Sony Bravia KDL 50 W829

O yer, did have one problem. The HD audio out on the sony is optical and my AV receiver only has an analog optical in :(

Need to convert this for 5.1 from the TV or replace the receiver.

I thought all optical connections were digital?

You may already know but the TV won't output DTS over optical, only DD. It also won't do DTS over HDMI which surprised me, but it just means everything has to go through the receiver, which isn't the end of the world.

Probably using the word analog wrong, it reads as an AV channel on the receiver (I can pick any of the AV channels for TV in) and outputs 2.1 only.

receiver calls it PCM, which a quick google gives

"Pulse-code modulation (PCM) is a method used to digitally represent sampled analog signals. It is the standard form of digital audio in computers, Compact Discs, digital telephony and other digital audio applications."

Saying that, if as you say I can't get the TV to output the unprocessed audio or DTS etc then maybe there is nothing I can do and don't need a new receiver.

There is a setting to change from PCM to DD, which the tv can output. I can't remember exactly where but will have a look when I get a min. Its in the Home menu if you want to check for it yourself.

I also seem to remember you will also need to press Options > Speakers and change that to audio system for it to output DD.

I would be very surprised if your receiver can't process DD. Can I just check that the source you are using is a DD 5.1 source? Because if it is 2.1 that is all that will be output by the tele.

Update, this is how you set it to output DD if the source is DD. Home menu > settings >sound > Digital audio out *set this to auto rather than PCM*

Hope that helps.

Well I've gone for the 50" W805C, no interest in the 3D aspect whatsoever but it was £515 on Amazon so it seemed quite the no-brainer really! Glad I kept an eye out for it as I'm in Canada on holiday at the moment, was already annoyed with myself for missing it the first time when it was in the Prime Day event.

Jesus that's cheap! I'm looking for a replacement to our aging Samsung that's done an I year tour, and these keep coming up as a best replacement spec (bar the Samsung UEH6200 which has now been discontinued apparently ) but not seen any at that price!

It was an Amazon Lightning deal the other day, went pretty quick. Set it up earlier this afternoon, been moving into my new flat today so not had a proper chance to tweak it but I'm very impressed with it so far.

Picked one of these up yesterday at the Sony store for £649 and a 5 year warranty. The 55" version, I'm not allowed to open it until I move into the new home though, wahh!

I'm having problems with the netflix app.

I'll select a film, it will buffer to 100% but then crash. If I try enough times it sometimes works but it's very frustrating.

I'm using unblock-us, I don't know if that makes a difference.

The above setup worked perfectly for a month and now all of a sudden it's having problems.

It seems like this is quite a widespread problem but I couldn't find any fixes.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Was that online?

Trying to find this TV again for ~£650, should have picked it up when John Lewis had it at this price :(

Sorry to bump. Has anyone experienced this?

Anyone got any thoughts on the KD55X8509C (4K jobbie) ?, as its had £800 lopped off now.

Only got a 40" Samsung at the minute, 6700 model, with built in Freesat HD (had it a few years now, fancy bigger), so if i got the above Tv, id also have to get a Freesat HD box to go with it, so was considering the Humax HDR-1100S Freesat Freetime HD Recorder as well.

Just a shame they all have internet, Netflix this that and the other now, as none of that interests me, i just want to watch the telly. :D

Might actually just go for the 55W809, as not really interested in the 4K tbh, and its a long way off yet.

EDIT: Ordered one for collection tomorrow, and a Freesat HD box to go with it (as the Tvs only Freeview HD), as ive been using the built in Freesat HD on the Tv i got now to watch. :D
