Russian airliner missing over Egypt

Add up those numbers and divide by the number of tourists who've visited Egypt since 1997.

Would you not visit New York either then?

In 2010 the country saw 14.7 million visitors. Last year that was down to 9.5 million due to unrest in the area.

I can't find any figures on tourists killed as I am sure there are individuals due to more normal crime that are killed as well as terrorism and the like, but in terms of stats I very much doubt it appears any more dangerous than many other areas.

Saying you're an idiot or ill-advised going to a muslim country on holiday is not xenophobic by any means unless you have an agenda.

Have a look at the top 10 most dangerous countries in the world and come back and tell me going on holiday there is not stupid.

I'm guessing it'll be around 8 or 9 but that's completely irrelevant. I'm fairly certain Ireland has had more terror attacks in the past 12 months than any 'muslim' country.

There are plenty 'muslim' countries that aren't dangerous or harbouring groups such as IS. You're using the terrorism card to group Islam and countries with Islamic majorities or cultures into the same bracket which is both idiotic and ill-advised. I'm off to Sarajevo in the near future for the second time this year, Bosnia can be classed as a 'muslim' country, perhaps that makes me stupid, those moderate muslims clearly can't be trusted in your view of the world.

It's interesting how opinions are formed - I live in a terribly rough area in London, there's been several stabbings on my doorstep this year, along with countless other incidents, yet I go outside every night without batting an eyelid, yet I wouldn't dare go to Egypt at the moment, not because Egypt is more/less dangerous, but because I've just been bombarded by the media about it, so it's almost hard-wired me to avoid those places.

I would love to see the Pyramids but I also like being alive so i don't plan on going near the part of the world at the moment. I did visit Dubai this year - probably the only Muslim country I would go to for the foreseeable future.

88 holidaymakers including 11 British were gunned down at Sharm in 2005

62 murdered at Luxor in 1997.

220 blown out the sky this week.

Don't think I'll be going anywhere near the place.

Well if your going to dredge up statistics to highlight just how brutal the entire country must be due to it being 'a muslim country' then how about we throw in the UK drink/drive death statistics since 1997 - over 6500 people killed on our roads in our 'non-muslim country'!!!

Anyone who comes to the UK on holiday is clearly an idiot or ill-advised. Damn catholic countries.

Anyway apologies for going off topic, it was my fault for taking the troll bait. I'm hazarding a guess that the Kremlin have practically ordered Egypt to ground our flights, the Egyptians wouldn't have the minerals to do it off their own bat.

Gregster - I'm sure she'll get back safe, the RAF and Navy will undoubtedly be on standby even if the Egyptians are under the illusion they can decide when we bring our own home.

Might want to check that, given than in any given week several car bombs obliterate 10s of people in Iraq.
Thankfully no one has been killed here for a while, outside of one murder, that looked like infighting, rather than terrorism.
There is attempted terrorism here, and hopefully those &&&& wits 'learn the &&&& up' in short order and stop it.
Unfortunately we do tend to breed retardation into our thinking here, from the politicians to the chavs, so it'll be a slow process. Be easy to train chimps than some of them.

What an awful reply.

Yes, it just shows how much mainstream media has over us. I don't live in such a place as you by the sounds of it but have the same feeling of getting behind the wheel of a car - one of the most dangerous things you can do.

Which, weirdly, I would never go to. That's only as I see no appeal in it though.

Problem is that you get the feeling that it's only a matter of time before they hit Dubai too. The security services there are very capable and motivated but there's definitely some significant support for the global jihad there - 2 of the September 11th hijackers were from the UAE after all.

you don't read the news much do you... Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan etc..

there are relatively few - the majority do present some risk to western tourists
