Summer Transfer Thread 2019

Absolutely it was the same with VVD and Alisson too but I'd suggest both were safer bets - VVD, on paper at least, ticked every box and Alisson had already been performing at the highest level.

Re Wan-Bisaka, I think he's a very good defender but I'm sceptical as to whether he's the long term answer at fullback for a side that's aim is surely to challenge at the top. If you'd asked me 2 years ago whether I thought we neede a new RB I'd have said that was the least of our priorities - Clyne had been excellent for us, putting in 8 out of 10 performances nearly every week but now I can't imagine Clyne playing for us again. I think it's fair to say that Liverpool, City and Barca are/were the strongest sides in Europe last year and all 3 sides typically dominate games and one of the the key reasons why they do is because they have fullbacks that are more midfielders than they are defenders. I just don't see Wan-Bisaka being a fullback that can influence games, at the highest level on a consistent basis, from an attacking sense.

That's because he has been defending at Palace so his attacking stats will always look poor (Even still 22% cross accuracy to TTA 25%) but from what I have seen of him in pre season he has been fantastic at going forward. A lot better than Ashley Young. He hasn't put a foot wrong so far and has shown his defensive prowess already from what I have seen in preseason.

I detailed his passing stats and attacking contribution earlier in this thread and he was comparing unfavourably to Van Aanolt (fewer passes, fewer attacking and or high difficulty passes and yet still a lower pass completion rate) and a million miles behind Trent.

Of course it is going to be lower when he was playing for Palace.

I know which is why I compared his stats to van Aanolt too.

....Wan-Bissaka are: 0.4 key passes per game, 0.3 crosses per game, 1 long pass per game and 0 through balls per game, with an average of 33.3 passes per game and total pass completion rate of 73%. van Aanholt's are: 1 key pass per game, 0.3 crosses per game, 1.9 long passes per game and 0.1 through balls per game with an average of 44.7 passes and total completion rate of nearly 80%. van Aanholt plays nearly twice as many attacking/difficult passes per game, 30% more passes yet still completes a higher percentage.

Stats don't always show who is the better player...

In other news Arsenal are now 6/4 favourites to sign Coutinho!

Who is a left back. What if a lot of Palace's play goes down the left?
What if my aunt had balls ;)

But on a serious point, if Palace attack more with van Aanolt than Wan-Bisaka then ask yourself why. I would be very surprised if Palace do attack 40% more down their left than right. Also how often they attack wouldn't effect their pass completion rate (from a positive pov anywa) - their pass success rate is what it is based on the passes they've played, if Wan-Bisaka was involved in more attacks, playing more difficult passes then his success rate would be even lower. This is what makes TAA's stats so good - he plays huge numbers of difficult, higher risk passes and still with a higher completion rate.

From one of the worlds greatest ever defenders

I know how much you want the Coutinho deal to happen, but personally, I would rather put that £27m towards a decent CB than use it to pay for a 2 year loan of yet another midfielder.

I dont even know if Coutinho really suits Arsenal tbh.

And look how it ended, with Liverpool as European champions and Coutinho a spare part at Barca.
He has won two league titles there tbf.

Anyway, I think saying players are too good for clubs is a ridiculous argument. No player is bigger than a football club. Arsenal are still one of the biggest clubs in the world. No player is too good for them. Same goes for Pool, United, Chelsea, City etc.

It's not that I was sitting here hoping we get him, I didn't think he was on our radar at all. If he comes he would definitely make a difference though.

When I saw that stat above, it just made me question why Arsenal defenders are having to work as hard as Leicester defenders are.

We are trying to get some defenders in, the Celtic lad might still come, and we've tried to loan a CB from Italy, you may soon be happy.

What is good is that the club may have finally realised we need to spend some money.

So Messi isn't too good for Stoke? Of course he is. Coutinho is still an elite player and should be playing for one of the top 5-6 clubs in Europe.

Yes, but Stoke are a championship club with limited financial resources and even more limited international presence. That’s not really the best example. I know you want him back, but that’s no reason to **** all over the other clubs who might be after him. I bet you’ve never had one player who you thought was too good for Liverpool, and I doubt there’s any players who you ever thought was too good for Liverpool.

Agreed with Rob, I’d rather us put that £27mill towards a defender ie Tierney.

Think we have enough attacking players now. I don’t see Ozil playing much next season IF Coutinho comes.

It doesn't work like that though.

Coutinho has the ability to play for a top 5-6 club, but if he were to leave Barcelona that is a very limited pool of alternative teams who may neither want nor need him, or even be able to afford him. If we are talking longevity of performance, there is already an attacker at Arsenal who is of a higher reputation (imo). The idea that a player is 'too good' for a club within the tier directly below the mega clubs is a nonsense really.

Well it was an extreme example to disprove what you said. And you really need to stop being so touchy - it's hardly *****ing on Arsenal to say Coutinho is too good to join them. Coutinho would be mad to leave Barca for anybody but a handful of clubs, of which Arsenal aren't one. He's at a club that is competing for the biggest honours in Europe and despite not being pivotal for them, he's still featuring more than enough to not take a step down to a side with no chance of winning either the League or CL.

And of course I've never thought there was a player too good for Liverpool. We're the best team the world has ever seen.
