School Leavers to swear oath to Queen!

We have over 30 million tourists visit our country per year, that's the 6th highest in the world.

You just have to look around in London to see the affect that our royal family has had on the industry. They're a huge part of our history, and although they're not such a big part of society today their mere presence serves to maintain the tradition that our country is built on.

Still not good enough. I'll not be convinced until I see official figures. Whilst I reckon you may be right I will not be convinced nor will I base an argument on that reckoning until I see some rock solid figures

How many of the 30 million come specifically to see Royalty?

Fair enough :p

Gotta admit though, people definitely don't come here for our weather or our night life :D

No, but to see the country that has deep, deep roots with the royal family. Britain is pretty much the only country that still has a proper royal family.

As I said, they're certainly not flying over to sample our sunny beaches.

He already has silly, he wasn't voted for, he just turned round and said "I'm running the country" even when he clearly cannot run himself...

the country voted labour in the last election, brown is now the face of labour, and will continue to be until the next election, unless he stands down before then (a guy can hope cant he?) so technically we *did vote for him (well, i didn't i was to young, and you may not have done.

i personally will be voting 'monster raving looney party'

History, yes. But serving to maintain the tradition our country is built on?! What, of a horribly ingrained class system?

And they say we have democracy in this country

New leaders though are supposed to be voted for within the party, but he wasn't for some reason, probably stole all their lunch money and threatened to stamp on all their toys :p

My father would be absolutely raging at this. My family's come over from Ireland and I grew up here. If I was made to do this oath, it would be a slap in the face to my family and I would refuse. What would they do? Kick me out in a fit of authoritarian rage and be ridiculed by the rest of the civilised world? Don't make me laugh. To the Irish in the UK this is rather disgusting (and to a lot of others I'd imagine). Brown, you're a freaking idiot. Just let the others take your spot already. How you've managed to come from being the far more attractive alternative to Blair with tons more integrity to being the most unliked leader since WW2 is insane. Stop with these crackpot schemes already. You want to do something about this percieved 'identity crisis' when there are none, kick the illegal immigrants out and impose limits on future occurences.

Hah, true. Having lived in Windsor I have seen first hand the amount of tourism generated by the royal family and it is quite amazing. During the summer the town centre was like a mosh pit there were that many people.

So let me get this straight in my head "God save the Queen" is the anthem for the UK on a whole if this is true why do we have to sing it and the rest of the UK sings their own anthems?

Now that's a totally different question. I think that God Save The Queen should be kept for events where the UK is participating as a whole e.g. Olympics etc. I don't think it entirely fair that England doesn't have a national anthem specific to it while the rest of the Home Nations do, if the majority of English polled (let's assume a vote could be held on it and the turnout is more than the feeble results we have for general elections) wanted something different then they should have it, if not then God Save The Queen can remain.

some figures

For someone who need never carry money, the Queen gets quite a bit of the government's spare change.

According to official estimates, the Royal Family costs the public £37.4 million each year, or £1.18 for each taxpayer.

Other estimates place this figure at £150 million per year to factor in security costs, grants, unpaid tax and the local cost of a royal visit - £4.74 for each taxpayer each year.

But the estate did turn a profit of £147.7m in 2000-01, all of which was credited to public funds.

it's not a brilliant match but it shows there isn't a great deal of difference from what she takes to what she puts back in.

all i can say is: i want my 4.74 per year back

That estimate of their income was also 7 years ago.

Add inflation to that and you'll see it's over £160m.

That's assuming that the official estimates are incorrect.

i know there was a few years gap, which is why i said it wasn't a brilliant match, even so, it does show how little they actually return to the country.

in the medieval period the monarchy were expected to fund the entire country out of there own pockets, bar special taxes levied from the public to fund wars

I don't, that money goes towards Prince Philip and where else do you get so much entertainment for less than a fiver? Even going to the cinema now costs me about £7 and that is for 90-120 minutes of a film, with gaffes by Prince Philip I'm saving over £2 a year and he can be almost guaranteed to spread the amusement throughout the year.
