I just realised that the bigger 400g and 800g tins are much better value, especially the mixed pack. The trouble is that Florence is a really small cat and only eats about 200g/day, maybe a little more sometimes and I like to alternate the flavours daily so that she doesn't get bored of one flavour. Maybe she can go 2 days on one flavour, I'll have to try her out.

Edit; with delivery from Zooplus I only use the Yodel option now as it tends to arrive a couple of days quicker than with parcelforce.

Our kittens are on whiskas kitten food at the moment, interesting to read about the meat content and I'm happy to swap to a better food but i can't see kitten food from Animonda on there?

That's why I buy Animonda for Florence. 27p per 100g and 99% meat.

Can you give me a link to this?
At present, I am giving my 2 cats a combination of raw rabbit (approx £5.5/kg, inc delivery) and whiskas.

27p for 99% meat, is pretty damn good, if this is true.

EDIT: I just saw your link.
I might try that.

I don't think there's any health hazards to putting food in the fridge but moost cats don't like cold food. Warmer food smells more so is more palatable to them. When we bought tins we put them in the fridge but took 2 portions out for a while before feeding time so that they warmed up to room temperature.

Yes that sounds about right. Good idea to take some out of the bigger cans and keep the rest in the fridge in the mean time.

Well I found this kitten food on that site, not sure if that's the only one though:

Looks like they have stopped selling the kitten version of Carny, although when I google'd it this came up;

Like I said earlier, when we bought the adult one it looked very much the same to me except with more fat in it. Looking at the contents there they look very similar though. Maybe the kitten one was just in smaller chunks. Mrs W hates this food though because it often has bits of intestine in it! :D

The adult mix pack is 21p/100g, I realised today. I got 27p/100g from that table on the pet forum but I've been paying 35p/100g for the smaller tins.

With Applaws (wet food), you don't need to heat it up.
Its of such high quality and taste that almost any cat would lap it up cold, frozen, spilt on the floor, mixed with grit or soaked in drain water. :p

I spend a lot on food, but even I cannot justify paying about £10/kg for Applaws. Raw food (pure lean meat) comes in at around £6.50/KG, which is what I am currently spending my money on. If I buy high quality steak, I'd be paying somewhere around £10/kg. I cannot justify paying for Applaws wet food - way over priced.

What would be the general consensus about getting a kitten/cat when you live in a first-floor apartment with a private back garden, but you're situated perilously close to a busy road?

I'm not massively taken with the idea of having a house cat, as I think it's a little unnatural to deny them their freedom, but at the same time I wouldn't want to endanger a cats life for the sake of it.

If kitty were to wander down the stairs, out the catflap and take a left turn, it would have a nice garden to play around in along with my neighbour's garden to use as a giant litter tray and various other spaces to explore and do what cats do.

If it was to take a right turn, there's a two-lane one-way road out the front which could well see poor kitty getting squished. Very busy around peak times, less so at non-peak times and generally deserted in the evenings.

Any thoughts on the situation? I've had cats before and I'd like one again, but I don't want to be selfish and put one in danger unnecessarily.

My cat is now indoor after starting life as an outdoor cat. Special circumstances though. She's a rescue cat from the RSPCA that has cat flu so she can't be allowed to socialise with healthy cats otherwise she can pass it on. Doesn't bother her though. In fact she doesn't even like looking out the window since pretty much any sound from outside spooks her. I'm guessing it's to do with her having a bad experience while she was a stray.

tried the kittens on some wet food for the first time tonight. They were more than happy to lick the gravey stuff to start with, then they ended up eatinga few pieces each from my hands. Then tried to point them in the direction of the saucer we had the food on to see if they would eat any on their own & they just ran off & started playing with shoe laces again (their current obsession).

So for a first attempt I think it went quite well. Little willow is off to vets in the morning for her eye infection. I'm tempted to put them all in the cat carrier & take them all, as they haven't been seperated at all yet & don't want to stress any of them out more than I need to if I can avoid it.

So here it is, THE TOWER.

The pile of bits to get it built, obviously I needed some help:

And the finished article, let me know if you can see the cat in the clouds...

House cats are fine as long as they're raised from kittens in that environment. It's when you take a formally outdoor cat and lock them in it's a bit cruel.
I totally agree.

Just to clarify my earlier post, I wouldn't entertain the idea of taking an outdoors cat and keeping it locked away, but neither do I want to keep one indoors just for the sake of having one.

I'd rather be able to let the animal do whatever it wanted to do, but be safe doing it - hence my concern about the road in close proximity.

Our two are house cats and they are fine, both been so since kittens and we had house cats before (they came from the RSPCA and had never been outside. The kittens really just followed the older cats. I think as long as they have lots to do they are fine. Ours seem happy, healthy cats.

That's huge. I bet they love that. I like the superior and slightly freaked looking kitten at the top!

Anyone have any experience of pet insurance?

I'm thinking of getting my 4 month old house cat insured, but all the online quotes require an email address and my house address, so will likely start pestering me. I'm just after some rough costs and what it covers etc.

2 of my cats spend most of their time indoors anyway as well as using the litter tray. They have 24/7 access to outside, where there are quiet roads, lots of big gardens and fields very close as well.

Me and the Mrs are going to pick up our new kitten tonight, went to visit last night and she is absolutely gorgeous and I'm very excited.

I've never had a cat before so it's going to be a learning curve. I've been letting my girlfriend deal with arranging the stuff to get for it. Dunno what she's got so far, but anything I need to look out for or is absolutely essential to get from the start?
