Rome 2 : Total War

I will play the Iceni at some point (love the idea of chariots), though I do prefer to be in the middle of a load of factions rather than fairly safe(ish) at the edge of the map.
Athens appeals to me with the added complication of starting as a vassal.

In Shogun2 I always preferred to play as factions like the Togugawa and Oda rather than Satsuma and Chosokabe for the same reason, I love the initial difficulty. A while back I forced myself to play these games ironman style (I think from enjoying xcom so much in this mode) and it adds so much to the game.

Once I play through the prologue campaign I'll be welll up for some coop campaigning :)

One of the greek cities for me, loved playing as Sparta in the first game and conquering everything! I just hope they stick to having the shield walls impenetrable and i'll be fine.

Just got myself a new GPU, roll on September! :D

I'll probably play as Rome or Carthage first to enjoy the new family political system, then probably the greeks or one of the barbarians depending on which one I come up against least often in the first play through.

I just went with Steam, not much more and I can say for sure it will be ready on release. I hate waiting for the game to show up when other people are getting on and playing it :p

I'm quite keen on a physical copy this time so might have to shop around, not in a huge rush to get it on release but want the pre-order bonus anyway. Cheers folks :)

Green man gaming, dvd copy was £26 when I preordered it a few weeks back and comes with all the release day dlc.

As for the first faction to play, I might just pick a name out of a hat and go with that!

I use a random number generator on MTW2 with Stainless Steel mod, you end up playing factions you wouldn't normally bother with and it makes it really interesting I've found.

I ended up with Cuman Khanate last time, a faction I never would have chosen to play, and really enjoyed the challenge, I didn't win. In the end I got sandwiched between a very strong Venice and the pitiless Mongol hordes.

It was fun though.

I was going to go straight into playing as Rome but reading this thread I am now leaning towards starting as Spartans or Britons.

Every other Total War game I've only really played the campaign once or multiple times as Briton/England... really need to get try more than one faction in this!

Not sure who I will start with, I love playing as Carthage, played more campaigns with Carthage in RTW 1 than anyone else. I think I'm gonna start as Rome.

I would not like to know how many hours I played RTW 1, just scary...

Okay I don't want to be flamed for this. It looks fantastic, really. But I think people who are used to mods like RTR will be left feeling underwhelmed perhaps? At least until the realism mods start to make an appearance. I really want this game too, as Rome and Medieval were my favourite periods, but the mods were so good they totally ruined the vanilla game for me. I can't imagine this game will be on par with Total Realism out of the box. But I am hoping I am wrong.

What does that mod add the vanilla rome?

Tried googling what it does but work internet is blocking it :(

You won't be flamed by TW fans, most of us mod the hell out of it when we can. Personally I'm with you, this to me is a new engine to mode and a clean slate in many ways. I'm looking forward to seeing what can be done with it but I'll play it vanilla to start with.

I think the main draw of Rome 2 over Rome 1 with mods is that much of the game-play will be changed significantly. So it will feel like a completely new game, not just an official mod of the original.

As noted before, every iteration of the Total War series builds upon the improvements used in the previous games.

That said, the new use of armies' traits sounds fascinating. I look forward to seeing what creative modders can do with this mechanism.
