Samsung NC10

noticed today the the side bar gadgets use up cpu power and slows down the netbook. only had 4 gadgets, clock, cpu meter, wifi meter and batter meter. removed it and it feels smoother, shame really made it look neat.

just waiting for my 2GB module to arrive, hopefully monday.

am using the sidebar with 2gb of ram and i dont get any slowdown :D

Right-O then. :D

Ordered it earlier, so I'll have my mits on it by Tuesday hopefully. :D

Little bit of fiddling with drivers required (see my post above) but it's certainly worth it.

Excellent OS. It's quick, responsive, and very pretty.

The HDD is split in two by default, so you've always got the option of dual booting XP/W7 if you so wish.

Post back if you have any problems :)

Will do. :) I've been reading back a few pages and started collecting a wealth of info. :p

I was planning on merging the partitions and installing 7 from scratch on there as I wont really use XP and it's not going to be an "essential" computer, so I've no worries if it goes wrong.

Is there reason not to do this? Presumably it's possible to restore XP Home completely from the supplied disks?

Thanks again! :)

The only thing that bugged me about 7 was the Samsung software not quite running 'natively'. It all worked don't get me wrong, but I just like the way everything works exactly as it should under XP.

That said, I know if I had persisted with it just a little while, I would still be enjoying Windows 7 on the NC10.

This is precisely what I did - my NC10 is also a secondary machine and entirely non-critical.

Use the Samsung Backup software to do a complete backup of the C: drive before you go messing around with W7. Then you can do a complete restore using the recovery disks, if necessary.

There's an OEM partition on the disk (~6Gb) that you can't get rid of, however.

I know what you mean, I'm normally the name. However with build 7075, I've got the drivers and software 'bodged' to a point where it feels like native software. So I'm happy with it.

Lots people are using 7000 on theirs, but I didn't like it for exactly the reasons you mention.

Definitely, I just got lazy and couldn't be bothered putting in the effort :o. I'm happy with it running XP for now anyways :).

7075?

I've got an ISO for 7000, I'm guessing that's out of date now then?

Is there a direct link for 7075 or does it require torrenting? I can only seem to find german versions from what I can tell.

I'm guessing it uses the same key as 7000.

Thanks again! :)

Anyone looking to know how tough the NC10 is look no further!

Yesterday mine slipped out of my hand as I carried out of the car and the corner hit a newly cemented part of the driveway !!!

There's a scrape or two on the cover and the hinge is a tiny bit dislodged but otherwise it faired quite well falling from about waist height!

The lid opens/closes fine and nothing is loose either and I've not noticed anything wrong with its running performance either so all looks good. battle scars are good amirite??

Guess I'll be owning my NC10 into the ground (literally perhaps!) then :p

7075 wasn't officially released, it was leaked, so there's no "official" download link for it.

It does indeed use the same key and it doesn't complain about it at all.

The Windows 7 thread in the Windows & Software forum is certainly worth a read, mostly the last few pages. MS build W7 daily - there might even be a newer version floating around the net now. I haven't looked since 7075 suits me fine.

Edit: mrk, that's impressive. Lucky it didn't do any more damage! Seems like a tough little thing, general build quality feels very good to me.

Edit 2: W7 build 7068 is out now apparently. Check the following link. People seem to think it's a quicker install, and faster to use. I can't comment personally as I haven't tried it. Yet.

I've had a few random freeze ups/crashes occasionally, no blue screens though, im not sure what's the cause, could it be faulty hardware or just xp playing up or something?

Im thinking of doing a fresh install of xp, would it be better to use the recovery partition or make a bootable usb stick with xp on? was considering doing a dual boot with ubuntu as well but i would prefer the easiest way tbh, i do have a bit of concern though whether its possible that the recovery partition is safe from infection just in case i have picked up something thats the cause of the crashes, should i wipe the drive or would that be pointless?

Would appreciate any help if you can?

Thanks! :)

does anyone have problems with windows live messenger sound on the nc10?... I've seen a few people mention it in various forums across the net.... basically the audio at the nc10 end is breaking up.. the video is perfectly clear, and the remote user has great audio and video.... using something like skype works fine... its literally just local sound received in WLM!?.... I've sent a question off the Samsung cust suppt, and they initially replied with "make sure you aren't running other apps etc etc", but given the issue is very specific, and seems to effect other people, I wonder if there is a driver incompatibility problem. Very annoying as I wanted to use WLM video chat while out and about!. I have re-requested help from CS but don't hold out any hope of getting to someone who actually knows what they are talking about. I have downloaded all XP updates (critical and optional), and all Samsung patches that I could find.
