RTX 4070 12GB, is it Worth it?

So I ordered the MSI Ventus for the other half's PC. Should be a lot quieter than the naff cooler on her existing 3060TI and since she plays at 1080p should keep her going for a while.

I'm going to stick with my 6600XT for a little while and see if AMD's midrange materialises, or if the 7900XT comes down again.

The RX7900XT has 20% more shaders than the AMD Radeon PRO W7800,so around RX6900XT level performance?

I might lose my Nostradamus level reputation for this :D but.....

Looking at TPU there is some interesting discrepancies in their own data.

Navi 32 is listed as:

4096 Shaders
4X Mem chiplets (256Bit Bus)

And yet for the 7800XT, which is supposed to be the full fat Navi 32 they list it as:

3840 Shaders
192Bit Bus (3X Mem chiplets)

Which is it? I very much doubt the 7800XT only as a 192Bit Bus, also 12GB VRam.

So if any one of them are true its the first one.

So... the
6800XT: 4608 Shaders at 2250Mhz boost, 16GB/s Memory ICs, 256Bit.
7800XT: 4096 shaders at 2800Mhz boost, 18GB/s Memory ICs, 256Bit.

6800XT has 12% more shaders
7800XT has a 24% higher clock
7800XT has 12% higher memory bandwidth.

The 7800XT is 89% of the 6800XT, add 24% higher clocks = 110% + 12% higher memory bandwidth = 124%

So the 7800XT should be a 15% to 20% faster GPU assuming some scaling loss.

That should put the 7800XT about here....

You spent over £600 for 1080P gaming when you have a 3060ti?:cry::cry:

I am still LOLing at the guy earlier above that I replied too, saying that he did not want to buy "old amd cards" refusing to buy the cheaper 6800xt and similar priced 6950xt both faster and with more Vram. And he went on to say "I purchased the 4070 and look forward to high frame rates for years to come" LOL, goodluck with that....its already borderline obsolete for AAA 1440p gaming....

Laughing at someone because you feel like you're better informed is the food for tech forums these days .. even if you buy last gen AMD cards someone will call you a fool for buying old tech.

The issue is, there's no good solution right now if you need a graphics card. I purchased the Gigabyte 4070 3 fan version, but am I happy about it? NO.. However having no choice but to endlessly wait for this illusionary tidal wave of price drops to come, then at some point I have to factor in what my time is worth.... Ah "buy AMD", yes but then you're over paying for cards that are near three years old and in two or three years when twelve gigs "might" be an issue then AMD's offerings, at this price point, will be near six years old... So everyone will have to turn settings down. At least frame generation and DLSS will make this transition easier.

IMO if you can wait .. then wait and skip this generation from Nvidia and AMD as they were designed with crypto mining in mind with sales to gamers as a distance afterthought, so enjoy your new cards and hold on to your current ones. Hopefully the next gen will bring us all too the cost to performance promise land we all want.

Its 2023, there is no excuse for not being informed about a purchasing decision unless the buyer chooses to do so and remain ignorant of the facts. So yes, I will laugh, because I am laughing at a fool, as in "a fool and their money is easily parted..." as the saying goes. Fools are there to be laughed at, as I prefer not to beleive that people are willfully ignorant of the facts given the internet is such a basic resource of information allowing buyers to make informed choices easily.

The 3060TI will go on ebay, it's not going in the bin. The 4070 was £590.

Is it far too much money for what it is? Yes.

However, the cooler on the 3060TI is incredibly loud, I've had to power limit it to 80% to get it under control, and my other half plays with speakers, not headphones. It annoys her and when Diablo 4 comes out, she's going to be doing a LOT of gaming.

Sometimes it's worth spending money to keep everyone happy!

I bought one to replace a GTX 1080
I have been after a card for 2 years now and this seems to be is a "current-gen 3080" at a not-too-awful price point
Hopefully with the 4070 I don't need a new PSU etc
I play at 1440p so seems like a decent choice in the current market

(A while ago I almost caved and bought a 3080 at £1100-1200 but stopped myself)

It's a reasonable choice (really the only choice at that price point) right now if you have a very old card.

I agree with lot of what your saying apart from what I underlined. Age doesn't necessarily factor in too much, if its a faster card with more VRAM then it always be a faster card with more VRAM regardless of its age :)

Arrogants in assuming you know best for someone else is also a trait of a fool.

I agree.. Tying to predict the future obsolescence of your purchase is where we are right now.. unfortunately.

TBH the unboxing experience is worth the asking price alone. by the way, anyone considering the 4070, FE is quality.

Looks good.

I'm still kind of tempted but with them not selling well i will wait till they fall under the umbrella of the routine discount codes on a certain auction site.

Or maybe see what the 7800XT is like.

I do like the 4090 Mini me look of the 4070.

I would have contemplated ordering one for my office PC if they would let me buy more than one card.

I did have a 7900xt in it, but I only ever ran a couple of benchmarks and never actually played any games on it in two months so seems a bit overkill. Now that got refunded (after an RMA), not sure what to replace it with.

Anyways, I’m rambling. I like the look of the 4070 FE, aesthetically, for all its shortcomings.

Hope you are happy to upgrade for £800-1000 next gen when you realise in a year or so you need more than 12gb of Vram for modern gaming @1440p, its already at this moment being consumed 100% in recent releases, so before end of 2023 its dial down those settings, £600 well spent lol...Sad that you waited all that time, only to cave to the worst possible product out of them all....at least if you are going to get ripped a new A hole over the price/value, pick a product that is going to last more than 12 months....

What was the RMA for?
