Rome 2 : Total War

So guys, what's the problem with the battles then? Or, what did Rome 1 do right that Rome 2 isn't?

My gripe is that it seems to be about numbers and who can through the most in at once, in first rome if I managed to get into a tight spot with some hoplites I would make a defensive formation and hold my ground, in this game a shield/spear wall just gets pushed aside by shear numbers of peasants. Theres no chance of having a re-enactment of the famous 300.

Oh dear!

Forgot just how brutal war dogs are. Combine that with the AI's willingness so leave "soft" units such as archers without any protection and you can wipe out the enemies long range capabilities very quickly and from there the battle is almost certainly yours to win. Enjoying the game but at the moment not finding it as fun as previous titles. Still a good buy for less than £30

Formations held their shape, battles were correctly paced, you could tell units and opposing forces apart, tactics were of value. They were epic.

It's a totally different experience now.

The best battle experience was in Medieval TW2 with mods (Darth, Stainless Steel etc) this is just trash.

My thoughts exactly guys. I can't believe they have taken out the battlefield controls for forward back etc Its a huge step backwards in my books and I've played every total war since the original shogun.

It all looked so promising when I went to Rezzed for the unavailing last year

They've got rid of 'guard' FFS!!!

BENNY HILL TOTAL WAR!!!

:)

The battles really are atrocious - No skill or tactics needed and it's an awful blur that is over in minutes.
The battles are what make a Total War game and they've ruined them for no apparent reason. :(

I just hope that they can fix them - in the meantime I'll go and play something else.

Trash game is trash.

I think im going back to an earlier version. Don't fancy gunpowder era stuff now though :(

I want my sword and shield fix so it looks like back to Medieval Total War 2.

I'd agree that the battles aren't nearly as good as before. There used to be a great sense of achievement when you went into a battle hopelessly outnumbered with some quite specialised units and then pulled a narrow win out of the bag with some good tactical choices and use of the terrain.

I was dumbfounded last night when I tried to put my ladders against a wall and the troops insisted on trying to push them through a farmhouse and all it's associated fences. To their credit they totalled the farmhouse but suffered heavy losses as they did it with the archers pummelling them from atop the wall. Surely they should be able to walk around obvious bits of scenery?

I'm also disappointed that you can no longer chase down routing opposing troops to wipe out their army.

And where's the blood?

I must have auto resolved more battles last night than I did in the whole of Rome 1.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed playing the game but as time drags by with it I think I'll be playing it more for campaign map than the fighting unless it's fixed which kind of defeats the purpose.

Totally, i'm auto resolving almost everything already.

And as someone pointed out earlier, it was easier to spot your units from the enemies. To me, the graphics have gone a bit messy since Empires. Even King Arthur RPG game had better unit graphics than Rome 2. Medieval TW 2 and original Rome had good clean graphics, that looked very sharp on a decent rig.
The good thing about Rome 2 are the animations, each unit does look like an individual is fighting in a battle instead of a row of units shuffling.
