Rome 2 : Total War

I just cant believe they ruined it so much :(

Shogun 2 and Fall of the Samurai were excellent and polished games. The gameplay was great, the atmosphere was brilliant, the graphics were superb (sli/xfire support with good scaling, Anti aliasing (MSAA), tessellation, HDR e.t.c..all features we expect now).

Then we have Rome 2 that just stripped out all the atmosphere, good features that everyone liked and on top of all that they made it run and look like ass.

This was my favourite game series and I own all the other total war games and expansions.

Biggest disappointment of the decade gaming wise in my opinion. It completely deserves it's 3.9 user score on metacritic.

Totally agree with Jono. I was there in the beginning with Shogun and this is a god aweful game compared to Rome, Medieval et al. CA have dropped the ball massively on this title and deserve to be punished...Shameful display...

I fear that this game could be the killer for CA. Their lessons should have been learnt after Empire Total War and during the initial release of Shogun 2. If this is an issue between the developers and publishers over deadlines, then once again it looks like the developers have been forced to release an unfinished product. I unfortunately bought the game as a pre-release and feel put-off by the random crashes (up to patch 4, as I have not played since).
I still hold hopes for this game and for CA, as with Empire, the game fixes became stable and the game matured with age. Also, the jump from melee based combat to musket and other ordinance was a bold move that changed the style of play from the comfort of their previous games.
There was promise of frequent (weekly?) patches for Rome2, but on Steam (primary distributor), there is little information or update from the developers. CA have to listen to the community more and communicate more frequently. We NEED TO KNOW that they are continuing to develop Rome2 to be a mature product.
Please don't fail CA, as you are one of the few innovative game developers we still have.

As you mentioned,i had sympathy with them for Empire as that was a MASSIVE change from the previous game. The game map was huge spanning different theatres, they had their first go at proper ranged combat with line infantry, muskets, rifles, cannons e.t.c. , they introduced a far more complex graphics engine and they also introduced naval battles (and pretty good ones at that).

I understood why there were bugs on that release but what is their excuse for Rome 2? Rome 2 REMOVES features rather than adds them.

They had such a good foundation with Fall of Samurai so all they had to do was transfer that back to a Roman setting but they have just failed on every level.

Add that to the fact that they are still releasing paid for DLC before they have even finished the game and I've had it with Total War. I pre-ordered the game expecting it to be fantastic....I won't be pre-ordering anything from CA and Sega ever again.

To be honest I am sure a lot of the blame falls on Sega's heads:

Enjoyed it myself personally - yeah theres a few niggles, but ive had some great battles, never had a problem playing online.... the one real problem ive seen is sieges, but thats the next fix hopefully. Although personally im not fussed if they burn down the gates instead of using ladders, I dont need historical accuracy to enjoy watching 1000s of men carve each other up :D

When I siege I dont use any towers, ladders, rams, artillery etc... I just sacrifice a unit or 2 in order to burn down the gates. Then mass attack to capture the gate to ensure all my men are not boiled in oil.

You can add Football manager to the SEGA list for me as well.

Deadlines and absolute need to push out a yearly release with added pointless features, streamlining and more and more bugs and game breaking exploits with each release.

In regards to Rome 2, CA have to take a lot the blame tbh. The decisions on some things are shocking and really cant be blamed on SEGA.

Installed patch and DLC yesterday, now I cant even get past the first turn phase without it crashing to desktop. Unplayable now. Wasted 9.99

I'm not being funny mate but you walked right into that one. They're not going to fix this game to anywhere close to what was promised, they will keep milking people for DLC though. No problem whatsoever there, they'll keep cranking out garbage at a tenner a go because people keep buying it.

I saw some patch 8.0 siege footage earlier - it's still laughable.

I'm playing Rome 1 it's 10 years old and it's STILL better than this ****.

It does, SEGA pushed this, earlier in this thread I posted a statement by someone very high up, head of studio IIRC and he openly admitted that the plan was to get the game out with good initial reviews and meta scores, and what he said they did again IIRC was to throw away parts of the game that got bad feedback, to ensure better early reviews.

And as we know any official reviews is worthless, and they're hand in glove with game devs and are under intense pressure to get their review out first, which of course means that the reviews lack any depth whatsoever because the reviewer hasn't got the time to delve deep into it and test features.

CA's part in this IMO is the mendacious advertising campaign they created, the bogus videos and screenshots we all saw that ensured the game was a huge advance seller. The game bears no relation to those vids and screenies. It never will either.

This game is the biggest con I have seen in over 30 years of gaming. Nothing I have played before comes anywhere close to the huge chasm between ad campaign and product as RTW2.

A con from start to finish, both CA and SEGA knew exactly what they were doing from the outset. The game they advertised and promoted never existed at all.

Is this game worth playing yet?
I've avoided it for a while hoping it'd get patched and improved to something like we all hoped it would be. Is it close yet?
Or should I just get Shogun 2? (I tried Medieval 2 and didn't like and and skipped Napoleon and Empire, considered Shogun 2 but decided to wait for Rome 2)

Reviewers give a game a score based on how much money the publisher gives them (usually through purchasing advertising space, see Gamespot & Kane 'n Lynch 2 for a stellar example). Independent reviewers give a game a score based on how afraid they are of being blacklisted from obtaining free review copies. Sadly that's just the way that it is, this is why some times the non-gaming outlets are the best guys to go to for reviews, as their income/success isn't at all based on the gaming industry. The Independent and New York Times have decent reviews for example, but then again The Sun is bloody awful with both game and movie reviews, but it is a morons newspaper however. Bloody useless bar pg.3. :D

I started playing again but already i'm fed up.

The last two battles I played, another faction landed via ships to take a settlement. However most of it's units just stood next to the ships, doing nothing. I was extremely outnumbered but as they only attacked with the first lot of units they landed I easily fought them off.. But then the rest that landed afterwards just stood on the beaches until I ran over to them..

In some cases I have to sit there with the game sped up 3x just to run about and kill the silly passive AI :( or wait till the timer runs down..

I don't remember this happening much 2 months ago... Any ideas?

That, for me, has always happened. I posted over in their official forums about it, with screenshots to illustrate the issue. I got no response...

http://forums.totalwar.com/showthre...ce-of-settlements-once-the-attack-is-underway....

...either standing passively next to the ships on the docks or just stood at the opposite part of a city not being threatened whilst the settlement falls as it is being attacked elsewhere seems to be typical.

It must be widespread and with all the patches you'd think they'd get around to it!

Anyway. I saw Divide Et Impera and it seems pretty good. I just started a campaign with the Radious mod pack..

Which would you guys recommend for a good realistic campaign experience? Going to play as Rome :)

Oh I've already got Rome 2, I've just not installed it yet (had plenty else to play). I just don't want to play it too early (i.e. before it's working well) and be disappointed because of technical issues.

Don't bother with it. In time, there will be full makeovers of this game that will make it as good as possible within the limits the cretins at CA and Sega has inflicted upon us with this abortion of a game.

Rome Total Realism will make a good game out of this, there will be other full makeovers too.

Have you tried Medieval Total War 2 with Stainless Steel mod?
