Ryzen 3900X thread

It's been a while. I already have the 8pack ram, just chip and board to buy.

Do I just plug it all together and turn it on and install Windows.

Do I need to change bios settings for voltage etc for cpu and ram before I do anything?

My x79 board wanted to fry my chip from the get go.. So thought I'd check

I just put it all together put Windows on ssd put chip set on and set ram to xmp and that was it
Sound card is a zx card

Getting a bit disheartened with trying to overclock my 3900X/RAM. Tried various guides, read lots of forum posts for recommendations and so on but seems everything I try either has little to no effect, reduces R10 benchmark score or is unstable. I'm by no means an expert but have been overclocking with relative success for many many years until now.

Generally getting a little over 7000 in R20. Managed to get 7500 with an all core boost of 4250 but despite numerous runs eventually turned out to be unstable and even then was unhappy with voltage at 1.45.

Even when changing RAM from 2400 to 3600 there is little change in score, e.g. 6800-7000.

Am I missing something obvious???

Latest chipset drivers and bios tried 1usmus power plan, XMP on RAM, DRAM calculator (and taiphoon) - you name it, I think I've tried it...

Not the end of the world as it does everything I could want even at stock settings with minor changes but also like to tinker and get the most out of a system as we all do.

I don't cinebench is affected that much by RAM speeds that's a good thing anyway since you only want to measure cpu speed. Cpu benchmarks like those found in 3D Mark are very much affected by ram bandwidth and latency.

I'd probably just stick with pbo+auto oc, all core oc isn't worth it for just 7% score improvement over stock imo- I get almost 20% improvement on my 3950x with a overclock but different chips run differently.

1.45v is way to high don't use that, your temps must be crazy high too. You may just have got a bad chip, bad being relative of course it still flies at stock, enable pbo and higher power level plan to get the most out of it safely

waaay to high voltage - mines is 1.31 @ 4.375ghz

Thanks for replies. I wasn't going to stay with 1.45, don't worry ;-)

I've cleared CMOS and brought things back to near stock with a bit of fettling and happy to just do the odd tinker, check stability over course of a few days and tinker again as I see fit.

Is it unusual to not be able to use DRAM calc safe or fast settings? Guess I'll change thing more gradually and see what exactly is causing the boot issues.

Was getting a bit stressed with it all last night after spending a few hours and getting nowhere! Ended up resetting everything and actually enjoying the machine before going to bed!

i honestly believe your issue lays with the ram settings as per your post, I doubt it's the CPU - try running 2133 and try 4.25 @ 1.35v and go down from there

Possibly, that increase above is a 3% increase.
That's an entire generation of intel processor development.
You're managing it by just tuning the memory.

What sort of % increases were you hoping for with OCing?

I've not seen much of an increase in scores in CB 20 but run a game BN and you'll see the difference.

Edit should have said that is with my 3700x. 3900x arriving Tuesday.
