**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

I dont think spurs have a particulary strong squad really, they have a good front line, but the backup midfielders are failed players really, Jenas,Bentley, are player who have realistically had one good season in the last 5, the defenders are all crocks really.

The front line is where they really have done well, if they can keep them happy, and keep palacios and king fit, they will finish easily top 6 and possibily push, Arsenal and liverpool for 4th.Defoe looks brilliant so far.

In a way the fact we don't have any "superstars" plays into our hands, in previous seasons our playing style was around Carrick and latterly Berbatov. It took us a whole season to transition after losing Carrick as he was the key cog in the system. Likewise without Berbatov as the focal point we had a disastrous start to last season. Now without a stand out player(s) we aren't particularly weakened by a long term injury or losing a player in the transfer window.

Can the same be said for Liverpool (Gerrard/Torres) or even Man Utd (Rooney), Arsenal (Fabregas/Van Persie), Chelsea (Lampard/Terry) for that matter? :p

What about when Rosicky, Eduardo, Diaby, Fabregas, RvP, Walcott, Clichy, Gallas etc were all injured at the same time towards the end of last season and Arsenal didn't lose a game!? (Fair play, we had Arshavin and Nasri to pick up the creative mantle)

Stag's talking crap really. all the top 4 have coped without the players he listed at several points. Spurs are not some sort of super hive mind club where every player is as superb as every other and injuries mean another steps into the breach and is just as great.

Liverpool beat Man United at home without Gerrard or Torres last season

So you are saying Spurs won't be weakened by losing Defoe / Palacios?

Weakened yes, but Pavluchenko and Crouch are both more than able to fill Defoe's boots. As for Palacios he has provided the missing link being in the Graham Roberts/ Dave McKay mould, Jenas isn't the same type of player but it a more than capable stand in for the odd game.

Our first 11 isn't quite as strong but our replacements are arguably stronger, is a more succinct way of putting the last 2 pages of debate. :)

Where did I say that?

I guess people missed the :p at the end of my post. All so serious. :D

I would say Crouch / Russian are a big drop in class from Defoe. Also, you've had Jenas for years and always bemoaned the lack of any steel in midfield.

Jenas is not a "failed" player, whatever that even means. If you want a player who runs all day and covers most of the pitch then he's your man. He doesn't possess the creativity or aggression that makes him stand out though.

Bentley is one for debate, I personally still think he could be a success at the club. His recent drink driving escapade could be the wake up call he needs to drop the "Beckham 2.0" label. His main problem is trying to get past a very in form Lennon.

A failed player is a player who hasnt really been very good for a while, both players have really been pretty much less than ordinary for a while now.

Anybody can run up and down a pitch, that means **** all really.

I wouldn't say they are a "big drop", a drop certainly but they are different kinds of players who both offer something else. Crouch is great for holding the ball up, and is a capable target man. Pavluchenko is a mixed bag, he can also hold the ball up but offers a lot of power. He's also arguably more of an aerial threat than Crouch.

Where as anyone trying to replace a "superstar" is a big drop, Utd's replacement for Ronaldo could only have been a "big drop" as he was so good. Likewise if Arsenal lose Fabregas either to injury or Barca offering silly money the replacement will be a "big drop".

;)

Jack Wilshere is probably being lined up to be Cesc's replacement and if Wenger manages his development well he might not be much of a step down at all!

Bentley had one bad season, where Spurs self destructed at the start of the season and he turned to the playboy lifestyle. You don't go from being a very good player to a "failed" player in one season.

Jenas will always divide fans, he doesn't score that many goals and doesn't create hat fulls of goals. But don't for one second think that makes him a "failed" player. He is a top 6 quality midfielder, but not more than that; just because he didn't fulfil his early promise does not make him a bad player.

You suggested Spurs would not be affected by a long term injury, where the top 4 clubs would be. Which is simply not true.

Quote me where I said that.

Note the word 'particularly', we will surely be weakened by losing a first teamer, but not as much as a club losing a "superstar" who raises the bar of the entire club.

When was he a very good player!? I remember him having a couple of good games for Blackburn and being one of their better players, but he was never very good.
