Speedlink Medusa 5.1 Headset Owners' Thread

Does anyone elses Amp feel Very loose inside, I'm on my second atm and it feels worse than the first ( had to send back because Amp wasn't working and now , Same again ) .

Does Everything have to be Correctly connected for the power light to go on ? I can't get my second pair to work yet again . They must think I'm taking the mickey if I ask for this to be returned As delivery all in now must have cost more than the headphones now :/ )

I read somewhere that the bass and centre channels are reversed.

Has anyone tried reversing the channels?

I have a pair at home and have just received a 2nd pair (think I might have broken my 1st amp in a fit of rage when it wouldn't stop ticking and humming with some unknown intereference! :o)

I think I tried reversing the channels before, but couldn't tell if it made any difference or not.

EDIT - Ooh, just opened the 2nd pair up and they are this new revision two - the ones without the DVD/CD option but with the VIB option. They fit better than the 1st revision too - they are smaller. Now I have two 'phones and two amps, so maybe I can mess about with the first amp and see if I can mod it to make it intereference-proof or something! :D

Bass/centre definitely aren't reversed on mine. Bassy stuff is clearly coming out of the woofers, it's really obvious cause it makes the headphones shake. Centre channel is also definitely coming out of the furthest forward of the speakers, as it should. I'm using an Audigy 2 ZS btw.

This is what Toms Hardware said btw -

It would seem that the center and sub-channels are reversed, meaning that anyone without a soundcard that has these channels reversed (the majority of cards do not) must use the extender cables to reverse the center and sub channels in order for the setup to work properly.

But I think they must have had an early demo set or something, or maybe SpeedLink have changed the design.

The headphones don't even get their bass from the bass channel, they take it from the other channels, which is the same way 5.1 speakers work.

OK, then did anyone else find they need to whack the bass on the PC right up?

(Audigy 2 Value here).

These rev 2 phones are nice I have to say.

EDIT - Actually, I WOULD recommend changing the centre and sub over.

I've just swapped them and there's definately more vibrational goodness. In addition, the VIB on the in-line control actually controls the vibration when the channels are swapped.

Try it anyway and see which you prefer.

:D

Just opened up my old amp and you wanna know why it's so heavy?

There's a hunking great blob of metal in there! They've just bolted it in to make it feel heavy and therefore 'high quality'!

Nice!

It's insulated from everything so serves no purpose!

Pics to follow :D

you sure its not one of those big capacitors or a power Supply ?

oh ok, now i've seen pics it looks like a weight ?

It's probably to anchor the amp down with all those wires connected to it. I'd hate mine to be always sliding off my desk :p

Btw I didn't have to whack the bass up in windows at all. Plenty of bass already on default soundcard settings.

Hmm... are these really so much better than the Zalmans? Judging from the amount of people in this thread who said theirs arrived faulty or fell apart after only a year ( ), the build quality on these must be abysmal!
Personally I'd much rather have something that works reliably than something that will work brilliantly but is likely to stop working completely without any warning. After all, I only want a 5.1 headset for games, I have a pair of Sennies for music. The question is, are the Zalmans really THAT bad?

I thought the Zalmans were hideous when I had some, even in games. While the Medusa's sound much better, they still don't produce a high quality sound, but they are good enough for late night gaming and maybe the odd movie IMO.

Do not buy either for listenning to music though.

Most folks would post here to complain than the ones who read with perfectly ok ones. Only if they felt they were being given too negative a light would ppl post (myself being a prime example :)) I had the USB version for a while for use with PC and laptop gaming (bloody awesome far as laptop surround etc goes) and am now gonna get a set of the normal ones as these tend to sound better if you have anything above onboard sound driving them :)
