I picked up a white NC10 today. After looking at a lot of netbooks I'd decided that the NC10 was the one which suited me most for the following reasons:
1) Some other netbooks have a resolution of 1024x576. This has the more standard 1024x600 and at this size every pixel counts.
2) I wanted an Atom processor because of the hyperthreading. I'm going to try doing some occasional Java development on train journeys and the toolsets I'd use (written in Java) are very thread aware.
3) It has the best keyboard out of all the netbooks I tried. This is both in tactile feel and also in the actual configuration. In partiucular I use the page up and down keys a lot and this is one of the few machines that has these keys in the right place and without having to press a function key. It's the only keyboard of the netbooks that I was comfortable on from the start.
4) Long battery life.
5) Matt screen. The glossy ones have more vibrant colours but I find them a pain to see in certain light.
I'll be commenting on how good it is (or not) for Java development over the next few days. It's not a problem if it can't cope as I do have other machines and a larger laptop. So it would be nice for it to be usable but not essential. It will take me a while to get Eclipse and the other toolsets installed.
I was ideally looking to get a black one. But I got this from the mm and of course had less choice over colour. I hadn't been able to see a white one in a shop previously. However, I'm really starting to love the white. I think I probably now prefer it. The case is a nice pearlescant colour and I love the white keys as they are easier to see in low light.
A few negative points so far, all of which I knew before getting it of course:
1) You can't (yet) boot from the SD card slot.
2) The hinges on the lid are not as stiff as I'd like. I'm used to Thinkpads which are very firm and necessary for commuting on a train while working. But on the train tonight the hinges seemed to be sufficient to hold it firmly in place.
3) The inbuilt speakers are dire. Really dire. Not that I'm bothered as I won't be using them much. But I have seen people elsewhere replacing them so I may consider that.
4) The screen is low resolution. Obviously! It's not a laptop replacement. The NC20 would definitely be more comfortable. But I wanted something I could put in my gym bag without too much extra bulk or weight. Daily I often carry a work laptop too so size and weight are important to me.
5) There is no internal HSDPA (you can now get them with this but the cost is prohibitive). I'm not bothered because I will be tethering it to my phone with bluetooth.
I have a 2gb module on the way. I've read conflicting reports of whether it makes much difference due to the bottleneck of the processor. But because of the potential for me to do Java development I thought I'd get it anyway.
Longer term I will probably migrate to an internal SSD when prices fall (and put this HDD in an external caddy). But it's fine for now.
So far I'm loving it and loving the white
EDIT: I've just checked out Quakelive. I was playing fullscreen 800x600, mostly low settings, fov 110, picmip 10 (very low quality). On a small FFA DM map it was playable. On a large busy CTF map it was quite a bit slower; certainly not how I'd like to play, but actually better than I expected. It could be a good laugh in a net cafe. I did try tethering it to my phone to see if I could play completely remotely but I think O2 must block that port because it wouldn't connect unless I used my wifi.
