Samsung Galaxy Note: 5.3", 1200x800 SuperAMOLED, S-PEN stylus, 2500mAh attery... *phew*

With Samsung devices, the chances of bricking it are much lower than other Android devices. Rooting does void your warranty, but you can "flash" back a "Stock" firmware so that it looks brand new.

Overall I'd say the risk is pretty low but it's not 0. Yes it voids the warranty but it's not difficult to get it back to stock. In your case it's probably best to leave it, I don't think the reward is big enough. Maybe in a few months when you're closer to the end of the contract and it doesn't matter quite so much if the worst happens then you can give it a go

Wife has had a Note now for around 1 month and we've noticed a couple of small issues with it:

I've an S2 and we've usually got a laptop on downstairs and the wifi is solid but the Note seems to be constantly dropping the connection and resorting to 3g. Wouldn't be a problem on my phone but the wife had a small data usage limit due to the fact she only really uses it at home.

The second issue is the text messages seem to resort to media media messages which obviously aren't included in the contract and again are costing money.

Anyone had experiences with these issues or know of any ongoing problems?

How long are your wifes texts? If they're anything like my mums texts or essays shall I say there is a character limit for a standard SMS I think and after so many it turns into a MMS

Finally managed to get stock ICS via pc odin. Very impressed so far - seems much more responsive, particularly internet and menus, and it autorotates much more quickly. Tempted to try paranoidandroid now. :)

Galaxy Note 2 info: http://www.gsmarena.com/galaxy_note_2_allegedly_scheduled_for_october_2012-news-4334.php

Samsung scored a huge hit with their Galaxy Note, a combinatio of phone and tablet which was released late last year, featuring a large 5.3 inch screen complete with stylus. To date, some 7 million Galaxy Notes have been sold globally.

It seems that the success has spurred the Koreans to work even harder on a sequel to the popular device, as rumors have surfaced that the Galaxy Note 2 is scheduled to be released this October, exactly one year after the original.

The new device will supposedly feature a slightly larger 5.5-inch screen (as opposed to the 5.3 on the original), which will again be of a Super AMOLED variety, and have a WSXGA+ resolution (1680 x 1050 pixels).

Also rumored is an 8MP camera with improved sensor, as well as 1.5 GB of RAM, along with a new Exynos 5250 chipset, featuring a dual-core ARM-15 processor. 4G connectivity will allegedly come standard for all international units.

All of this could change, of course, so make sure to keep an eye on our homepage, where more news on the Galaxy Note 2 will be posted the moment it surfaces.

TBH the only thing that would tempt me away from the note is if they could somehow produce something about the same size as the note - maybe a little thicker if needed as its pretty thin - that somehow had another 5" screen on it that you could slide/fold out and snap into place seamlessly to give you a bigger screen to use in a tablet context while still retaining the ~5" size for when your using it as a phone. Atleast for me the current screen size and resolution is the perfect compromise any bigger and it does get too big likewise any higher density and its a bit pointless as you'd more or less have to change the DPI and lose the space to make it useful.

Ta Robbo, if Samsung don't deliver a black S3 to market:confused::mad: then so be it I'll take my money across to Samsung for one of these.... I know I was going to anyway:p

@ all those who had trouble with Kies I just tried to update my sons Ace with it and boy oh boy was my experience different to doing my Note, it was a nightmare much much harder than rooting and flashing with Odin, I vowed after one of the failures to find the recovery code to never use kies again, still it wasn't a total loss my eldest learned how to swear properly in context:mad::mad::mad::mad:

A stupid question here which I'd appreciate a bit of advice on....

I've owned my Galaxy S2 for about a year now and have been watching the galaxy note drop in price hugely in recent months and have been tempted to buy one but the thing stopping me is that when i used it in a phones4u shop, it felt really really sluggish. I wasn't sure if it had just got buggered up with being over used in the shop but it felt really juttery compared to my S2 despite the specs looking very similar ?

Anyone had both? I find the S2 pretty much perfectly smooth on ICS for everything i use it for yet even flicking through the menu's on this note seemed quite rubbish. Could anyone shed any light on this ?

If they're actually both the same/similar speed then i'll grab a note in the near future tbh. I'm convinced i'd get on great with the screen on these but any sort of slow down would drive me mad...i was one of the guys who really hated Tegra 2 tablets on 3.0

I switched to a Note from an S2 around a month ago and agree with your findings. It is slower than the S2 but I think its a fair trade off for all of the benefits it brings. I wouldn't go back.
