Russell Brand.

being rich doesn't make someone a hypocrite

protesting expensive rents while paying an expensive rent and contributing to the rise in rents in the same hipster area is a bit dubious

earning more money than most bankers while also protesting against the govt's fight against bonus caps is a bit dubious too

This opinion is something I seriously disagree with. If someone is rich then they lead a lifestyle to suit. I earn about 30k and live in a 550pm house. If i earned 10 times as much I would live in a 10 times more expensive house. Its simply the way life is.

If he lived in a ****hole would you say his words had more merit?

You probably lead an average life, take some time out of your boring 9-5 job and voice your opinions on things to the public. oh... you wont...

Its easy spouting this crap on an internet forum. Complaining that the system is broken isnt a bad thing, even if you are rich and not falling victim to it.

so he can only protest about expensive rents if he lives somewhere cheap?

no

just because he can afford it doesn't mean he is a hypocrite for pointing out that it must be nearly impossible for everyone else?

the rents are expensive there because it became a 'trendy' area and a bunch of media hipster types moved in... he rents there, he is one of the people pushing the rents up - I don't have a problem with this per say - he free to move where he wants and the rent can go up if an area is popular. But to then complain about the rate for rent in that area (essentially what he is doing) is a bit off. For extra points - his flat is owned by a tax avoiding off shore company too...

hardly the same - if he screws up he just sells less books
if a banker screws up the bank folds or gets bailed out for billions

in your imagination perhaps... if a banker screws up the bank folds - for how many bankers do you imagine that situation to be possible for these days... rather few

Am I missing something or does he actually do anything to champion the poor and underprivileged ?

I watched him recently getting interviewed in Downing Street where he was on about high rents and unscrupulous landlords only to be challenged and he admitted he rents despite his wealth.

He accused Nigel Farage of being a 'Pound shop Enoch Powell' on QT yet when challenged by an audience member about entering politics, he declined saying he'd be 'frightened to become one if them.'

All I seem to hear is do as I say not as I do champagne socialism from him.

Any fans out there ?

He does a lot for disadvantaged local communities but much of it is rarely reported.

I'm not sure what your point about him renting accommodation is about?

He didn't decline entering politics he declined standing for parliament - two very different things. He doesn't believe in the current system so why should he be criticised for not wanting to integrate himself even further into the system he doesn't believe in? There are plenty other ways to change things than just becoming an MP (where, lets face it, not much gets changed).

I feel you're placing your negativity in the wrong direction. This is a man who is actually using his fame to do something useful for those who can't project their voices as easily. There is nothing wrong with that.

I think you've missed the point a bit

Haha, classic! He is dead right about that. :D

what has rrussel brand actually accomplished with his life apart from earning a lot of money doing something that doesn't really bring any benefit to society.

He has accomplished very little of merit, but I give him full credit for his excellent contribution to the Committee on Addiction.

He does more than the people who are in here slating him.

An hour of his time is worth more than an hour of my time. He could earn thousands doing a chat show or something for 1 hour. Instead if he spends that 1hr bringing someones campaign to attention, then hes sacrificed more than I have.

Everyone is saying he doesnt actually do anything. What do you suggest he does? Would you like him to start a revolution? or become an MP? what exactly would he need to do for people to give him a break?

I see the public vote him a hypocrite too.

Amen

people don't realise that a guy with 9 MILLION twitter followers (yes more than Cameron) can influence political life.

9 million!

The conservative party got in to power in the UK with only double that!

So lets discuss his opinions in a more forthright manner.

TBH I love him .... he's wealthy beyond belief but yet sticks up for the small guy.

If he avoids tax then he's only doing what the tory government allow him to do as well as many of their "friends"

I'm rich and complain about inequality they say I'm a hypocrite.

I'm starting to think they just don't want to talk about inequality."

THIS A MILLION TIMES

This forum reads like a daily mail sunday club  I really thought there was smarter people out there !!!!

Just for those dumb ***** out there, were on the verge of loosing the NHS, our nation within a handful of years (defo my life time, and yours, defo defo your children), will have to pay to go to hospital, sick? got not money ? tough, your going to die. Hell, sick? got SOME money, ok we will make you better but it will cost you 30k spread out over many years at 250 a month repayments.......

What brand is doing lately is incredible, he is talking TOTAL SENSE, ignore what he is saying at your peril as the article says! If you start banging on about his personal wealth or his hair do you got some serious priority issues going on in your life!!

SERIOUS logic fails here, sort it out guys. Brands wealth is irrelevant, IT CANT BE SOLVED with money !! its the entire system that's broke!

Smart man uses fame to do good for humanity?? (its working were talking about it - so hes done the right thing) - average joe insults him without even following or discussing what he is saying! wow couldn't make it up! lol

I like him a lot. He IS pretty smart and has a decent vocabulary. I find the people who don't like him are themselves the kind who think they're smarter than they really are (ahem...so many OCUK members...ahem) :p

This, a lot of middle aged men are the ones who take a pop at him, NIMBY sorts, 40+ folks who worked their ass off in a menial job to reach management and now think the world owes them respect and anything they say MUST be correct, right? 'respected members of society' sorts..... Yes I'm describing DM readers lol

If you can't see the logic of what brand is saying, no matter who you are, no respect can be given, it's simply logical, iv yet to see a sound, sensible, logical, well thought response to the issues that brand happens to be bringing up, who's saying it is irrelevant, yet the sort of folks from paragraph one dismiss the logical info based on the human that is saying it , how strange!

I didn't realise Brand had a plan to overhaul the NHS?

His great, even bought his kids book for my nephew this xmas. It's pretty good and beautifully illustrated :-)

This is a very early video of him before he was famous and whilst battling his crack & smack addiction!!

Nazi Boy !!

that I'm not criticising him for spending money/living in an expensive place per say

So what is your criticism?

It seems that because he has wealth, you think he has no say on anything involving folk without his riches.

I honestly think a lot of people give him grief without actually watching the stuff he does. Watch his youtube channel and you should see that he actually talks a lot of sense.

dont just jump on the bandwagon.
