SAMSUNG

God dammed marketing people and their stupid marketing ways.

They've confused the world by labelling every screen an LED screen when they're not.

Every product I have bought that's Samsung is very good, so I tend to choose them over other brands, unless something else is far superior for the same price.

Yup - I don't remember boggo LCD's being called 'Fluorescent' TV's :D

LED tv's for £400; yeah right :D

One of the things I dislike about Samsung is the name and logo - it holds no 'KUDOS' value like Sony does. It's name and logo look and sound cheap.

GNex is the best looking phone they've made - with the bonus of no Samsung logo on the front.

Aren't they?

Or do you mean it's just LED backlit?

LED backlit yes, the way they're marketed means people believe they're LED panels so go round telling everyone they have an LED TV or monitor which is a bit wrong.

Big quality and price difference between an LED screen and an LED back lit one.

Out of interest, do Samsung have any full LED tellies?

IIRC they had some for around £2k for 46"

That may have been for a fully backlit LED as opposed to edge lit, can't really remember.

It's inevitable that Koreans will replace Japanese where Japanese replaced US/Europeans.

I think of Samsung as a Kenwood equivalent. Mid range do-it-all manufacturer. LG in that comparison is JVC. A brand that does much more innovation, production and supply for third party, but not necessarily a brand you would buy on label alone.

And just like Kenwood and Japanese do-it-all brands Samsung will soon realize they have to subgroup and re-brand, because people's experience with their fridge/vacuum cleaner/lawn mower will inadvertently affect their buying patterns in mid and high end audio and visual electronics, heavy equipment, ships or whatever else is manufactured under Samsung brand. Sooner or later they will have to do the Matsush.ita Electric Co (just in case you wondered why I put a dot in there - it's the ever overzealous swearword filter on this forum) thing and for the greater good split brands into new equivalents of Panasonic, Technics, Sanyo, Seiko, KDK, National, Nais, Quasar, Ramsa, Rasonic and/or MCA and Universal if they ever venture into media production like Matsush.ita.

Id say Samsungs a good brand, above average, but with everything, you get what you pay for. I wouldnt say for most products its the best for that particular sector, but generally its hard not to go wrong with a Samsung 'whatever'...

I guess its basically replaced Sony, pretty much a reversal of fortunes...

ps3ud0

And as someone mentioned before, LG's quick rise to fame could also be attributed to Sony's misfortunes.

When Samsung started selling the first flatscreen TV's was the turning point in their fortunes (in my opinion). After that they always had a strong base in the TV/monitor market. Then they expanded vigorously into various other markets like phones, cameras, tablets, laptops and emerged fairly strong in them as well.

LG always reminded me of an clone-like model of Samsung, they produced similar products which resulted in similar success.

Poor old Sony, I really thought they had the opportunity with the first PSP device to make an app environment but they prohibited it to the max. And now look everything has apps and the new Vita was forced to have them. They didnt take any initiative whereas Apple and Google did. I hope they can learn from their mistakes otherwise it could be a rocky road.

I remember some 12 years ago, so not to long back that anything Samsung they made wasn't up there with the likes of Sony & Panasonic, these days they seem to be leading with nearly everything be it TV, Mobiles ect.

So what has changed because back in the late 90's early 2000's i wouldn't touch anything made by SAMSUNG back then as in my book were mid range at best.

to me it seems Korea is now leading in the Tech front were once it was Japan, even LG are starting to come out with some decent stuff aswell.

Samsung always used to be top branded products, they've just merged into other areas hence why they're globally present in every arena.

Take LG for example who used to be Goldstar, thank Goodness they changed their brand name as Goldstars were rubbish. Now LG make some decent TV's.

If there is one company I miss and that's Pioneer. Their last TV the infamous Kuro is still hard to beat today even if Panasonic acquired it's technology.

Oh yeah I agree, Sony complete sat on their laurels when LCD/Plasma TVs came out thinking their (superior) Triniton CRTs would keep them in good stead and pretty much ignored the obvious advantages for consumers in buying flatscreen tech.

I think a lot of companies are now understanding that just bringing out the best tech isnt the be all and end all (Pioneers a good example) but ticking all the boxes including price is the way to go to get the mainstream money - Samsung have shown they are one of the best at this but I do tend to think its far more due to their success at pretty much cornering the component market in certain areas (memory and LCD tech mainly) than actually providing a superior consumer product at similar price points.

Sonys in a difficult position (but envious if they exploited it) being a media content creator aswell as a hardware manufacturer - they just need to join the dots and make their products far more of an experience. They really need to get a far better software division in too - apart from the cross media bar their stuff is so bland/not as feature rich and sometimes awkward to use...

Edge-Lit/Backlit - In the end it's still an LCD panel. Proper LED TV's - i.e. OLED has no backlight and cost something like £10k+ :)

The note II is nice but the GS 3 is butt ugly IMO.

Erm... What??

^^^ :D

I think we all (myself included) we're disappointed when the SGS3 was first unveiled at how bland and curvy it was - we we're expecting lushness like Samsung 8 Series TV's.

My S3 - I'd give it a 6/10 for asthetics

So true, and despite what Sony thinks the XrossMediaBar is actually decimating their market. I don't particularly like it, but I'm a PS3 user, so it doesn't bother me, but anecdotally my mum, my girlfriend, her sister, her mum, none of them can ever find anything with XMB. My mum says it's the most counter intuitive thing ever, items are never in the right place and it's like doing puzzle every time she wants to watch something. It's sometimes entertaining to watch them struggling, but it's a safe bet none of them will ever buy anything with XMB again.
