Subnautica

Possible spoilers. Am I near the end of the game?
Just got the rocket blueprint and built the platform, booster and gantry. I just need to find some sulphur and something else and its complete.

I feel like I have only scratched the surface of the game, yet It seems like this might be the end of the game. I honestly expected an open world survival game to have more to it than this, but maybe i am not actually as near to the end as i think, hopefully. I have probably put 20-30 hours into it so far, but the way i play games that isn't much at all. To put it into perspective I have 200+ hours in the Witcher 3, 300+ hours in Skyrim and nearly 500 in 7 days to die. I like to take my time and explore ever nook and cranny, spend time building a base etc. But once theres an end in sight it kinda makes everything i have doe feel a little pointless. I'd have expected this to have come much later into the game.

Surely then the answer would be to not build the rocket and instead take your time and explore every nook and cranny and spend time building a base if thats what you like? Because the blueprints are dotted about theres always going to be the chance that someone could get the blueprints early and then just build that and complete it. Its possible for example to complete Skryim in a couple of hours if you do things in the shortest route possible.

I have been playing this for a week now and have pretty much enjoyed it so far. Today I got everything from Floating Island and then took a detour in my Seamoth down the left side of the crashed ship. Unfortunately while I was outside scanning and gathering stuff I heard a evil roar that was getting closer and closer. I hopped on my Seaglide and started evasive action (:D:D:D) and got eaten by something big (a reaper I guess?) and respawned back in my base. All that stuff I gathered lost!! Anyway, left my base on my Seaglide to get my Seamoth back and discovered my first bug in the game. The Seamoth was inside the seabed and although the lights were shining through I can't get to it so will have to build another.

Something weird happened while I was exploring Floating Island:-

I was up high, can't remember where exactly but it was up on the hills surrounding the central lake. I wondered down a pass that led to a drop overlooking the island and I went through a narrow pass something like a ghost appeared and said "what are you?" before disappearing again. What was it and will I find out who/what it is later in the game?

To answer your spoiler question, yes you will :)

The blueprint for the rocket is behind a locked door that you get the code for in a radio message. I'm guessing I just did all the exploring earlier than expected so i am able to pretty much build the whole rocket straight away. I was just hoping there was more to the story element of the game than what there has been so far. If the game has fed me an end game escape rocket i'm guessing theres very little, if any story left.. It feels a little pointless to expand my base and survive when theres an escape rocket at my disposal.

I think finding a time capsule with an mk3 depth module for my sea moth has probably made me go through the game faster than I should have been able to. Is it just randomly generated what you find in time capsules? It was quite close to the spawn point, so it feels like i shouldn't have been able to find such an op mod so early on. I had no idea as I went into the game blind and didn't look at any guides, so I just assumed an mk3 mod was normal and there must be much deeper water later on.

I think its just the nature of these sorts of open world games, for example you got 300+ hours out of Skyrim, I completed it in 29 hours according to Steam. You have effectively neared the end of Subnautica in 30ish hours, whereas I played it for 102 hours (according to Steam) before completion. I was building my base and exploring a lot and so when I got radio messages I didnt go straight and do them, it was 10s of hours before I went into the places where I could get advanced blueprints, it was then 10s more hours before I got deep enough to get all the items I needed for building the stuff (again because I was too busy building up a snazzy looking base and exploring than going to get the resources). Conversely, in Skyrim, I didnt bother with exploring or side quests much at all and just followed the story. I could have postponed the Skyrim story and done more exploration and side quests but like you with Subnautica, I just figured whats the point and stuck to doing the main story. For some reason I played Subnautica differently to the way I played Skyrim, perhaps just because the world of Subnautica clicked with me more than the world of Skyrim did.

:D Keep playing!

I'm about to hit 300 hrs played for the game though that does include a lot of EA gaming. I estimate it took me some 70hrs (my save file is currently at 10days) to finish as I was taking my time and exploring the beautiful world.

It's like any open game as explained above. You can burn through Mass Effect or Witcher but most folks tend to explore their surroundings instead.

What I find most engrossing about the game is that it is very relaxing (much like modded Minecraft) yet very deep when it comes to exploration and story providing you read all the journals.

There is a whole storyline you need to complete before using that rocket, it's unclear if you've done that or not. Get in it, see what happens.

Most people are building their main bases in Safe Shallows as it's conveniently placed for access to all biomes. So that's where they build their rocket. Which is where the Time Capsule is dropped. Which is where the next person starts. Etc.

Keep going deeeeeper :)

Thanks :). I haven't been back on it since, but I looked at the achievements and noticed i'd only got 50%, so wondered if there must be more story left. I'll get back on tonight as i have been itching to do a bit more exploring.

Also i googled time capsules and it seems people can put whatever they like in them, which is really cool, but it also ruined my experience a little by making my seamoth way too good, too soon. I found one with an mk3 depth module, so i could go to 900m very early into the game. When i finally built the cyclopse I noticed it would only go to 500m, so ended up not even using it... Still need to find the upgrades for it to make it viable over my op seamoth.

Tbh even without a time capsule you can build the MK3 Seamoth depth module without that much hassle. By the time I got to needing it (in my first playthrough in EA) it didn't take too long to get the materials and blueprints. Once I had it I hovered around 900m and dived out into some of the lower areas to avoid having to upgrade to higher end PRAWN suit or Cyclops stuff for as long as possible. I think for balance the game could do with moving all the late game stuff about 100M further down.

If you've not used the Cyclops you're definitely not done with the story!

OK so the Lost River is now my new home as I didn't realise 'silent running' used so much power :D

Used like 5% power from my base (shallows) to the Lost River entrance, then like 90% exploring in the Cyclops using silent running to try and avoid the big thing, then suddenly looked at the charge and realised i'd made a big mistake lol. So had to drop down in the Prawn (which luckily has the thermal charging upgrade) and started farming materials to build a temp base. It was actually a pretty awesome gaming experience, but IRL time just disappears when playing this game..

Fine once you get thermal recharge on the cyclops. Before that I always took spare power cells. The upgraded power cells then make it even easier again. I only use silent running when there is an aggressive creature in view or within sonar range. The energy leech creatures can be a pain too. I agree, I never know where the time goes!

I don't use silent running at all.

Making normal Cells shouldn't be an issue by the time you've got a Cyclops anyway so just keep a stash of them in a wall locker on the bridge. If you're under attack just move away from the creatures aggro range or engage shields whilst moving away. Then replace the batteries and make repairs once things have calmed down. Once you get ion tech you're practically in god mode with regards to vehicles.

OK after reading a couple of main reviews elsewhere, I am now asking you good people for an overall rating of how good or bad this game is for the pc? I'm gonna be a year older soon and will be putting this on my "birthday present list", along with the game Surviving Mars, so please list the major pros/cons after having played the game for at least a day. I am the type of person that will spend time looking around rather than trying to complete the game in the quickest way possible.

TY in advance :)

It's a fantastic and unique game that will keep you wanting to do more while building a healthy fear of open waters :D. I sank a good few days of game time into it and its had a lot of continual updates since then, so even more content and lore. It's one of those games that has left a lasting mark, and leaves an itch that suddenly comes back to you now and then. If you have any interest in exploration / crafting / collecting / VR then go for it.

A 10 for me. Sometimes a game comes along where the moment it ends you are immediately sad because its over. Subnautica is one such game, I delayed and delayed as much as I could because I simply did not want it to end.
