Sony XF90

Has anyone had any issues with clouding/blooming during HDR content which affects the black bars?

I'm a bit concerned about this issue, as a few people I have spoken to have returned theirs because of it. It's the one thing that is putting me off this particular TV.

I must admit, I also did see some clouding issues on the TV in store at Currys. Although this probably did have default settings on, but compared to some of the other TVs also on default, it was more pronounced on the Sony.

I didn't see any of the same issues with the Q6FN and Q7FN QLED Samsung's, which according to RTINGs have inferior local dimming.

I can only guess that the Sony had local dimming disabled by default for this to look worse, and the Samsung's had theirs on by default. Can anyone confirm if this is true?

the Q6 and Q7 aren't FALD and the Sony is. So I don't see how they would be better with blooming.

My screen is amazing but I haven't gone looking for issues tbh. I also have a top of the range panasonic plasma, top of the range 4k LG and it replaced a top of the range 1080P sony.

i think you do need to buy then return with 7 days if unhappy.

Yeah I think this is what I'll have to consider.

On paper the XF90 is perfect for the things I want to watch.

Just bought the XF9005 49" version for £739 from RS. Should be a worthy replacement for our 2012 GT50 Plasma. Be nice to have some apps working..!
It will get delivered tomorrow.
I will be using the optical out for my Logitech speakers for DTS and DD.
Is it best to still avoid the Oreo update since they pulled it...? I know that you can manually install it, but if it is an issue is it easy to go back....?

I wouldn't call an IPS LG 4K TV top of the range as the top of the range panels provided by LG are OLED. In fact I believe the top of the range panels sold by sony are also OLED's produced by LG.

it was the most expensive and highest model available in 43".

so until they make OLED's in 43" it is top of the range for it's size.

I've been using it since release day and not had any problems. As your using optical out for audio you should be fine to install it.

You can read mixed accounts on this update.
As you know some have had sound issues in certain circumstances. At least two other people have noted disconnection messages /issues with Wi-Fi one even still being messages when swapped over the ethernet. That is claimed to be a Oreo update issue

I wouldn't feel too bad about trying it out but it is a one way trip apparently If you could easily downgrade the firmware back to the previous release I think that I would feel more confident in trying it out.

Have you noticed much difference since the Oreo update.?

Just noting that it doesn't seem possible to have Freesat and Youview at the same time I am reading that YV had to be disabled before Freesat can work Seems strange

Only had the TV for two days, I'd like it to last at least a week before potentially messing out up, lol.

Mine's connected via ethernet straight into a UniFi switch and I've had no problems with disconnects since the day of the install.

The main advantage of Oreo is the far superior home screen and dolby vision working properly on Netflix. The Amazon app also seems to run better too.

Good to know thanks.
The DV for Netflix and the Home Screen changes sound good.

Seems that the two posts (AV Forums)

are noting the issues due to the Oreo update, but that doesn't make them correct.

How do you output your sound, assuming that you do....?

Does it retain your settings or do you need a factory reset...?

Mine is the 49" version of the XF9005.

Thanks

I've picked up an XF90 going cheap, seems great value and the next best thing to OLED at twice the price.

Sod's law says the XF95 with airplay and other shiny new stuff will come out next week now!!

AFAIK the next version will be the XG (the G for the 2019 models).

The updated version for the 49" one will be the XG9005, and use the same processor - as I understand it. It will not be £739 tho.....!

I'm using a Sonos Beam connected via Optical. There's no need for a factory reset, everything worked fine on mine afterwards. I noticed that ClearAudio+ re-enabled on some of the inputs after the Oreo update but that was easy to switch off again.

Having the TV wall "false walled" while were on hols end of the month. Decided to roll the dice on a 75" XF9005. Delivery date is week after we're back. Let the builder dude know we're gonna need a bigger hole :)

Thanks for that. Good to know that you also use Optical.

I did have an issue with Kodi and how they have implemented DTS passthrough, it will not work. Apparently that is down to how Sony has configured their API's in a non std way. Plex seems fine if you transcode to DD 5.1.

Just picked up a Sony KD55XF9005BU 55" 4K HDR Smart LED TV. I have the TV connected on HDMI 3 (ARC) which is ran by a Denon AVR-X2300W.

I have started the set up process a couple of issues:

  • Sky is full screen, but when something is ran from my WDTV box, i lose a chunk of the screen:

  • Blacks seem very black - think i need to google optimal settings for the TV.
Anyone have this TV or can offer advice?

You're not "losing a chunk of the screen", you're gaining the full frame of the movie as it was shot. You can probably make it fill the screen, but only by chopping off the sides of the frame and losing part of the movie (zoom), or distorting it to fill the screen (stretch).

Anyone even slightly interested in movies would watch it as you have pictured it above ie, the full frame at the correct aspect ratio.
