Rooney's Derby Goal

"Rooney revels in his own mediocrity as Nani mumbles half-hearted 'not bad' platitudes. Limp-wristed subdued applause from the Old Trafford faithful barely registers on the pitch microphones as the rest of the squad beckon to get the game underway yet again."

Fantastic technique to strike the ball like that and an excellent goal but it's not a wonder strike or something only players of Rooney's class are capable of. Fact is goals like that are scored at every level of football every single week.
Out of interest, what would you class as a wonder strike then? Because of all the brilliant solo goals I've seen, I'd personally have classed overhead kicks as the ones I see least replicated at the lower levels if at all.

Anyone can get lucky with a 30-yard screamer if they take enough shots, or eventually get a sweet connection with a volley. It's not like that kind of shot has the monopoly on luck.

Wonder strikes? Wonder goals would've been a better term to use because most people have probably connected with the ball well enough to score an overhead kick, volley or 30 yard screamer at least once in their lifetime. For players with a bit of ability, even as low as schoolboy level, these sort of things happen far more frequently.

I'd class anything that most normal people can't replicate and involves a lot of skill and/or ball control to take it past a player(s) then finish in style as a wonder goal. I'm thinking Bergkamp's goal against Newcastle, Giggs' goal in the FA Cup, Cantona's run and chip against Sunderland and Gourcuff's goal against PSG as prime examples.

Probably comes down to our own individual interpretations of what a wonder goal/strike is though :)

I'd tend to agree with that , for some strange I always appreciate and class decent chips/lobs as class goals even more so against 6ft plus keepers :)

Yeah fair enough, that makes sense, it was the term strike that had me wondering I guess.

I think I'd agree with you too, because I'd class Elmander's goal from earlier this season as better than Rooney's.

Well I saw it this morning.

I must say from the way everyone is falling over themselves I Was expecting something amazing. That goal was not what I thought.

I love how everyone is saying "oh but he shinned it" etc etc.

There is no way it couldn't have come off his shin from the angle it came from and went plus the point he made contact with the ball. Simple fact is MOST vollies, especially overheads/bicycle kicks will hit your shin aswell as the instep, just as Rooney's did.

Anyway, I would agree that it's likely to be a goal of the season contender. I would also agree that its probably his best goal ever when you consider the circumstances. Late winning goal in a derby and when having a poor game and not a particularly good season. But best goal ever in general? Not a chance. Whilst I actually applauded the goal when it went in I've scored better goals in my playing days.
