*** Sky TV Cancellation & Negotiation Thread ***

I canceled sky last month and i have never been happier. Running XBMC Frodo build as TV frontend and DVBViewer as the backend and running 2 dual tuner cards, one freesat and one freeview so I get all the channels.

Can tune to 4 common TV stations simultaneously. With the DVB Scheduler web page i can schedule any program I want anywhere in the world, don't need no Apple app.

Used the old sky dish and a freeview antenna i had put up one year ago. Now the whole house can have TV streamed from one PC via Ethernet/Wireless to anything i can throw XBMC onto, now thats multiroom :)

There is plenty of free IP stuff as well like Iplayer, 4oD, Channel5 and ITV Player just to name a few. Good old XBMC :)

Basically sky are playing catchup now with all their only as of late Ethernet enabled sky box, and all the stuff they have on demand never gets updated and is a very basic selection.

The GOOD tv is all on BBC for which we pay for anyway via TV Licenses and sky only really baited people with the sports channels; as for movies they are old, over repeated and wouldn't bate anyone; their special channels well that will get offed via IP one day by new start ups they have got nothing really.

One day it will all be IP is really going to take hold once fibre rolls all out and then sky will have some serious competition, no need for satellites. Just a matter of time...

I agree on the technical aspects, Sky are really playing catchup.
But to claim BBC is where all the good stuff is? blasphemy! We both know its Channel 4! :D
Oh .. and I love football too much, so im stuck with sky :(

Recently canceled Sky TV as we never really watched the Sky specific channels plus the sky box died on us. Now just use a freesatHD box.

Only channel i miss is MotorsTV which isn't available on Freesat :(

Everyone I know is cancelling Sky TV.... It's a load of rubbish.

Am i on my own here ?

I absolutely love that I get Sky Sports F1 for free with HD package. I have a load of shows which are exclusive to Sky Atlantic or Sky One which i love. I watch...

Blue Bloods
The Following
Strike Back
Game of Thrones
Vegas
Board Walk Empire
Hawai Five O

The only alternative would be to .... download them illegally which is what i suspect most people are doing who are cancelling. But rarely are the illegal copies as good as the ones on Sky.

plus the stuff thats not on Sky Atlantic that we see ahead of time like Walking Dead on Fox. There is loads of great stuff on there that isn't repeats. Just depends if its what you like or not. Either that or you're pretending you don't download it all illegally.

I recognise 2 of the shows you mention on there and i dont even watch them. Some people just do not watch as much TV as others, so thats why I canceled, that and I think Sky make about 1000% profit and i do not beleive in monopolies.

Someone's downloading from the wrong places.
Full HD eps are easily available
Then you have Using american Netflix.
Or buying Blu Ray.

No they just have an absolutely abysmal broadband services. You couldnt get that many disconnects, slowdowns and stalling with traffic shaping, only pure incompetence and mis-management of your network could help you achieve that level of **** poor service. yes it is unlimitted..unlimitted pain and perjury trying to get a stable and reliable broadband service. 7 years with Be* I had one service dropout. Since being with sky I get at least a monthly 2 day loss of service- 3 modems, 10 microfilters, 6 cables and still they wont accept that it is an exchange problem and not my network at home.

My BB with sky has been rock solid since joining almost 2 years ago.
No Faults, no slowdowns, no disconnects, no "stalling".
I get a steady 17meg which I can use 100% all day every day if I like.

With cable I'd be hitting STM every day.
Had a handfull of issues with their horrendous router tho lol, got it relpaced, now fine.

Much like DW I always get full speed, all the time. I love the ones that complain about speed and stability but upon investigation are missing filters and have a 30 foot extension, splitter then the Router and wonder why they get disconnects and slow speed.

I have had a quick skim read thru the thread, has anyone moved from Sky to Youview? how does it compare, as I am considering making the change?

Also if you just buy the box and connect to aerial/network who do you pay if you want subscription channels? if you don't have a package with the likes of BT/talktalk for TV?

Whats this phone number I see that appears on every channel from time to time top right... yet on my other box it's not on the screen.

I can't find any information on it. 839 080 039

Which are usually compressed to fit into a reasonable size. Look at the list of illegally available copies now and they are usually 500mb an episode.

Of course blu ray looks the best, but who wants to wait for the box set to come out ? And at the end of the day, if your buying them on blu ray, Sky are doing things right by showing them. What more do you want out of your TV subscription other than stuff you want to watch ?

Most of them aren't. But the fact that "oh but they're 2.5gb" is the first response proves my point. People are cancelling sky and just downloading them illegally instead which is morally wrong.
