still not good enough to win the champions league. i dont think even with their current squad either they could topple the likes of real madrid never mind barcelona.

man city has spent over £300m i would guess, yet look at them.

The debate wassn't whether they're good enough but whether or not RA has spent enough.

Chelsea have a £300m squad and all but Lampard (and Terry, who wasn't signed) were signed post-RA. That doesn't include the money spent on players bought by RA that have since left either (probably another ~£200m).

Chelsea aren't as good as Barca but it isn't down to a lack of money spent on transfers, which you claimed.

so what other way do they have of winning the champions league if its not replacing their old players with young and replacing their mediocre players with class.

both of those take money, abromovich is an idiot, he needs to choose 1 world class manager and let him do what he wants. sacking manager's left right and centre, is doing nothing but harm to the club.

I don't disagree with any of that, I disagreed with your original claim that RA hasn't spent enough on transfer fees.

Anybody that thinks that is either taking the **** or nuts.

Letting Mourinho do what he want did the most damage, sign every single hot property in Europe for outrageous wages and high fee's in general, get rid of half of them a year later, let Mourinho get rid of some of the best players for no real reason, replace them with crap.

Sorry but Mourinho by and large did what he wanted for 2 years, and the cost of that was hundreds of millions on players who had already left, and wage sucking rubbish like Ferreira, Kalou, Malouda, while he let Robben leave. Bought striker after striker, while sinking money all over the place on people who weren't good enough. Complained to high heaven about Ballack, who was pretty decent.

Roman owns the club, he pays for everything at the club, its laughable when people go on and on about the manager should get to do what he wants. This is business, no manager at any club does exactly what he wants.

Ancelloti oversaw the worst period at the club since Roman arrived, spent more money on what everyone else was saying was the best striker in the world, and had a manager that couldn't get anything out of him. I don't think Ancelloti did badly, but he didn't do fantastically well either, was it his fault, who knows. Did Roman or Ancelloti buy Ramires, did Ancelloti say "hell yeah I want Torres, go get him for any price", or did he say "I think he's rubbish at the moment, wait till the end of the season see what happens".

Chelsea weren't title contenders, Roman came in, they've won countless titles, anyone that says he's been rubbish is truly an idiot.

Thats where we differ, I wouldnt manage a team where I had to win just one specific thing and if I didnt, no matter what else I did, I get sacked for not winning that one specific thing. Just different people have different thoughts, as I say, for some its a drink of refreshing nectar, for me its a poison chalice. :)

Admittedly Roman has clearly got his eyes on one particular thing, and with his efforts to get that one particular thing he has seen fit to sack most of the best rated managers in world football within the space of several years. No matter what else happens, I'm the sort of person who doesnt want a sacking on my cv :)

Totally agree (admittedly sometimes it cant be helped)

The way prices are (if this budget is to be believed) he will be lucky to get three or four players.....I guess it still depends on if he gets the funds from selling other players on top, or just that original sum

1) Testing himself in (any) different league - let alone one of the top ones in the world

2) Getting used to a new club , and probably the toughest /most demanding and ruthless owners around

3) Sometimes scouts dont get it right, or players take a while to get used to a new league, or tactics are so different the game /season is gone before you know it (and then your job if you are Chelsea manager)

4) He isnt experienced at all, and while by all intents and purposes his future looks incredibly bright......he could easily be managing Lens in League 2 by next summer

5) It will be interesting to see how he manages the egos in the Chelsea dressing room....

Young's had his medical at United today, the deal will be made official either tonight or tomorrow (apparently)

Glad Utd can finally move onto other targets, but I still think £16/17m with one year left on his contract is a very steep price to pay for a 25 year old with little Int / Euro experience who isnt that big a scorer either

At this rate Utd could end the summer generating more from sales than SAF has spent (if any of the rumours are true regarding Nani / Berba / Park etc) which would be a scary thought going into the season

You do realise it was Abramovich who was the one who kept wanting to make the big money signings and forcing mourinho to play them, which was part of the reason he left.

Well Roman does provide the money he isnt helping dropping managers constantly, Carlo didn't deserve the sack he had just done the double the season before yes they didnt challange near the end but they still finished 2nd, I also HIGHLY doubt Torres was his buy since Roman chased him from us for 3 seasons.

They do need to re-build a little bit but they also have to stick with one manager for atleast 3 seasons changing it so much just disrupts i cant imagine having to learn new ways of each manager is fun for them either.

So it looks like the price for Downing is £19m. Got to say that I wouldnt be overly happy if we spent £19m on Downing, I think there are others I'd rather spend that on before considering Downing.
