Summer Transfer Thread 2019

Cripple themselves for years :D
How many years do you think Arsenal and Manu can go around spending Man city money on wages and transfers while not winning anything or getting champions league football? they've been doing it for 5 years and it hasn't worked and see no reason it would now when they look at their lowest. If throwing money at your problem doesn't fix it you don't start throwing even more money at it. Arsenal have 4 30ish year old attacking players on 200k+ who cant even get on the pitch at the same time because they don't compliment each other and then they go and spend 70m on a winger when their defence is one of the worst in the league. Not one of their defenders would get into one of the other top 6 teams.

Manu have more financial power but just waste it. A squad of random players thrown together with no idea how they are meant to play together and all massively overpaid. Could go on all day and night about their failings. Signing English talent hasn't produced results for a long time. Arsenal, Liverpool and spurs have all done it in recent times and it hasn't worked for them.

You're right, we'll be bankrupt within 5 years.

How have Man Utd wasted their money? If anything they have spent wisely this window. We needed a CB, RB, CM. We have two out of three with hopefully another on the way. We have had a fantastic pre season with lots of young talent showing promise. Ole despite what people say about him has the heart and respect from the players to get the job done. I for one am looking forward to this season.

I Like AWB but he isn't exactly proven. Maguire I don't rate. No pace and not good 1 on 1, he plays for a Leicester team that plays a lot of counter attacking football so always has players around him. With Manu expected to be on the front foot or playing attacking football against quality teams I think he'll get massively exposed personally. The main issue is that you spent £135m on them.... £135m I can easily think of 5-10 CB's in the premier league better than Maguire.

This forum...how is 72 million for Pepe "Stonking business" ?

edit

80 mil for a premier league proven cb is better then 72 mil for Pepe....imo of course.
Hehe :p.

Exactly its your opinion regarding our purchase of Pepe. I think imo arsenal have done well to get a player with the terms we put to them. You may not see it that way but that’s you.

And will Maguire live up to his £80mill price tag?? Look at the big signings Utd have made in the past couple of hrs and majority of them haven’t lived up to their price tags. I hope Pepe does well but he will need some time settling in to the PL as he’s coming from a weak league. But then Lacazette came from the same league a few yrs ago and has managed to do pretty well alongside Aubameyang.

You truly do have one hell of a obsession with arsenal I have to admit. Last year you were constantly talking about us, whether it be signings or our results.

Are you a closet Arsenal fan by any chance?? It’s rather bizarre to say the least but also quite funny too. I don’t think I’ve seen another teams fan talk about us so much lol.

Its a transfer forum and Arsenal are signing players...put two and two together.

I did talk about Arsenals signings last summer...i said they were poor and you wouldnt move forward.

I was right by the way.

Such a bizarre statement - Arsenal haven't really signed any English talent in the last few years, while the other 2 clubs you mention reached the Champions League final last year. Man city has also signed English talent in recent years and done pretty well for themselves: sterling, walker, stones.

Robertson is alright as well...British but still. If you go further back you have Gomez as well who should partner VVD this season. Maddison at Leicester Alli at Spurs...all good signings.

Go abroad and you have a winger worth close to 100mil aswell

The Mirror and The Sun are now reporting about the Coutinho deal.

Mirror and sun are hardly reliable sources.

I don’t care about him anyway. We need defenders ffs, not more attacking mids.

True but they do get it right some times.

Embrace the situation Rob, attack!!!

It's just incredibly unlikely. Sounds like a tabloid invented story anyway. We're playing Barca tomorrow tonight in the Joan Gamper trophy, and there's strong rumours about Barca wanting shot of Coutinho. The journos have probably just put 2 and 2 together and come up with 5.

I highly doubt Coutinho would go to another club in England unless it was on a lucrative permanent deal.

Doesn't make any sense for either Coutinho or Arsenal. Was hoping to see some CB news but it's all a bit quiet. We only have a week to go should have sorted this ages ago.

Hehe interesting if the Coutinho rumours are true but massive pinch of salt there.

Need defenders now rather than more attacking players.

It's only spent wisely if they're successful. In Mourinho's first summer you needed a CB, CM, wide forward and striker and when you signed Baily, Pogba, Mhikitarayan and Zlatan Utd fans were wetting themselves with excitement but 12 months on you still needed a CB, CM, wide forward and striker. You then signed Lindelof, Matic, Sanchez and Lukaku and 12 (and then 24 months on) you still needed a CB, CM, wide forward and striker. Everyone and their dog could tell you Utd needed a CB and fullback (plus more), it's getting the right CB and fullback that's the tricky part.

Just like City with Kyle Walker, if Maguire and Wan-Bisaka prove successful then you can swallow the fact you've paid a premium to get them. The issue comes if and when they're not successful because if they don't make it, it will be nigh on impossible to shift them and makes replacing them with the right player 10x harder.

The exact same could have been said about VVD but he turned out good. Buying inside the Premier League has always been expensive and the risk is huge. Just look at Sanchez. He still might come good but without any pre season it looks unlikely. Maguire is a huge risk but he has good stats (some better than VVD from last season) and from what I have seen of AWB he looks the real deal. Such a pleasure to watch compared to what we have had for the past decade.

Our CB situation has been down to Eric Bailey's inability to stay fit. He has just done his knee again and will be out for another 4 months. He was a fantastic prospect when he initially joined but hasn't been fit for a good 18 months now.

Absolutely it was the same with VVD and Alisson too but I'd suggest both were safer bets - VVD, on paper at least, ticked every box and Alisson had already been performing at the highest level.

Re Wan-Bisaka, I think he's a very good defender but I'm sceptical as to whether he's the long term answer at fullback for a side that's aim is surely to challenge at the top. If you'd asked me 2 years ago whether I thought we neede a new RB I'd have said that was the least of our priorities - Clyne had been excellent for us, putting in 8 out of 10 performances nearly every week but now I can't imagine Clyne playing for us again. I think it's fair to say that Liverpool, City and Barca are/were the strongest sides in Europe last year and all 3 sides typically dominate games and one of the the key reasons why they do is because they have fullbacks that are more midfielders than they are defenders. I just don't see Wan-Bisaka being a fullback that can influence games, at the highest level on a consistent basis, from an attacking sense.
