VdV is more than capable of doing what Modric was doing. If they get more than £25m for Modric they'll have done very well.

Spurs would get murdered if VDV was part of a 2 man midfield. He doesn't have the discipline to play there let alone the positional sense. VDV wants to be involved in the final third he doesn't want to be picking it up of his back 4 and sitting in midfield something Modric does brilliantly.

TBH I'd say Spurs need another midfielder even with Modric in the side, Sandro is still a bit of an unknown (great against Milan but hardly figured against Real), I guess Huddlestone is an option but personally I'd say Parker + Modric would be a stronger pairing.

Goes without saying that they need to get a top class striker in as well with having the likes of Crouch & Defoe as backups

--------------Friedel------------
Walker--Dawson--Gallas--BAE
Lennon--Parker--Modric--Bale
-------------VDV----------------
----------------Striker----------

Subs: Cudicini, Hutton, Kaboul, Huddlestone, Sandro, Crouch, Defoe

Doesn't look to shabby that, I'd take that over City or Liverpool's starting XI without a doubt

Sandro is awesome, he's the best ball winning midfielder Spurs have had in a long time, his all round game is good too, great engine and good technique. His presence in the side frees Modric to do more attacking, with Huddlestone in the side Modric has to stay back a bit more.

i hope he has a belter of a season this august and that the talk of him asking his agent to find him a club with cl qualification is nonsense. i'd like walker and rose to start pushing for first team rights too. could be exciting times for tottenham, still not convinced if harry is the man to take us to the next level though.

I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable with VdV taking a leading role in midfield. He drifts in out too much of the game and looses interest.. Furthermore, i find he upsets the balance of the side... Picks up too many injuries and bookings for my liking too. I'm not his biggest fan .. We have quality midfielders, that work hard, are creative, great at attacking, going forward and defensive but only Modric has all those. Losing him, as I read this week, would be like selling the club. £25m is not enough imho, not when the likes of Carroll and and Torres are sold for a combined £85m.. Both of them are only a fraction the player Modric is. If he is to go, then for god sake Spurs, make sure you cash in on him well.. If he means that much to Chelsea, then they can pay more than the ridiculous £25m for him.

I think he's capable, i'm not sure the Levy is so serious though.

Controvertial: Nasri is a better player than Modric.

Both are good, but I prefer Nasri.

Sure, he probably could. For about one half. VDV doesn't seem to have the engine to keep going all match.

And he lacks positional discipline so playing him in the centre of a 4 man midfield could be dangerous.

If anything, VDV caused us a massive headache as far as formations go.

Sandro looks a great player, but I'm holding back from singing his praises until a bit into this season. Palacios looked a Spurs players for years to come when he first joined.

Unless you're referring to his injuries, I don't get this. Granted, he forces you to play Crouch that hasn't scored enough but your other strikers haven't either. VdV is the only player in your side that you can rely on for goals if/when he's fit.

Even if you address your forward issues, your midfield 4 will still lack goals. I don't think you can look to any of Lennon, Bale, Modric or Sandro to score on a regular basis.

I'd call having to play Crouch when we want to play VDV a headache. :p

No but when that partnership started to dry up for whatever reason, we tried VDV in the same position with other strikers which didn't work, probably due to the striker. Then we tried playing him on the right wing but he was out of the game too much out there. And of course, the regular starts for Crouch to aid VDV were taken as a personal preference for Crouch by Redknapp, hence all this favourites nonsense.

I've never been a real fan of 4-4-1-1 either. Pavlyuchenko deserved more chances than he got last season.

Problem is he's a forward that drops back and likes to make deep runs. This means if you're either a striker down and/or intrudes on the attacking midfield area where the likes of Modric like to occupy. He kind of takes up two positions. I think that's what Skip means.

I could understand if your other forwards were banging goals in but they weren't. VdV/Crouch was far from perfect but it seemed to me as if they were far and away your best pairing though.

No matter whether you played a 4-4-1-1 or a 4-4-2 without VdV, you lack goalscorers. I can't think of many top sides over the last 10 years that haven't had 3+ players in their side that they can rely on for goals.

Short of bringing in 2 strikers that will score you 25+ goals a season, Spurs are going to have to address the lack of goals from their midfield 4 before they can go on to the next level imo.

I'd be surprised if Spurs broke back in to the top four in the near future tbh, I think for the next few years it'll be United, Chelski, Arsenal, City.

I think a lot will depend on who goes, who stays and who comes in for Arsenal and City tbh. United and Chelsea despite their deficiencies are probably assured of a top 4 finish but I'm not so sure about City even with Tevez (certainly less so without him) and Arsenal without Fabregas. Spurs will need to keep hold of Modric though as without him they're screwed.

Textbook from Barca, £40m on some Brazilian kid who is quite tricky and dynamic, had 1 decent season. £40m on another South American who has had one good season. A world class CM/CAM who has been amazing for 5 years? £27m. Of course.
