Of course he's an out and out goal machine!

In his first season in England he's scored 16 with a bit part role, he could easily be a 20+ goalscorer when he's first choice.

Doesn't always work that way though does it. You can be a bit part player and score 16 goals and then be a regular and still only score the same amount.

He looks quite good but out and out goal machine...

He reminds me of solskjaer. More of an impact player.

I
How many teams have four top quality strikers?

and how many top teams don't have a star center forward who plays most of the games up top without being messed around and shunted into the midfield and on to the wings?

One, Manchester united.

Certain members on here seem to just think having lots of players is enough, it isn't if they are not good enough. Just trotting out the names of Rooney, Owen,Diouf,Macheda,Berbatov and Hernandez means there are no problems, well there are one of them is useless for 50 percent of the season and not certain to be much better for the other 50 percent, one is never fit, two are completely unproven and haven't pulled up any trees when they have played, and one has been sort of ok in a side fighting relegation scoring a couple of goals.
Leaving Rooney and Hernandez, neither of which are line leading star strikers despite scoring a fair amount of goals between them.

Not many but have a think back to the 90's when we had Cole/Yorke/Sheringham/Solskjaer

If you want to be fighting on all fronts you need players of that quality to step in when you have injuries/suspensions.

I don't think we'll ever go back to 4-4-2 with Fergie, either it's not in his mind set or it's not part of the modern game any more. No team will ever have 4 top quality strikers (well maybe the billionaire funded ones will.

It's just too difficult to keep them all happy, we were fortunate that we had Solskjaer who was content being a bench impact sub.

A lot like Hernandez then ;)

Maybe true - but if thats the case (that Utd will never have a 4th striker) personally think we definitely need a regular goal-scoring AM instead - as if this isnt necessary anyway :)

SAF is quoted as saying Utd will be buying "two or three players" in the Summer...... so that could still mean anything lol - I just hope that if it is (only) 2 or three, one isnt the guy from Southampton , Alex Chamberlain is it?, as he is more for the future rather than right now. With a gk which is a definite, that leaves one outfield player being bought for the 1st team which imo isnt enough (given the 5 or so players we are going to lose)

SAF has also said that the club will again look for young players - this could have course be a potential distraction, but if its true then no Sneijder / VdV (even if either was a realistic possibility)

I wouldnt be that surprised if Berba was included in a swap for a younger striker or one more versatile (ie able to play effectively wide etc), especially if the deal negotiations are still ongoing in the summer (as he only has 12 months left I believe)

Regarding Berbatov contract talks are due very soon with him not having long left on his current deal so I guess he could be sold but tbh even if that happens I expect us to line up in a 4-3-3 next season meaning we'll only be playing with Rooney anyway

Admittedly a home game against a mixed side (ie not completely senior) in a competition that isnt 1st priority - but I wouldnt be surprised seeing Rooney being deployed centrally in the 2nd bank of 3 like in the Arsenal FA Cup game (and probably what could happen in CL against Chelsea)

something like

De Gae

Rafael Smalling Vidic Evra

Fletcher - Rooney - Carrick

Valencia Chicarito Nani

With one or both of Fletcher or Carrick being sold or used as sub and a decent young midfielder coming in to the 1st team (Pastore would be amazing but cost will put Utd off Im sure - edit actually he probably wouldnt fit in that formation but good quality box to box player)

I don't watch Utd enough to say, but he always seems to score goals even if he's sometimes criticised for not working hard enough.

Ah you said line leading striker, of which he is not ;)

Great for half a season but that's no good to us, look decidedly off the pace every time he's on the pitch lately.

To be honest he's barely played lately though, got to be pretty demoralising to be rewarded for your best season at the club, being top scorer in the league....by being dropped.

He was dropped after 3-4 **** performances, I don't think Berbatov is dumb enough to think in that kind of form he is going to be first choice, especially with the partnership that Rooney and Hernandez have.

This is what was said:

Question: (speaking of Paul Scholes and Giggs nearing end of careers, do you feel need to bring in more younger ones, and with club debt think you have funds for that)

Answer: We have certain targets in mind at the moment, and 2 or 3 will be fulfilled. Glazers always been very supportive in desires to improve team, where we our good is bringing young players, Ronaldo, Rooney, Chico, we are good at that so I don't see why we should change. With Hernandez we have some of the best young strikers in country, Welbeck, Diouf, also a good prospect. We are particularly strong with young strikers for some strange reason. We will continue and when the right young players are identified, that is the way we will go.

To me it's very much going to be buying younger players, I can also see a possible swoop for an experienced GK, but I can't see him going for an older player anywhere else on the pitch, they will be young I think.

We'll never play Rooney in midfield on a permanent basis, I expect this to be our team for most games next season

-----------------Goalkeeper---------------
Rafael-----Ferdinand------Vidic------Evra
---Fletcher--New Midfielder--Carrick/Anderson--
Valencia---------Rooney----------Nani

With everyone being fit of course

Is playing in the hole really midfield though?

Maybe it was a little further back than that but not much.

Maybe more 3 - 1 - 2 - 4

Just a thought anyway

Also worth thinking about that with two back to back American international comps next summer, its possible Chicharito may not be used much at the start of the season

laughs at the possibility of Rio being available for most games

I just looked at your formation and it showed him in midfield thats all

Why did you put him in your team then? :p

Kolarov apparently moving to AC Milan.

Would like him to stay because he hasn't had much impact yet but if we do sell i would love Coentrao although i think he is going to Bayern.
