SAMSUNG

I own a high-end Samsung TV which certainly has a premium look and feel to it but not everything is great. I recently had to call their technical support to try to solve an annoying software issue and I spent 40 minutes trying to explain the problem to the guy on the other end of the phone and he still didn't get it. I gave up feeling more frustrated with them than the problem itself. I also noticed on AVForums that a large amount of customers buying high-end Samsung TVs return them for various niggles. I wouldn't have got mine if it didn't come with a John Lewis 5 year warranty or I watched a lot of sport (banding issues).

My brother has one of their cheaper model TVs in the same size (46") and although the PQ isn't as good as mine, it was good for the price I thought and still a reasonably attractive TV.

I also have 2 Samsung monitors which are probably 4 years-ish old now but the quality of them is way below that of my previous BenQ monitor. The Samsungs have a cheap plastic casing that attracts dust and fingerprints and they wobble with the slightest vibration. I understand this isn't representative of what they may sell today.

I almost got a Samsung fridge freezer recently. They offered a lot of features and good designs but the prices weren't great and I was concerned about reliability.

As for their phones, I thought the S2 looked and felt cheap but my friend's S3 is quite nice. The Note II is also a very appealing product. I don't care much for their tablets but that's mainly due to the lack of tablet-tailored software on Android. I don't mind plastic if it's a good grade of plastic. The feel of it can actually be better sometimes e.g. I preferred the rounded plastic back of the iPhone 3G over the more premium but harsher feel of the iPhone 4S.

TLDR: I don't think Samsung will ever be a premium brand so long as their support/build/reliability remains poor or average but they do make feature-rich and attractive products.

Weird, I think the S2 feels way more premium in the hand than the S3, which is just running the shiny-shiny angle.

TBH not had that much hand-time with it. Sony Ericsson made some really great phones to hold in the past. I've had a number of their walkman phones but one in particular had this aluminium front and soft quality rubberised back which gave an excellent grip without ever needing to worry about finger marks or scratches.

These days I think "premium" seems to refer to styling rather than feel in phone design even though we spend far more time holding them than looking at them.

I don't really know about premium brand or not but I rate Samsung products highly. My experience of them is that they are aesthetically pleasing, do the job well, and are reliable. As a consumer, what more do I need?

I agree about the phones! My partner and my son both have a cheapy samsung ch@t and its not that bad at all! Quite impressed tbh. Im no apple fanboy, cannot understand why somebody would pay £600+ on something like that? A good £200+ android phone can do much the same and if you wanted to, just stick an apple picture on the back of the case lol. Seems like that is all your paying for anyway... the brand, the image of wealth that kinda thing lol. My son wants an apple phone and its all down to peer pressure nothing else.

Oh dear. I suppose you're one of these people who think a Vauxhall is just as nice as a Merc/BMW etc.

That's because for a 'phone' it is frankly ridiculous in size.

It's only a ridiculous size when it doesn't fit in my top jacket pocket so I have to disagree with you there!

It is pretty big though I agree, gloriously big :)

I don't think that's a fair comparison.

iP4S can be had for £450, and an S2 for £200, I wouldn't say that is in any way an accurate price differential based on specs.

There is NO phone out there that can do better than the Galaxy Note 2.

So in my mind Samsung win

Nothing to do with "winning" - some people like Sony, some like Nokia, some like Apple. You buy what is the right tool for you.

You've just done the "Apple is a premium brand" comparison. The thread will probably implode in about five minutes.

Personally, I felt sick going from my iPhone4 to a GS3. Whilst the hardware is fine the plastic gives the wrong impression right away. My iPhone still looks as prestine as the day I bought it and I never used screen protectors on it.

They are going down the right road though and I expect big things from them in future.

do you not find the gorilla glass does a very good job?
some tests i've seen look liek it takes a beating

what does the iphone4 use?

iPhone4 uses chemically strengthened glass, which is very durable against stratches but not as good as gorilla glass overall. I do find that GG on my GS3 picks up fingerprints like crazy, whereas on the i4 this wasn't the case - possibly due to the oleophobic coating. I tend to look after my phones quite well (apart from the spanner incident!) so I have never broken a phone screen.

i'd be the same with my phone. i'd never consider not using a case. as for screen protectors, i've always used them in the past on my iPod touch etc. however i recently bought a new galaxy S2. first thing i did was put a screen protector on. then i investigated the GG and i'm thinking of taking it off so i can enjoy the screen fully. having said that you barely notice screen protector, hmmmm

I had a Samsung TV, and it was lovely till it packed up completely after 2 years (I've never had a tv die before).
I had a Samsung monitor that I bought 4 years ago and only got shot of a couple of weeks ago as it had just started refusing to switch on.

I had two of the first Samsung Galaxy phones and the build quality was pathetic, both of them suffered from the screen being loose and moving in its housing when you touched it.

So no, they are not a premium brand, they are very shoddy as far as I'm concerned, and I don't think I'd buy another Samsung consumer product again.

I would place them above average but not premium, especially considering the rubbish Samwha capacitors they insist on using over Japanese ones in their TVs, which are responsible for a lot of failures.
