IF true and a big IF, Should Modric go it would just open the gates for likes of Bale/Lennon etc to walk also.

I don't see why, clubs sell players all the time as pointed out by DM. Heck just look at Spurs, they sold Berbatov to MU for a fee in excess of £30m, did that open the floodgates for other 'stars' to leave? No, not really.

Fact is I don't really see what the fuss is about with Modric, decent player, cost a lot of money, could move him on for even more money, Spurs already have 5 billion players so just slot someone in, job done. In fact the parallels with Berbatov are uncanny, both players cost over £10m, both proved they could handle a couple of years in the Prem, both could be cashed in on and replaced by players already at the club.

Berbatov was never replaced, and no one currently at the club could replace Modric. That's tosh.

But if Modric was sold I don't believe Spurs would slip down the table. Nobody at Arsenal could replace Fabregas when he inevitably goes, the same as nobody at Man Utd could replace Ronaldo. One player doesn't make a team.

To be fair my memory has failed me, I had this vision that Spurs had at least 3 of Bent, Keane, Defoe and Pavlechenko lined up to fill the striker berths at the time but the reality is that Keane had been sold and Defoe loaned out prior to Berbatov's sale, and Pavlechenko didn't arrive until shortly after.

As for replacing Modric, as we were informed at the start of the season, Spurs supposedly have an unrivaled second XI so surely it should just be a case of moving somebody up the pecking order? Now I know players have different roles within the team so cannot be viewed as like-for-like but if Spurs have Bale, Lennon, Jenas, Huddlestone, Krankjaer, Pienaar, VdV, Palacios, Sandro, Rose, Bentley etc all queuing up to fill 4-5 spaces then either Modric is replaceable or Spurs are wasting their time and money having some of those players on their books. Maybe a few too many wideboys but lets say you put Lennon and Bale on the wings, even take VdV out of the equation and play him off Crouch or whatever, that still leaves some players who could play in the middle, there could be say Palacios holding and give someone else a bit more of a creative license.

Now I don't blame Spurs for coming out with the 'not for sale' stuff, it is still early days in the transfer window and they will want to extract as much cash from potential suitors as they can. Play hard to get, throw in a few rumours about moneybags clubs like Chelsea or Man City being intrested and bleed MU dry. Anything over £30m would be good business.

Palacios is practically out the door. Pienaar has shown nothing so far in a Spurs shirt. Huddlestone and Sandro would be my preferred centre partnership with Modric gone. Kranjcar and Jenas are also thought of as being unloaded this Summer... if we can find a buyer...

So really, we're either not going to sell, or we'll have to find a 'replacement'.

I say sell for £35m and buy Nasri for £15m. :p

Maybe not directly replaced but the team as a whole improved/moved forward.

I don't think much of DM's comparison to Utd selling Ronaldo or Barca selling Eto'o etc because they are/were stronger all round sides but there's definitely an argument that selling Modric for an extortionate amount could enable Spurs to improve as a side.

Even if you only managed to bring in a steady CM and spent the bulk of the money bringing in a top striker, the side could be better for it.

I think Modric is a decent player and had a very good season but I do think he's a bit of a luxury player that may restrict the side (especially with VdV around too) and he's too much style and not enough substance. It's obviously not through a lack of ability but imo down to Spurs still not finding the best position/system for him.

He's done well in CM but without him chipping in with more goals and assists, your midfield can be a bit toothless as of course you can't really play an attacking midfield alongside him.

I used to think the same when Alonso was at Liverpool and it was only when we switched to the system with Gerrard off Torres and Benayoun & Kuyt pushed right forward that we solved it. I'm not sure Spurs have got the players to play that sort of system though.

Controvertial: Nasri is a better player than Modric.

Both are good, but I prefer Nasri.

VdV is more than capable of doing what Modric was doing. If they get more than £25m for Modric they'll have done very well.

Never understood how Kranjcar doesn't get a game at Spurs, he always looked very good whenever I saw him play, can he not play centrally or on the right?

Not allowed in Harry's circle of friends.

It went wrong for Krunchie when he came back for pre season last year far to out of shape. It took him a good few months to shed the pounds and get match fit, at this point we were already moving into October.

Harry strikes me as the type of manager that gives a player very few chances, and unfortunately for Kranjcar I think he used them all up.

Shame as he is a very gifted player who I'd love to see in the team more.

They're completely different kinds of players, VdV is a luxury flair player who excels as a 2nd striker. Modric is an industrious cart horse with magic feet.

That's not controversial, it's just stupid. :p

VdV and Modric are completely different players. They both have fantastic technique but they use it in different ways. VdV is all action, Modric is tactically disciplined. One is a second striker in the Rooney mould, one is a deep-laying playmaker.

As for Krankie, I think the problem is that he's too slow and too showy. Harry doesn't trust him in the middle and he hasn't got the pace for the flanks. I like him but he can be a bit of a Match of the Day player - scores some absolute belters but you sometimes forget the 20 he ballooned over the bar from distance.
