Samsung Galaxy Note: 5.3", 1200x800 SuperAMOLED, S-PEN stylus, 2500mAh attery... *phew*

Put the official ICS on my phone using ODIN. I had stock GB on and no root. Flashed ICS and it has kept everything. Runs ultra smooth and facial unlock is cool. Much nicer font for the screen too :)

what's the con's of putting that version of ICS on my Note - compared to the version I'm supposed to get if I wait for the update - Mine is generic unlocked.

or is all the difference in the MODEM/CSC?

Noob Q's :)

Works a treat!

rzvrD.png

would have been waiting until Christmas for the OTA update to be pushed out!

:)

Idiotic question, but this is coming from a Android Noob. :o
Will it still recieve, official updates including (Patch's/Security/Feature) improvements, on a regular basis.

I Own a N7000 (German Version) + o2 Sim. (Soon too be Giff-Gaff)
Is this the ICS suitable, for my NOTE! :)
So excited about getting ICS...

PS: What do I do about importing music?
CD Rip = MP3 (320KBP/s)
Can I create a custom "Music folder" an direct Poweramp, too exclusively open that folder!

I believe there are no disadvantages, i plan to play with ROMs in the future anyway so even if I no longer receive OTA updates it wont bother me.

As above ICS is crazy fast on the Note.. even with the TouchWiz **** that Samsung has forced upon us. It's absolutely blazing!!!

I'm rethinking what tablet to buy now. It needs ICS out the box! Samsung: Galaxy Tab 7.7 ICS update please?!

and how do you find it? i can sell my s2 for around 210-230 add ~110 and get a new note and i would love a bigger hd screen but im still unsure about the size as i cant have a proper feel for it as the ones in CPW are locked in a huge cradle :(

It's size isn't a problem.

I was hasty and bought my Note last week, I bought it without even looking at it in the flesh; let alone seeing it in a security cradle! The other half wasn't amused by this potentially foolish decision. :D

However! After owning it for a week I honest can say that:

  • It doesn't feel stupidly large to use - video reviews seem to make it appear larger than what it really is. If you have large hands it's definitely a bonus, as this opens up ~90% of the screen to use single handedly.
  • I don't feel like a fool putting it up to my ear.
  • It fits inside formal trouser pockets with no real problems, and it doesn't feel uncomfortable to be there.
  • The S Pen is more useful than you would think. I think I would be lost without it!
  • When turning the screen brightness up to max, your friends and colleagues will no longer be laughing at you. :D

It's not exactly comical, but it's too big and uncomfortable for general use.

You can't use it comfortably in one hand at all. Absolutely no chance - unless your hands are huge. :p

I've been tempted to get one a few times, but the overall inconvenience that would come from the awkward handling of it have just about put me off. The 4.7" phones are really the limit.

If you are happy with the size it's great however. I could live with it but I don't think it's really worth it over the 4.7" phones. They're plenty big enough!

I got used to the size very quickly, now it feels like a normal phone when I hold it, when I went back to hold my old iPhone 3GS, I was having difficulty holding it! I didn't know where to put my ring finger and little finger! the phone was too small for all my fingers to get behind the phone comfortably!

Tbh its the screen that does it for me! don't need to buy a tablet anymore :) but I will say that coming from an iPhone and iPad, the android/google market is so appalling :'( thats the only thing I dislike about moving from Apple, but then again thats nothing to do with the phone :)

EDIT: Cant forget the amazing battery life! (in comparison to other smartphones available)

Speaking as someone that ruled this phone out the moment I saw it when it was released late last year; people make a lot of fuss over this phones size when it really isn't a problem, I was worried about the lack of one handed operation myself.

I would be whiling to bet money Robbo that if you were able to borrow the Note for a week, you wouldn't want to go back to your 4.5" or 4.7" device.

I borrowed one for a couple of days and used it as my main phone and while I found it to be excellent, I didn't feel the size was any more comfortable after quite a lot of usage.

That's not to say it's a huge issue, I could use it okay but it was just a bit fiddly!

As for people in general, a lot of people think the Galaxy S II is a "mini tablet" so I'm not sure they would ever be receptive to something of this size!

Recently though the stylus is what I've found tempting, mainly for Draw Something... :o :p

Definitely! Same with me, the Note feels normal to hold. I look at it's size as normal.

It's only when it's sat on a desk next to a iPhone that I really crack a grin! :D

Maybe you should have borrowed it for a few more days.. you never know.. ;) :D

The stylus is quite amazing. I use it daily during work! Sadly for draw something my pictures still look like crud! I guess a stylus isn't an aid for poor/lame artistic skills :D

Noob Q's :)

The version that came out today, the one i linked to, is the German release. It will be almost identical to the UK release when that comes out. Besides you could quite easily upgrade/crossgrade to the UK release when it's here.

The link I gave is for the official update. Think of it as installing the official update via unofficial means. What you'll end up with is exactly the same as if you'd updated OTA, except without waiting for it. So yes you will still get all the regular official updates without issue.

(This is assuming you're not rooted, it's different if you are. And if you do use PC Odin to manually install the update, be sure to use a good quality USB cable that securely connected, and follow the instructions closely)

Stick the music anywhere on your SD card or internal storage, in any format (MP3 FLAC, whatever you like) and it can be played by Poweramp. Simples.
