Sony Bravia KDL 50 W829

This TV keeps getting better and better,

Best £650 I ever spent (plus the £70 for my stand).

Just need to sort the visible wires behind the stand (was too excited and just got it working).

The software update has added PlayStation Now and general performance of the tv.

Menus are still very slow when turning the TV on, so I don't know what General performance covers as it is still not very good.

Also maybe most of you watch movies but even though I have been following the advise on AVF for general setup I find the motion blur and trailing unbearable on terrestrial TV and Youtube.

All the Sony TV's are like that. They sit in very low power mode, and then have to load everything up just like a tablet with a massive screen. It's not that long, it just feels like a long time when you're waiting for it. If that's the cost for the 0.25 watt standby, I'm not going to begrudge it a few seconds at boot time.

It used to be a lot slower mate they have improved it but it will never be instant :)

At least we are still getting updates on this model:D

Slower than what it is now? Well since you put it like that I should be grateful :p

Apart from the sluggish menus, constant forgetting my internet settings forcing me to go through the whole network setup procedure every time I turn the telly on and trailing on terrestrial TV I've found the Sony to be alright, not as brilliant as people make it out to be though. Picture quality wise it's not bad.

How bad is the trailing? This will be standard definition, right? No motion settings turned on?

Yes slower that what it is now :)

Trailing on terrestrial ? mine has never forgot my internet settings..sound like your tv could be faulty.

Just turned mine on this morning and it was instant.

Almost like I had just turned off and on again.

Turning it off for awhile and will test again as it may have been a fluke.

My W905 can sometimes be faster, because it's turned itself on for something. When you turn it off, a couple of minutes later, you can hear it quietly go "click" like some kind of relay has just activated. Then it does a full startup, but before that point, it will come up very quickly, so I think when you turn it off, there's a few minutes before it goes into deep power saving mode.

I've also heard it click at random times, so I think it may partially wake up for network/update reasons without actually firing up the screen, so I think you may get a faster start-up then (because it's already booted it's processors).

So the glitching is probably down to signal. The signal quality is jumping between 40%-80% while the signal strength is staying at 75%.

I had a look outside and it's some weird non standard powered aerial which has been placed under some roof decking. Fantastic design decision there. Haha.

The aerial probably isn't aligned properly and should have a 12v power supply powering the masthead amplifier. I looked at my signal strength and both bars show 100

I hope not. I did a reset last night so will get back to it later in the evening or weekend and see what the problem is. I've reserved the TV on the DHCP list this time around though.

Yes leave it off for longer. 5-10 mins should be fine.

I think it is quicker and not just a placebo effect.

Also just noticed the picutre in picture option and something called "love", really should read the instructions.

Well I've gone for the 50" W805C, no interest in the 3D aspect whatsoever but it was £515 on Amazon so it seemed quite the no-brainer really! Glad I kept an eye out for it as I'm in Canada on holiday at the moment, was already annoyed with myself for missing it the first time when it was in the Prime Day event.

Any reason to get the KDL50W809CBU or KDL50W807CSU over this? The W829 doesn't seem to have high availability - is it being phased out?

Edit: and does it work with Samsung glasses?

and what does BBU or just B refer to?

Edit: Answers for anyone else. The newer 809 - 805 do work with Samsung glasses (5100 model and above at least) and BBU and B are just lazy retailers not writing the full name.

cheers, can get the 829 for £600 or the 807/809 for £670-700. As you say these are the new models.

Still not sure what the difference is.

The main difference appears to be the Android TV and other new features. The screen is much the same as far as I can see.

Think I will pick up the KDL50W809 in the morning.

Went with the KDL50W809

picture and 3D look great - can't complain about anything apart from PC world..

As far as I could see they had SD video on the HD TVs next to the 4K ones to make the difference stand out. Had to look twice at first as some of the HD TVs looked bad, but close inspection showed poor source quality.

Secondly, when asking the difference between the Sony and a similar priced 4K TV, I got a generic answer that it will future proof me when what I wanted to know is what I was sacrificing for 4k.

Finally, they suggested that I could not use the cheaper Samsung £10 active glasses with the Sony TV I got. I got them anyway and they work fine.

In short, TV is good, PC world poor.
