Sky Broadband Unlimited (20Mbps) but getting max 1.7mbps

Deffinatly call sky, and try ur best to get put through to teir 2 tech support. They are the guys you want to talk too.

Here is my stats this morning:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5120 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 46.0 db 27.5 db
Noise Margin 11.1 db 14.0 db

As you can see your Line Attenuation both up and down are lower then mine (lower the better, means ur closer to the exchange).

So being plugged into the socket u currently are in, there is a lot more speed to come from that line, sky has an automatic thing call DLM (Digital Line Management), that when you first use them, automaticly configures your line for fastest and most stable speed.

Iv been told by sky and Bt that my line can only handle 3.5meg (thats from both tech support, sky's site says 4meg, BT's says 3.5meg, but as you can see i finally got sky to set it higher, took a few calls though, persistance is the key.

I would suggest you ask your parents to give sky a call, and mention that you are not happy with the speeds you are getting, and to ask them to retest, especially with the router plugged into that socket you are getting those high noise margins from. Good luck and i hope u can get it sorted, just keep pestering sky, there tech department is good, just be paitent with them, and you will get what u want eventually, u may not get 20meg, to far from exchange, but easily over 5meg thats for sure lol.

Yeh i know, but im lazy and can't be bothered dealing with the first tier tech lot anymore, im happy with my 5meg, only time i'll call them again is if i decide to get my delay reduced, now that they are finally offering that to gamers, not that they advertise it though lol.

If your lazy and cant be bothered then nothing will get sorted, just ring and insist on being transferred to 2nd/3rd tier.

well i posted to show the other person a comparison and to advise him whats best to do, im happy with my connection, its stable, and i realisticly know i won't get much more.

And like i said only thing i would change is my delay, but even that is'nt to bad in most games i play, so why bother ringing when its not broken. When the time comes i feel i need to get them to lower my delay, then i'll probably ask them to re-sync my line too.

No probs mate, but yeh OP deffinatly should easisly get over 6mb if not more with his noise margin as it is haha.

Lets hope he or his parents get onto sky.

Right, im gonna pester my dad to make sky improve my speed.

Okay, so what should I ask them exactly?

1. Not happy with my speeds
2. Ask to retest.

and is that it? I hope for the best?

Get your dad to ring up, pass the data protection routine and pass the phone over to you. Tell them that your sync speed is low and can you have your target SNR margin set to 7dB please.

Log into the router and monitor the sync speed, if the other person changes it you'll see the resync and be connected at a higher speed.

Okay thanks,

Now I gotta wait for my dad to get back from B&Q...

How do I say dB? Does it stand for anything or..?

Well all they will ask is the address, postcode, and the password that ur parents set up, i often call sky myself, even though im not the account holder, but i know the password lol.

But good luck when u finally get to speak to someone.

Just call them yourself...

Tel 0800 0287855 for the freeness ;)

I've just spoken to Sky about my line... which is in my dads name... they asked me for:

Tel Number
Name (I advised its in the name of my dad but I'm his son and my name is and they didn't say anything)
Address
Password

So long as you know all of the above it will be fine,

It turned out my issue was sky had left DLM running on my line... lol causing me to be stuck at 4mb for the last month...

Now syncing:

Nope its the one ur parents set up the first time they called sky.

Well, my dad gave me all the sky pieces of paper hes collected over the years. The oldest one is from 2003 :O

But the only password I see on the sheets is the sky.com password, which I changed a few weeks ago
