Russell Brand.

I just really don't understand how people can dislike him so much. I watch his YouTube channel and most of his videos are natural, they make sense, and he defends himself in a perfectly acceptable manner. Some people seem to think he's the anti Christ or something.

Earning money somehow makes you less valid. He has had a life at both ends of the scale so he's better qualified to talk than most.

The very least he has done is raise good points on drug policy and that alone deserves credit.

People's opinions are skewed by the media outlets that love or hate him depending on the day.

As a comedian he was alright. Nowadays can't stand him.

So easy to be left wing when you have money in the bank. He's hypocritical and whilst very eloquent when you break down what he says he offers no real substance or solutions. He is just basically saying 'it's wrong' a million different ways.

Takes part in a protest, leaves early evening to go to the theatre.
Complains about tax dodgers - rents a house off of a tax dodger.
Complains about capitalism and Governments then goes onto tell the press he is considering running for mayor to boost his book sales.
Comments on global warming and green issues - drives a range rover

Vast majority of people that I know who like him are lazy with no drive or ambition. Who would love to see everyone brought down the same level.

So he would be a good politician then!

Nope, he'd probably be seen as a bad one (then again not much different to many current politicians) like lots of politicians he'd quickly lose popularity if he had to make tough decisions regarding the issues he cares about... he knows that, he'd become 'one of them' It is much easier to stand in the sidelines making criticisms over certain topics.

Got nothing to do with him earning money. It's his hypocritical stand point on everything. 'Bankers get paid too much, fight them!!!!'.

The arguments on the drug policies have been around forever, long before Brand come onto the scene.

He rents his house through an estate agent. Why would be know who owned his house? The owner of mine lives at the other end of the country.

It's the same arguments from people each time. It comes down to people thinking he can't comment unless he lives in the slums, rides a pushbike and eats cold baked beans.

He was putting his own time into that new era Estate campaign. He had been hanging out with the families and trying to give them some momentum. I think that's a decent thing to do myself.

It annoys me that he is giving arguments at the panel for drug decriminalization, when there are probably 1000s of people who are more qualified and knowledgeable on the subject. Is he realy the best the pro drug decimalization side can come up with and which idiot made him the spokesman? It comes across as controlled opposition from my perspective. As long as he is on the panel drugs will never get decriminalized.

Actually re: the politician angle - he could perhaps do ok as a sort of left wing Nigel Farage, tis just if he was appointed a minister you'd likely see it all fall apart.

He talks a lot of sense about drugs and drug policy.

This

I watched the documentary on BBC 3 (the font of all highbrow knowledge i know ) about the current drug prohibition. He is a big advocate for drug reform

As another poster said, he is bringing some important political issues in to the main stream and in a way that young adults would understand - which can only be a good thing?

What makes you say that? (genuine question, not sarcasm)

He has experienced being an addict in today's world and he has been clean for 11 years (iirr) and not because of the Methadone Program but through other channels. He has visited and seen ex-addicts who have also beaten their addiction via alternative routes.

I personally think that the governments current stand on drug criminalisation is out dated and detrimental to the thousands of addicts in this country and it needs to be looked at again.

I fully support that drug addiction is a health issue - like mental health etc - and it needs to be handled as such

None of you have a clue what you are talking about. Russell Brand is Jesus and Allah all rolled into one. When I had a near death experience Russell Brand appeared and told me some on earth know me as Russell Brand, some know me as Jesus and others know me as Allah. He then told me it is not my time to die and sent me back to earth.

at least take the time to read some of the comments.

im not defending him btw, the guy is annoying but lets have some balance rather than a rage hate circle jerk and pitch fork mentality otherwise there is no discussion .. and that is against the point of GD. Unless OP just posted in order to stir up hate or confirm his own beliefs which is probably against the tos also.

has brand got a point ? what other way could he go about explaining it ?

I had always despised Brand. The worst kind of media prostitute and responsible for some of the worst televised output i had ever experienced. Not funny, just loud and crude with some camp innuendo designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator. So i became curious when started to notice his name attached to political and financial stories a couple of years ago. Since then I have followed his output and have changed my mind about the guy, in most regards.

I agree with the majority of the things he supports. Particularly with regards to the demands for a new political system and a new financial system. I believe he is genuinely passionate about the need for revolution and as a supporter of this idea, I enjoy the reach he has in terms of introducing this idea to a large number of people.

His biggest problem is his personality, and as a result of this his message, regardless of how important, will always have a reduced credibility due to the way it is delivered. The important thing for me is that he does get people talking about a lot of the major issues we faced which are rarely looked at or obtain any coverage.
