Subnautica

OK after reading a couple of main reviews elsewhere, I am now asking you good people for an overall rating of how good or bad this game is for the pc? I'm gonna be a year older soon and will be putting this on my "birthday present list", along with the game Surviving Mars, so please list the major pros/cons after having played the game for at least a day. I am the type of person that will spend time looking around rather than trying to complete the game in the quickest way possible.

TY in advance :)
Best representation of an Early Access title done right. From the sounds of your gaming description (exploratory type), you'll not be able to put this down until you've checked out every nook and cranny. 10/10 and that was how I rated the title when I first played it back during EA after getting a refund from No Mans Sky for purchasing it.

I have 140 hours invested and still love everything about it. 10/10

One of the most (probably the most) atmospheric games I have ever played. Very different to surviving mars, but much better. One of the few games that frequently gets my heart racing.

Just completed it today and i'd give it a 7/10. I explored everything (I think) and my total play time was 57 hours according to steam with 100% achievements, so not the longest survival game for me, but that could have been down to the time capsule I found which allowed me to explore pretty much everywhere from the start. It was a fun experience though and contrary to a lot of people I found it a nice relaxing game with no real threats, but i'm very hard to scare so that could be why. I'd take the Youtube/twitch streams with a pinch of salt as those guys get views for their scared reactions. The story wasn't bad either, pretty interesting and made me want to unearth more of it as I found new areas. I also enjoyed the building aspect, although its a little too simplistic to keep me entertained for long, kinda like Fallout 4's building, although your base is actually useful, so it serves a purpose in this.

Overall a very good game and well worth £20. Although the tight sod in me still wishes I bought it in early access for £7.

Have to say, I agree with every one of his points. I can't believe the criticism is so scant in a lot of other reviews.

There are also a lot of incorrect assumptions in many of his points as noted in the comments underneath. It was a fun game that I have played through twice - think I picked up quite cheap a number of years ago too, so can't complain really. Looking forward to any expansions.

Well I completed it but the last third or so felt like a chore and I just built the pad and rocket and left. Survival games aren't really my "thing" but I genuinely enjoyed the first week of play. The problem was that for me it went downhill and got boring rapidly after that. I am glad I got it really cheap and didn't pay full price but I won't be coming back to it. This genre is just not for me.

Started this yesterday and really impressed so far. Took my first depth dive to around 90m using the air pump and pipes. Should I be trying to build a base around my life support pod after only a few hours? Not keen on using guides for this type of game as it can ruin things.

90m using air pump and pipes? You can do that without them :p

I would certainly have a base near the pod and stockpile as much as you can as you will need a lot of resources later. Definitely avoid guides as much as you can.

Yes, I had the first level of upgraded tank so could get that deep but not explore at all as went through radiation so by the time the rebreather was on I was low.

Can you attach buildings to the lifepod or does it remain separate?

I think it remains separate. Remember to scan everything.

A fix for your ships getting stuck in a wall or floor (works for me when needed):

First move up to where your ship is stuck and then press F1 and then F3 to bring up the settings and see if the "enable console" is selected, then press "Enter" and in the lower left hand corner you will now have a grey box where you will enter "dig 10" (without the quotes) and press "Enter", if your ship has not appeared, then move closer and repeat the "dig 10" command; once your ship becomes visible, enter it and move to a safe distance (away from obstacles) and "save your game", quit and re-enter the game and all should be fine.

What's the performance like now? It's on offer for 15 quid this weekend in support of World Oceans Day and am tempted but reviews of 1.0 mentioned really bad pop-in which I know will bug me.

The more crap you accumulate (like ElderScrolls games), the worse performance gets. Performance seems to drop if you have a medium sized base rammed with resources. Early on in you'll be fine until possibly late game when fps drops a bit.

Said this before, this game gave me the best 100 hours in any game I ever played. Played it all day and night.

After 100 hours, with the limited amount of buildings and items, it can lose it's fun. Right now, am just playing around in Creative building bases in different spots to see how it works out.

There is a major DLC coming soon with a story, so that's something to look forward too.

Cheers for the responses guys, think it's worth fifteen quid so will give it a try, if my PC can't handle it there's always the Steam refund as a back up.

I've tried to avoid spoilers as people have said their biggest regret was going in knowing stuff about the story so here's hoping it runs okay so I can get into it.

Oh if you like exploration games, this will blow you away. I purchased this with the refund money I wasted during the release of No Mans Sky. Racked up over 300hrs and have always stated that it is the best example of a Early Access title by far (back when it was). It's been a while since I played since I literally 'godmoded' the game in terms of resources and I have little left to do other than base expansion, which may lag my game further. I wouldn't worry about pop-in at all.

It is unforgiving at the start (as with most survival games) so just remember - focus on building a knife and a scanner early on in. Firstly spend time with your fabricator and it's recipes.
