"You have gonorrhea"
"****"
"But you could have had AIDs"
"wow, when you put it that way I am one lucky bunny"

ok, you win.

However, supposedly there is a "gentlemen's agreement" amongst top clubs that they won't exploit this rule to bring in players from other clubs. Obviously with Spurs not being a top club however, this may not apply, theoretically Chelsea could give Modric £10m quid for him to buy out his Spurs deal or whatever.

right, so by top club i assume you mean utd and chelsea?

I think I'll go on holiday next summer so I can miss the transfer window, I dont know whether I'm coming or going with all this on again off again BS the English media publish :(

"Top club" in this context means those regularly competing in the CL at the time article 17 was introduced, which (in terms of English clubs) would exclude anyone other than MU, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Of course I've never seen a concrete definition of what clubs are privy to this agreement, from what I can gather it is wider than G14 as some Russian clubs are involved, basically it is hearsay (as you'd expect from a gentleman's agreement).

I'd take Hargreaves and Cole at Leeds :)

Konchesky, Poulsen, Jones and Jovanovic too?

From what I can remember, not only did the so called top clubs agree not to take advantage of the rule to take players from other top clubs but they wouldn't take advantage of it at all. In fact I remember reading that the 'top clubs' were funding a legal challenge made by a small club where a player had bought out his deal.

edit: and it looks like the Adam deal is in the region of £7m (some say less), potentially rising to £8.5m. He's no superstar by any stretch of the imagination but for £7-9m, he's not a bad addition to the squad.

There's a lot of talk that our owners and Comolli are big on their stats; I read earlier that around 1/3 of goals scored come from set-plays and last season Liverpool scored the 2nd fewest goals from set-plays, compared with Blackpool (Adam being their main set-play taker) who scored the most in the Premier League.

Jovanovic maybe, the other 3 wouldn't be though. Konchesky didn't always start when he was on loan at Forest at the end of last season and Jones was Boro's 2nd choice keeper, and Poulsen's just ****.
Give him £10m, then have it taxed at 50%, lol.

Give him £20m then. Still less than what Spurs will demand.

As above though, it won't happen. I'm not sure what happened or whether this legal challenge being made by this small club is still going on but at the moment this rule seems far from concrete and no high profile player will take the chance until it's clear.

edit: Don't think it's been mentioned but along with Adam, we're likely to tie up a deal for Roma keeper Doni. A £1.5m deal for him fell through the other week after we (according to him) asked him to take a 60% pay cut but reportedly Roma have offered to give him a pay-off and waived the £1.5m fee (which I assume will be passed on to him in wages) and he should be having his medical before the end of the week.

I thought that'd always been mentioned. Anyway, hardly surprising, considering their background.

This, for example, http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...iples-such-as-Moneyball-and-Sabermetrics.html

Yes I know, I was just pointing out how he fits in with the owners/Comolli's thinking too.
Well yes, but I guess my point was more that half could get eaten up through tax... so it could cost loads, but it's almost pointless discussing before we know the ballpark figure any compensation would be.

Of course. If the rule is solid then it could save clubs a lot of money but it all depends on the individual player.

With the way wages for the very top players are anywhere from £6m-£10m per year, when you take the tax into consideration it could cost anything up to £60m to buy a player out of his contract.

Dont worry - its already been rejected (according to a few websites)

Now in the case of Modric, he signed his current deal in summer 2008 so will be eligible to buy it out this summer. He signed a six year deal so would have to pay 3 years salary to Spurs (and possibly a portion of his original transfer fee, not sure).

I could have sworn Modric signed an extension 12 months ago or so - so he has approx 5 years left on his present contract ( I seem to recall that being mentioned when Chelsea first made the offer)
