I don't understand why people are making surprised Panda faces. We have been here before. Turing.
Have people already forgotten the last Crypto surge when Pascal prices skyrocketed too? Then Nvidia made a load of dGPUs for mining, then implied it was gaming demand. Then they got fined by the SEC:
The lo and behold they had tons of excess Pascal inventory:
Then Turing comes along at its relatively inflated prices. Nvidia barely had to price reduce its Pascal cards to clear them out because Turing was such poor value. But it appears, that the launch of Navi and maybe declining sales did force them to force them to refresh the entire range. But even with Navi,AMD rebadged the RX690 as the RX5700XT and probably increased the price too.
This time because cryptominers and the FOMO crowd had to buy at massively above RRP,Nvidia probably thinks even "discounting" the Ampere cards back to RRP is not needed. They probably believe PCMR is so weak willed they will just continue to pay the same inflated pricing. So its Turing again, but on steroids.

Crypto-mining crash leaves Nvidia with 'excess' inventory of Pascal cards
Nvidia saw a sequential decline in gaming revenue, but expects things to pick back up.
