Rome 2 : Total War

At launch I was greatly disappointed but now at patch 9 I am having great fun and will probably complete my first campaign.!
I would have happily paid full price for the game as it is now.
Even though I bought Shogun II and the the expansions I never really got into the game as I much prefer the Rome time period etc.

Even at £15 this doesn't appeal to me now... Maybe when it's sub-£10... Just too worried about all the -ve comments about its battle mechanics, which is the most important aspect to me.

And the idea of having to hold random flag points just seems to undo any realism/strategy surely!?

Was ctf removed in the last patch then?
Have to agree it was a ludicrous decision to implement such a feature.

Not sure when it was removed. I got the game on release and played it only once as it was so bad. Ive been playing a campaign as the Iceni for the past couple of weeks and have not encounted a CTF yet. I must be over 10 hours into the campaign.

For less than a tenner, I might bite.

CA still don't deserve £15 for the sheer cheek of putting out the release version, the downright false promo stuff and then laying on DLC for good measure. Sure, there's probably fifteen quid's worth of entertainment here, but there's a "message" to be sent.

What was the idea behind ctf?

I think it was something to do with getting naval units to disembark and enter the battle though I am not sure. Hope the guy that implemented it got Fired.

It just stripped all tactical verve out of the game and just made it a rush for the flag.

I like my battle to take around an hour where I am deploying my archers with precision and hiding cavalry units creating choke points etc.

Also to the above I think that it was to do with concentrating the AI to a victory point on the map rather than having a fragmented and spread out battle where you could be hunting the map for that final unit - which I have done several times.

A similar gripe on the campaign map is how messy it can be to finally wipe out a faction. They have stragglers and remnants of their force going up and down my map, raiding or just hopping around and I'm having to chase them down with a stack or two, to get them cornered. Amazing how they seem to know where to stop, just outside of my attacking range each and every time - grrr.

Lol... released my first mod on workshop last night... (added House Scipii as playable Roman faction with loads of plans to create the other houses, so far had done the flags, banners & added all the Roman units to them)

A few hours later a fully functional mod adding all 3 factions, (Scipii, SPQR & Brutii) along with loads of other stuff get's released (months worth of development...).

Why do I bother... :D

thats what they were trying to avoid (old problem of the ai just sitting there etc). it created focal points. obviously removing several tactical options at the same time.

There are lots of design problems/odd design choices I think in this game but in spite of it, its still a good game. next patch should solve a few problems and get it to a state that it should have been at release.

I'm really liking the game with Patch 9, really, I have been playing my single player game for a couple of weeks on and off and I think its coming together :)

Indeed,

Give them a couple more patches & it should be reasonably well polished - most of the old issues are fixed (the key one being the turn speeds in co-op, enemies not attacking at all etc).

Sieges are vastly improved but still need some work, forced march AI requires rewriting (removing it altogether improves AI allot from what I've read).

I agree... it also annoys me how quick your generals and spys/champions die... its hardly worth upgrading them...

I have however install the 1 year per 2 turns mod from the workshop which works well (but you have to start a new game)
