RTX 4070 12GB, is it Worth it?

Nvidia knows there are people who will pay lots for a Nvidia card with 16GB of VRAM. Additionally, why pay for what you don't need? 12GB ought to be enough for 1440p.
They are ordering tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of trays of vram at a time, they aren't paying end consumer prices for vram.

I don't and never will get the logic in anyones argument when it comes to vram pushing up pricing in this and last gens pricing models.

If AMD is using 20Gb of vram in the same pp as a 12Gb gpu, 4Gb of extra vram at the amount they purchase at is doable for the exact same consumer purchase price as 12Gb, their margins have been off the charts for generations now, they are all raping our wallets at this point in time while rapidly increasing margins-all of them, not just Nvidia.

Some people will pay a lot more for a card with 16GB of VRAM or more. I doubt it matters that it's only 4GB VRAM more than a card with 12GB. The VRAM amount is a huge selling point for the RTX 4080 and 4090. In addition, I think most tend to overestimate the amount of difference that GDDR6X can make.

Nvidia knows there were a lot of complaints about VRAM capacity on cards like the RTX 3070 and 3080 (most customers just bought them anyway, because Nvidia was still a bit ahead of AMD in overall performance). There's a surplus of DRAM chips now (rather than a shortage), I think they will want to make the most of it.

To be honest an RTX 4070 TI with 16GB would make more sense:

If you're on a 3080, 3090 class card you're only real upgrade is a 4090. Everything else is just utter BS tbh and absolute joke with its ridiculous pricing.

3070 and below owners will have to think hard whether paying double the price for an upgrade is worth it especially if they release these with lower vram. These cards will not age well.

We can see that Nvidia as a company gets about 60% profit and AMD about 45%.

Maybe AMD being generous with RAM costs them that extra profit :p

I bet there's plently of people on here that would upgrade from a RTX 3080 10GB to an RTX 4080 16GB, if it was priced at ~£1,000.

You can pick up used 3090's for not much more, i would go that route tbh. That 24gb vram will probably come into its own later in the future.
It would be an RTX 3080 or RTX 3080 TI for me if buying a used card. Not really bothered about >12GB VRAM, I'd rather just upgrade as needed and get a better GPU eventually.

Im surprised by the amount of people looking to upgrade from 3080's or better.
Has it ever really been worth it, or necessary to upgrade every generation?

Compared to upgrading every other or even every 3 generations, the improvements are just not worth it for the money?
To me a GPU should last at least its warranty length before needing to upgraded... And 30 series cards are only just getting to 3 years old.

Just like the 3070 8GB and 3080 10gb haven't. 3060ti as well for that matter.

Like milk in fact.

:D

"Worth it" is subjective of course, but jumping from x80 Ti to x80 Ti was a pretty decent value proposition for a while. From the 780 Ti to the 980 Ti you doubled your VRAM and got 50%+ better performance, and moving to the 1080 Ti you almost doubled your VRAM again and got 70%+ better performance. Then came the 2080 Ti with no extra VRAM and 30% better performance...

Exactly this. The 4090 is all I'm interested in, anything else would be ******* money away for an underwhelming 'upgrade'.

Because £750 for a RTX 4070 is just not credible.
Have you been living under a rock for the last couple of years and forgotten NVidia's 'business model'?

800 quid for a 4070ti isn't credible, 1200 quid for a 4080 isn't credible. How credible it is isn't a factor in their thinking, they will do it regardless. Lolz @ things 'not being credible':cry:

Yep, although it just means I will spend my money elsewhere instead (just bought new TV) and go back to upgrading every 4-5 years like I used to, plus utilising the MM rather than buying new. I'm not paying through the nose for incremental upgrades.

So am I, but it has always been that way, enthusiasts not keeping a card for longer than a year or two, the difference is that nowadays they have to pay the price of a PC.

You can buy a Palit RTX 4070 TI for just under £780 now. £750 for the Founders Edition card would be ridiculous, unless the specs for the 4070 TI and 4070 end up being almost identical.

Sapphire RX 7900 XTs are readily available for £800, and are likely to come down further.
