Hi guys, this is a very long and after have a click through a few of the pages I was wondering about upgrading the memory on these.

How much of a benefit is 2Gb over the standard 1Gb and how much would a 2Gb stick set you back that is compatible with a Laptop?

I've built a few PCs but i have NO idea about laptops only that the RAM is very different in size/shape.

If this has already been answered please point me to the page - thanks in advance.

Benefit depends on what your using your NC10 for but it certainly is a cheap, easy and worthwhile upgrade. Cost wise around £17 quid give or take for a 2GB SODIMM stick.

Well it's for my sister to take to uni lectures so she wouldn't be doing much but for sub £20 I'd imagine it'd be worth suggesting to her.

do you know the speed ratings the NC10 can take?

Does upgrading to 2gb of ram actually make a fat lot of difference? I occasionally have a few programs open at once and it doesn't seem a problem?

Usually I'm at work, so I've got FF3, Photoshop + Dreamweaver CS3, Word and one or two low power usage ones.

I havn't noticed it'd that slow, far from it, just that minimising and maximising can take a few seconds where it's normally instant. I'm guessing that this is because it's using virtual memory? Or just because I have a load of programs open at once? (The photoshop files I work with are never more than 10mb, so I doubt that it's filling the RAM up).

Also I'm guessing it has an impact on battery life? Which is a big thing for me, or will be soon as I'm commuting to Uni in september.

here is some screen shot of my samsung nc10 with 7100 build with rocketdock on top of the screen.

love the way it looks and its smooth :D

Anyone have a link for the bottom two gadgets? Can find some that do the same thing, but none look as clean as those.

EDIT
Found them on offical site

Does it make a visually noticable difference... probably not. However it will help in some situations and from a purely lazy point of view, it costs less than £20 to upgrade to 2GB, why not do it?

And no, it has no effect on battery life what so ever.

Re: Overclocking (CPU and graphics).

I should have posted this here I suppose:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18042781

Basically, using SetFSB I can 'only' get the CPU to 1.72Ghz stable. Anything over that and it either locks immediately or locks when changing from CPU-intensive to CPU-idle (i.e. stopping / starting Orthos).

Changing "CPU Power Saving" (or similar name) in the BIOS to 'disabled' improves the stability and I managed to *almost* get it stable at 1.8Ghz, but it would always fall over at some point.

Had hoped to get it stable at 1.76Ghz (i.e. +10%) but to no avail.

As for graphics - GMABooster doesn't seem to help me at all, at least in the (limited) tests I used - namely 3DMark2001 and WoW. I understand it may benefit more modern titles, like 3DMark06 and Half Life 2 etc, but I haven't tested them.

Hi guys

70 pages is a hell of a long read so I wonder if you could answer a couple of basic questions for me please :)

Does it come with a bag / case of any kind? If not what would you suggest?

What is the battery life like with battery it comes with, I read early on in the thread it came with a short battery with optional longer one for 7 hours charge.

For those that have purchased one, are you still as happy with it now?

Is it still *the* netbook to get?

I'm looking at getting one for the missus who will be using it for writing articles and old school gaming...which reminds me to ask, is it suitable for installing virtual drives etc. on for installing old games.

Can it play old games such as Dungeon Keeper 2 well?

Does it need 2GB RAM or does the 1GB suffice?

Many thanks for any replies, I'm looking at ordering one today so I'll be keeping a very close eye on this thread! :D

Yes it comes with a small cloth bag which doesn't provide that much protection. Search this thread for case ideas, there's another thread on them too. Personally I have the Swordfish Netbook Sleeping Bag, and am very happy with it.

Battery life is very good, with lowish brightness, wifi on, and just net browsing etc I can

Absolutely. Has been very useful over the last few months.

Is it still *the* netbook to get?
It's still one of the best IMO, there's offerings from Asus which have slightly better battery lives and nicer keyboards, though I haven't used these so can't really comment further.

Does it need 2GB RAM or does the 1GB suffice?
I'm running Windows 7 RC 7100 on mine and it really does benefit from the extra Gb, I never used mine with XP so I can't comment on that.

Yes, but it's no use at all. I got a zip up neoprene sleeve for it because it is always transported in my rucksack.

I get 5 hours consistantly, full brightness with Wifi on, and there is a longer life battery that you can get aswell so 7 hours doesn't seem that far away.

For those that have purchased one, are you still as happy with it now?

Yes, I absolutely love it.

I've never tried any others so can't compare.

Not felt the need to upgrade yet, it handles photoshop/dreamweaver/firefox all at the same time quite nicely so it'll do for me!

As mentioned by others, it comes with a slipcase which offers little knock protection but does offer basic scratch protection. If you have a laptop bag/camera bag it'll do fine.

All batteries are the same length IIRC, Five hours seems possible, four regularly, three is good, 12V chargers are inexpensive and the NC10 will hide in a glovebox ;)

For those that have purchased one, are you still as happy with it now?

Every time I pick it up it makes me smile. I look at the 17" widescreen next to it and wonder why I didn't buy a netbook instead.

Is it still *the* netbook to get?

At the moment, for £279 yes. Now I've bought one there will be a better one out next week for £50 less.

The keyboard is the best I've tried on a netbook. I have to slow down a bit when typing as I have large fingers but my accuracy is similar to a full size keyboard so no complaints.

Can it play old games such as Dungeon Keeper 2 well?

Dunno but it plays movies very well.

Does it need 2GB RAM or does the 1GB suffice?

CS4 squeaked at install but runs fine. A 2GB upgrade costs around £17 inc del so it's a no brainer. Only issue you will have is what to do with the old 1GB module.

Just got one myself, very happy with it (even more so once my external DVD-RW and extra RAM come from Overclockers). I'm taking a month off to do a mini round the world trip, so this is perfect for checking my emails, storing my photos and uploading them etc.

The best bit? The price. Someone put it up for sale on our internal noticeboard as she got it with a mobile broadband contract but she already had a laptop. She'd used it about 6 times and still had the screen protector on it. Bought off her at asking price, £130.

Can't complain :)

Thanks very much for the posts folks :)

Well it's arrived, we haven't had a chance to do anything with it yet apart from open the box and go 'ooooooooooooooooooooh'.

Small isn't it! Cracking keyboard though :D

Can't wait to switch it on tonight and see what the screen looks like...(hope it's not DOA lol).

Got myself one today £249 , haven't they come down in price .

Just trying to get used to a different layout than I am used to .

So far very impressed , would like vista though .
