RTX 4070 12GB, is it Worth it?

Oh wow. That was quick.

It's still a ~£400 card though so....
Inflation had ended the £400 mid range GPU.
£400 in 2020 is around £500 today.

You can add £80 to a £100, on 2020 prices to account for inflation and prices today but Nvidia and AMD still have room to lower costs and make money as seen with the drop in 4070 pricing.

Question, if you were going to buy a 4070, which card would you buy?

I like the Zotac GeForce RTX 4070 Twin Edge OC, slightly above MSRP, but 5 year warranty, 8pin power connector, no extra cables or adapters needed, performs well and has a distinctive look.

True I guess. Though inflation without significant wage growth means people have less money to spend obscene amounts on GPUs...

And as you hinted at, it should still be under £500.

Them: "We have to raise prices as materials and/or everything from our suppliers is more expensive!"

Consumers: "Wait, but you said..."

It's all rubbish - people need to stop making excuses for muh "inflation". When Nvidia launched Kepler, there was a "leak" of an Nvidia document on how "expensive" TSMC 28NM was. Lots of the Nvidia uber fans justified Nvidia jacking up tiers back then, and why the GTX680 used a GTX560TI class die and why the GTX580 replacement became the doubled in price Geforce Titan. Nvidia, like Apple knows how to spin their price increases. Then the next year when AMD was just about to have Hawaii released,Nvidia released the GTX780,and then reduced the price a bit when Hawaii was released, then released the fully enabled GTX780TI.

Lots of things have dropped in price like VRAM,and lots of other components. Plus the sub 300MM2 TSMC 4NM 5NM die is probably much higher yielding than the 628MM2 Samsung 8NM die in the RTX3080,and the RTX4070 is using a hugely salvaged die with only 76% of the shaders enabled. Then you have the significantly less complex PCB which is smaller and needs less components. There is cheaper power regulation, and a need to use a cheaper cooler.

Nvidia margins are huge. Last quarter was 56.9% Gross GAAP margins. Apple was 43% and BP under 40% and yet do we hear anyone saying Apple or BP are OK increasing prices? Nvidia paid no Federal taxes in 2018,so already get taxpayer support in the US.

Just look at the pictures of the components in the FE versions.

RTX3080 PCB

The PCB is doubled sided with components on both side, and 10 GDDR6 chips.

RTX4070 PCB

Db0L012.jpg

Uses a shorter and essentially single sided PCB,with only 6 GDDR6X chips.

RTX3080 cooler

Lyk2A8t.jpg

Massive heatsink, with two cooling fans. Uses a nickel plated copper contact plate for the dGPU and a huge vapour chamber.

RTX4070

LPfOwyR.jpg
Uses a smaller heatsink with a single fan. The contact plate is not nickel plated and there seems to be no vapour chamber used.

Now consider that GDDR6/GDDR6X prices have dropped,as have a lot of components. Nvidia is saving a huge amount on the PCB and cooler alone.

Well the £ has also collapsed against the $, as has the Euro. So local pricing will be above 2020 prices even before infaltion.

What goods a 5 year warranty when you need to upgrade it to play 1440p in 6 months....

In the US where none of this applies the reception has been lukewarm. You need to stop rationalising a cash grab. People tried to rationalise Turing too, even to the extent of trying to use Brexit as an excuse. Inflation was also used for Turing too and even Kepler back in the day. The only thing inflating is Nvidia margins which are more than Apple or BP. I don't see anyone rationalising those two companies increasing pricing!

True. Whilst I think the vram thing is a bit over played, 12gb very likely won't be enough in 4 or so years.

If I was buying a 12gb card id probably be preparing myself to move on in a couple of years.

It's why the 7900xt looks like a better long term proposition. 20gb should be enough until the next gen of consoles comes out at least.
