Screwed up

Oh yeah after they let me drive home

Andy

Well, certainly hope that wasn't right after you'd been breathalysed, failed the test and then charged?

To allow you to drive home over the limit is a bit, erm wrong??? How long was you detained for? No cop shop is going to allow anyone to drive themselves home a few hours after failing a breath test..

Heck, after I’ve had a night on the lash, I normally don’t drive the next day, its just something I don’t do.

They took me back to my car, did a mobile breath test after acquiring one and it came up "WARN" then gave me my keys and said to drive home.

I trust they took your mugshot, DNA swabs, fingerprints and retinal scan also, to be entered onto the database for life?

Most I've ever had before driving was a pint, I used to do it quite often admittedly but that was years ago when I was healthy, and could have a few bevvies without them having a conga in my colon.

I have been lifted for speeding though, in 1988. Only time I've ever been convicted of a driving offence.

I used to have one bottle/pint when I was up the pub but have stopped that really, just cant see the point of running the risk.....god it can come up with anything! I have no sympathy in this situation im afraid im just glad there were no results of your irresponsibilty.

Never did a retinal scan.

Did a mug shot by making me look up at a light, fingerprints on a big computer and swabs in either side of my mouth.

Andy

They take retinal scans now ?

As for the mugshot, DNA and fingerprints, it is the norm when someone is brought in. A bad thing ?

Yes. Is it really necessary to include so much personal data on a database for life, for such a petty offence? Perfectly acceptable for more serious offences such as robbery, manslaughter etc, but a motoring offence?

A few of the blokes I drink with have had retinal scans done for assault. I think I'm one of the very few in my pub who hasn't had it done.

You need a record of someone who is brought in. There is nothing wrong or sinister in taking someone's fingerprints and mugshot. It is for police records and not plastered over the local rag.

As for DNA, it is an invaluable tool in investigation. It goes onto a national database where it is used for speculative searches from crime scenes, not to fit someone up as some suggest.

In terms of DNA, I personally have doubts as to the neccesity of taking samples from all arrested persons as you can criminalise kids for a playground scrap but I have no such doubts when the person is charged with an offence, no matter how trivial.

I suppose this depends on people's points of view. I personally am uncomfortable knowing that even 50 years from now they will still have my DNA for a minor offence I committed, but still that's only my opinion.

Why?

Unless you plan to do something remarkably illegal then surely knowing that your DNA is on file and so can even assist you, by ruling you out of an investigation, is a good thing? No?

To get back on topic, one of the lads in my office was arrested and charged with drink driving (12 month ban, he gets his licence back in October).

He was stopped the morning after he had been out drinking and honestly didn't know how long alcohol stays in your system because it was not something which was highlighted when he sat his written and practical driving test.

Petty offense lol

Every year, thousands are affected by drinking and driving. I strongly disagree with keeping so much personal data too, but calling drinking and driving a 'petty offense' is just downright ridiculous. A petty offense would be something like stealing a mars bar or something.

I hope his mate feels guilty

Some mate if he doesn't.

Why should he? Not his responsibility and not his fault his mate screwed up.

Not meaning to be harsh, but no sympathy here I'm afraid. If you're gonna drink at all, leave the car keys at home.
