Summer Transfer Window 2021/2022

exactly. They aren’t going to just sign someone just because.

They should be signing someone who has potential to fill the rolls of an aging midfield to continue the legacy. It is pretty much what all the top dynasties have done. If Liverpool were never going to be replacing Gini then they should have just given him the wages Instead of letting him go on a free.

It is not like it has happened out of thin air either. They have had a whole season.

I think it would surprise most people to know that we have more CM options now than we did in the 18/19 and 19/20 seasons. Wijnaldum was effectively replaced by Thiago last season with a lot of speculation that Wijnaldum was going to go last summer - we chose last season to have an extra midfielder, instead of another CB. I think a big part of the reason why people want us to sign another midfielder (myself included) is the madness of last season, when all our CB's picked up huge injuries, forcing Fab and Hendo to play CB a lot, both of these + Thiago also ended up missing 2+ months of the season with injury themselves. You'd like to think something like that can't happen again - it's certainly the only time in my lifetime that I can remember an injury situation like that, at Liverpool at least.

Regardless of the paranoia of last season repeating itself, there's still an argument for signing another midfielder but I'm not sure it's the end of the world if we don't. In an ideal world you'd like to bring somebody in as a long term successor to Hendo, who will move into the Milner squad role in coming seasons but it's a numbers issue for us right now. We have 7 CM's + Elliott as another option right now, you cannot sign an 8th. With Shaq & Minamino still on the books it's not as if you can say there will be x amount games for Keita, Jones, Elliott & Ox in more advanced roles.

Anyway, it's being reported that Lyon have made an approach for Shaqiri (which would explain his absense in our friendly today) however there's a bit of a gap between valuations with Lyon wanting to pay £5-7m and us wanting £12m. Hopefully something is agreed there as that will make room for another arrival, whether in attack or midfield.

Whats your thoughts regarding a forward/striker , there was a lot of talk last season in various circles that we really needed a better alternative up front than Origi and there were many last season who were saying that we need a better central forward in the number 9 "role", perhaps playing Firmino behind etc. Do you think a new forward is needed (in case Mane and Firmino dry up again) or do you think the front line is sufficient as is

They've also signed Thiago and got Jones coming through. It's a risk, yes, but signing another player at this point just stifles Jones's development and he's done nothing to deserve that.

It's the same position City were in last year when Silva left and they gave Foden a chance. I'm not saying it will work as well for Liverpool but it's an understandable and worthwhile gamble

I certainly wasn't one of the people saying we need a number 9, in fact I've always said that unless you're signing a superstar number 9 then it's no point. I think our attacking situation is very similar to our midfield with us now having a genuine front 4 with Jota's arrival, more than we had in seasons when we won the CL and League. Again like the midfield, you'd ideally want to bring another body in that can compete today but with also one eye on being a long term replacement for one of the front 3. Unless that somebody is so good that you'll change your style of play for then I'd look to bring in another Salah/Mane/Jota type wide forward and the one I'd like is Doku. His numbers at Rennes haven't been amazing but he looks like he's got something real special and would be natural competition and a successor to Mane, freeing up Jota to play centrally more.

I think any midfielder we sign needs to be a more defensively minded midfielder as cover/competition and to eventually replace Henderson in the first team. Jones is more of an attack minded midfielder so I don't think there will be too many issues there.

Messi was 8-1 to join Barca and 1-20 to join PSG yesterday and I almost put a bet on him signing for Barca. Those odds have been cut in half. I still think he stays at Barca with La Liga cutting Barca some slack.

Nah, hes gone. Its given Barca a get out of jail free card with their fans and Barca have bigger issues. They need to start again really and try to use their academy and their name to rebuild the club instead of paying massively inflated transfer fees for signings that don't fit their needs. This might help them long term.

Maybe he is but if he has gone completely im gob smacked La Liga didnt step in and allow it.

He was never staying after the speech and standing ovation. I'm hearing something about PSG are willing to take a hit in 3 years time with sanctions or something?

Actually happened then, I was expecting a last min change from La Liga, however not to be.

I would have been crying getting around 600k a week... crying with joy all the way to Paris.
