Subnautica

I know its been poo-poo'ed but in terms of future plans, I would still love a co-op aspect to the game. Something akin to Ark. Can but dream, maybe somewhere far down the line in Subnautica 2.

Still having an absolute blast with no signs of stopping.
Spent most of Saturday in the Lost River working on my thermal base and grabbing ALL the resource nodes using the Prawn. Ended up with an absolute ton of a rare green resource. I then ventured DEEPER in my Prawn as my Cyclops only had a max depth of 900m... and my target was Kyanite deposits. I eventually came away with about 7 ingots worth of the stuff and as a result my Cyclops and Prawn are can recharge their power thermally. Both vehicles have max depth upgrades too.

I'm going to back off the storyline now as I haven't long to go and explore, develop my bases and gather more resources using the above two vehicles. One thing that I did get reminded of was that I wish the Cyclops HUD elements were resizable - they take up a fair amount of the viewscreen I find. Might have to suggest that using the ingame feedback.

How many Time Capsules have you folks discovered? I've found 4 so far but haven't had much loot in them :/

I am pretty much in EXACTLY the same position as you! Been exploring the Lost river and just nabbed some Kyonite. Also got the thermal modules and max depth for Cyclops and PRAWN so next is to fully explore the lava area and
build the space ship to escape

I too have been holding off on the last 2 story parts to prolong the game.

Have found a few time capsules, one was full of ion charger thingys which was awesome.

omgs, that's my dream capsule! Imagine a Cyclops running on those with shields and sonar running! :o :D

Yep, that's what I thought! Now I just need to find the damn Cyclops Engine Fragments ffs! I've looked everywhere and can't find any. I probably need to explore the Dunes a bit more, but that's Reaper territory and I don't know if I want to do that!

I found all the engine parts near the giant mushroom area, got to say I was not ready for just how large the Cyclops is, its almost bigger than my base lol.

Yeah I've spent ages going around there. I have probably just been unlucky. I got every other Cyclops fragment from that area, but none for the engine so far :(

I've found so many engine parts it amazing. Found the last of my Hull parts around the Mushroom Forest biome and have found countless engine bits. Try around the Lost River entrance north of the Aurora front...I may have seen one there but that is reaper territory so be careful.

+1

Played this before but the game just lacks a lot imo.

It is fun and got some nice survival stuff but not enough to keep me coming back in the end. Would love coop too.

Got to say though, the game is stunning looking especially on OLED, the way the colours pop and when you get to the very deep ocean with pure blacks makes for a very tense experience!

Parked the Cyclops outside a the Castle in the lava zone. Swam in like a madman through its tunnels to the Thermal Plant only to realise I hadn't the tablets to access the terminals! Swam back out, jumped on the cyclops and GTFO before the dragon came around. Amazingly made back to the Lost River in one piece. The Thermal upgrades on the sub are a must imo - the leeches would have eaten the subs power for brekkie otherwise. Now I've got a sub absolutely brimming with resources heading to my base that can't cope! :o

Oooohhhhh. That's why I run out of power suddenly, I had Leeches all over my ship! Didn't know they did that!

Is this like another No Mans Sky?

Not really no, its underwater, its only on one planet, the base building is more in depth, the story is better defined, with a more consistent start , middle and end. Its a survival game so it has that in common with other games in the genre but no, I wouldnt say its another No Mans Sky.

Thanks for the reply. Looks pretty decent and I don't think we've had anything set under water like this before?

Yep same! Really atmospheric, and spooky, in dark room with headphones on. Thinking also of getting steam link to put through onto oled in front room as imagine black and colours should be awesome! - does it play ok on controller?

Just trying to work out where to build a proper base now, only a few hours in and about to visit first land mass following “quests”

It's definitely not like another No Man's Sky. For a kickoff, it's been a complete working game pretty much for the last two years in early access, and even longer depending on what you wanted to do in it. The developers have done an amazing job and it's been a very playable game throughout early access. In fact, the developers of Subnautica would put the No Man's Sky developers to shame. It's not in space, it's all underwater although the world has a space theme to it. The base building is very well executed. I don't remember playing a game like this that does base building as well as Subnautica. And you have a reason to build bases because the further down into the depths you go, the more imperative it is to build little outposts with stocks of cured food and water to keep you going when so far down.

The submersibles make this game what it is though. The Seamoth, which you get early on really helps with exploration and finding things at the start, and the PRAWN suit is just awesome. It has a very deep depth capability from the start (900m crush depth I think) going right the way up to 1700m with upgrades, and you can use the arms to gather resources which go into a storage compartment on the suit, so you can explore and gather resources whilst in the suit. And finally, the Cyclops is your very own mobile base!

Yeah, the game is great, and definitely not another No Man's Sky. Subnautica is a completely fleshed out survival game that is at the top of the genre, and is the only game that I know of that does underwater so well.

It plays really well on the controller, although things like gathering fish is quite difficult because they can be quite twitchy when they're swimming. Aside from that, piloting the submersibles, gathering materials and building all work perfectly with the controller :) You can also switch seamlessly between controller and mouse just by moving the mouse in the game, or pressing a button on the controller. I often use the mouse for when I need to catch fish for food, and then use the controller for exploration and gathering.
