Subnautica

Enjoying this more than I thought I would. Stunning maxed out ultrawide 1440p. Very relaxing.

not very relaxing when you are out swimming in the deep dark ocean not knowing whats coming up behind you. I've never been scared in a game before, there's something about not knowing what's down there with you.

Try playing it in VR.

Love the game, it's a fantastic thing when you get the base setup. Soon as you start having to go deep though, it gets too much!!

Never have I been so frit scared playing a game before. I've a phobia of reptiles, predatory things anyway, so Subnautica's nasties swimming around in your entire vision is nothing short of harrowing.

I bought the game months ago, and have only just tried it in VR, couldn’t agree more, I was not expecting this to be as scary as it is, no more Subnautica in VR for me, my heart can’t take it

How do I know where I should build? What if I spend all that time only to find I've built in the wrong area ?

I found the edge of the starting shallows where there’s a decent, flat-ish shelf to build upon to be a good first base location.

Make sure it’s at least 30 metres deep... You’ll thank me later.

Don’t build too close to the kelp beds as you don’t want the local critters outside your front door when you only have the starting dive suit.

Ooh, I just built the massive sub! Took it for a little spin and within a couple of minutes it was totally destroyed by a monster. Gutted. So I decided to start the game again.

As I've spent a few hours now building right next to the escape pod at about 5m, I'm wondering why. But don't tell me!

How big is the map in this game? In the log it says about you being on a 2km x 2km shelf. Can you go further than this? I had a quick mooch in my Sea Moth but it warned me about going too far and then a big monster appeared so I legged it back. And is it very deep? I've not been lower than about 350m. I guess there's a lot I haven't seen as otherwise there doesn't seem to be much point in the submarine.

Stay with the little sub and (walker? .. been awhile).. You can do a lot more and they are cheap to build unless you like having a very slow moving base.

Yeah, I wasn't really prepared for the Cyclops, I had none of the sub systems installed and stuff. I just wanted to see what it was like. And then after it got destroyed, my last save was 2 hours earlier. So I couldn't be arsed. I nearly gave up the whole game. But it has got me hooked so I thought I'd start again a bit better prepared. I didn't realise the little sub had upgrades to increase depth and stuff so I'll keep using that for a while now.

So long ago i played, but if I remember right, when using the Cyclops you MUST have it on silent running (or whatever it is called) all the time to avoid getting targeted.

I did wonder what silent running was for but I didn't know what it did so left it off. I mean, I know what it does on a real sub but it didn't seem to do anything in game.

I used the small sub for 90% of the game. Built the base just off starting shallows where it drops off deep.

I also found it very helpful to build mini bases around whatever biome I'm exploring next. Literally 2 or 3 tubes so I can store stuff for later transport. Doesn't even need air, just get back in your sub after picking up/dropping off.

By far my favourite game of the last 10 years. Can't wait to try it out in VR.

Watch they sonar screen when driving the Cyclops - yellow triangles are things that will attack you if they detect you - red triangles are things that are trying to attack you.

Keep the speed down and don’t cause any cavitation (propeller noise). Keep the external lights off and creep past threats in Silent Running. When surrounded, switch the engine off and coast.

Once you have upgrades fitted, you can operate the Cyclops more aggressively.

Out of interest, what kind of equipment are you using to play this in VR? I've not looked into it at all but it seems perfect for this game!

Might already have heard of this, but "Subnautica Below Zero", which is a full game and not a dlc is being worked on right now and the alpha should be out very soon, so hopefully the full
game will not take too long. I am including a link to an individual who is going over some of latest information on the game (lots of information floating around, but this is up to date):

Runs fine on a 1070/4970 16mb system with a Vive. You get some slow down in the base in some areas, but nothing that'll put you out.
It was mostly the additional non PC equipment I was interested in, the Vive for example! I havent looked into VR at all and was wondering where to start (I have a Titan XP so that should be ok!).
