Wiki says £10m + 2, probably about the right price, maybe 15 now considering he did have a very god year, but 19 is up there with Henderson-ridiculous.

Can't see Sunderland being the team to sign Connor Wickham if i'm honest. Ipswich will hold out for more and he will want to go somewhere a bit bigger than Sunderland I think, especially if he knows a lot of teams are after his services.

surely sunderland is the ideal place for him at this stage in his career

you only have to look as far as welbeck and sturridge that if you want to develop as a player you wont get the opportunity at a larger club..as it happens those 2 went on loan, but their prospects may be limited again this season..the big clubs just wont take the risk

but theres no reason why he couldnt sign for Sunderland on a 3 year deal and have a buyout clause put in your contract so if he does well then its easy to move on...he is only 18 or something, why go and rot in the reserves of a top 4 club, when he could be playing and making other teams sit up and take notice

I hope we get Welbeck back this season..he came on leaps and bounds last season playing regularly..even united fans must acknowledge that, but he wont get the same opportunites this season sitting on the bench

I suppose £19m wont give them that much of a profit then, so how much would you be selling him for after a good season? Tough one this.

Sturridge is a striker who needs to be in a 4-4-2, and went to a team that plays mostly a 4-3-3, and has better strikers frankly.

Welbeck had quite a few chances at Utd, he simply looked woeful, not just average, but awful, really awful.

Its about how good you are, not your age, Rooney, Fabregas, top teams have no problem playing younger players, Mikel started in the Chelsea team at 18-19 aswell.

While Welbeck improved over his time at Utd, how good he was is being completely overblown, in 26 appearances he scored 6 goals, 4 of them came in 3 games, all together, against 2 teams woefully out of form, and Wolves. Good form happens, his other 2 goals were shortly after aswell. Sturridge scored 8 goals, in 7 different games, in 12 appearances total, that shows a bit of consistancy. Welbeck scored 6, in 4 different games, in 26 appearances, and frankly looked completely rubbish for half his games as he did at Utd.

I'd have to agree that £19,000,000 is not good value for money. He had a good year, but one good season doesn't make you a £19 million player.

I agree whole heartedly, but if Villa were to sell, as they bought him for around £12-15m and he was one of their best players last season, they would need some sort of a profit. That's only if clubs are mad enough to pay that sum of money for an average player.

It's crazy to think if Downing is worth £19m, what are the likes of Lennon/Walcott worth??

exactly. this is why it has gotten stupid and man city must take a large portion of the blame for this.

So in the event that Liverpool do sign Downing for 19m since Kenny's return their transfers will have been

Carroll - 35m
Suarez - 23m
Hernderson - 16m
Downing - 19m

93m

Suarez looks like a bargain at 23m though ;)
Carroll's price is unimportant, he cost us 0 and was fully dependant on the Torres to Chelsea deal. We wanted Carroll + 15mill for him, so Chelsea were at our and Newcastle's mercy a bit with that one.

True, but they also sold Torres for £50m so it suddenly is half of that.

If you look back when they signed Carroll and Suarez and if your figures are correct, then they got them both for £3 million out of their pockets? Good bit of business or what?

Hope and expect we won't pay £19m for him but it's not a surprise Villa want that sort of fee for Downing. They paid £12m for him while he had a broken foot and he's gone on to become a far better player than he was. Add the fact that Villa fans are ****ed off with Lerner for appointing McLeish and are losing Young too, they were never likely to allow their player of the year to leave without a fight.

The fee Utd have paid for Young won't have helped either. I really didn't expect Young's fee to be much more than £10m; like Downing, he's only worth ~£15m at the best of times let alone with only 1 year left on his deal.
