Rome 2 : Total War

I played Rome and Medieval a lot, but didn't get along so well with the other new games (Empire/Shogun). Hopefully I will be suckered into playing Rome II just as much as I played the first one!

funny I was the same way - I think the total war series of games I have put more hours into then any other type of single player game (besides mmos).

But only played rome and medieval 1 and 2 ... spent a long time with MtwII - loved all the different factions and different troop types. The mods kept it up longer also.

Really looking forward to r2; although a bit put off at all the barbaric factions (including britain; which I assume most dont think it should have made it but whatever).

btw any idea when this will be released? - I thought I read somewhere june but dont want to get my hopes up

As for britain in rome 2 i think thats good. Rome did invade england and wales and even made it up to the midlands.

That's true, but the Roman invasion of Britain didn't occur until 43CE, which is outwith the timescale of the game iirc. The British tribes would have been far better served by being minor factions, making the Seleucid Empire the 8th playable faction.

Infact there are a whole host of factions that would have made more sense than the Iceni; Scythians, Cantabrians, Dacians even the Numidians. All played a greater role in the period depicted by the game.

Historical reenactment isn't really a focus of Total War though. It never has been. CA play lip service to it, but at the end of the day all they are trying to do is set up a vast sandbox that is representative of the world in the chosen time period. From the very first turn, it's less about what really happened and more about what the player wants to happen. As such, the faction choices are less about who was really important at the time, and more about who Total War customers will want to play as (which is why the Seleucids will no doubt pop up as DLC...). A British tribe will have a decent amount of consumer appeal.

As ever, CA will provide the vanilla, the mod community will add all the extras greater historical accuracy for the historians among us (me) - and of course far greater depth.

Trouble is, that takes time.

They're giving you the opportunity to conquer the British tribes well before it occurred historically.
Total Wars games are generally your opportunity to rewrite history, and play how you want to.

It would awful if you weren't allowed to attack a province until the time it happened historically.

The potential for over 100 different nations/people groups to be represented, it doesn't say that there will be 100 playable factions, well that's how I read it.

Agreed, and that's the main reason that no Total War game has ever reached it's potential thus far. All the Total War games (that I have anyway) have been massively improved by mods that strive for more historical accuracy and realism. Rome: RTR, Medieval 2: Stainless Steel, Empire: Imperial Splendour, Napoleon and Shogun 2: Darth Mod.

Precisely. Without the mod community, the Total War series would only be a small fraction as popular.

It'd be nice if Rome 2 came 'out the box', with the depth and realism of a top quality mod. But then I guess they wouldn't be able to squeeze in their old favourites like War Dogs and Flaming Pigs.

It could be argued that they're there for interaction more with the other Barbarian factions... They certainly had contact and trade with northern European tribes and even further afield and stemming from that the possibility of war, I suppose, was always there. I know the game is focussed on Rome but they are quite a part of "potential" history which is one of the game's themes...

In that respect they're justified to be within the game. Whether they should be a main / playable faction over some other choices that could have been included I'm not sure...

people often like to play their own country in these games, uk is a big market so obviously there will be a british faction.

think my first play through will be as carthage, secure north africa and spain before an all out assualt on those roman dogs.

This may be the game to make me finally upgrade from my trusty AMD PII x4 955. Suppose I'd have to upgrade my graphics card too as I doubt a 560ti 448 will hold out too well either.

ye im gonna do a degree this year and im considering upgrading using student money.

afraid it might effect my studies though....

if R2 is as immersive as Rome then ill have no choice.

immersion in last few total war games has been quite poor IMO.
