. I probably wouldn't take the skirmishers either, more cavalry better I think.

I noticed skirmishers seem next to useless.. I suppose a lot of this might be the Radious mod. Battles last a lot longer, which is good but the fact an army doesn't seem to fall apart when the general dies seems odd. One unit still fighting when faced with a lot of Romans seems a bit odd!

I loved empire, love the era! I think shogun was only popular because it was japan. I always found it to be a complete mess tactically... but that was when it was released.

Anyway just trying this again after the patches and im not seeing much different from when it was released apart from the slight improvement in city battles. Instead of just standing passive or just trying to run through my units to the centre they are actually fighting... but they are still losing. :D

Been having a crack at it again over the holidays, its a lot better now. Not comparable to Shogun 2 by any means, but i wouldn't complain if someone were to pick it up for 50% off in a steam sale. AI performs so much better than release and I've had some really good siege battles for once with the gaulic tribes.

Considering how badly done this game is at times, I am playing it an awful lot still. I would say just over half way through the campaign now, if I can complete it, will be the first time I complete a TW game before my old man :D That is reason enough to persist.

He finished Shogun, Medieval, Rome, Medieval 2 & Empire before me. If I can get this one sorted, then flip back over to Shogun, I am only 5 - 2 down!
