Summer Transfer Window 23/24

You say West Ham won't walk away but they're not going to pay over and above what they think is reasonable

This is the key part. What they think is reasonable. Not "what we think reflects his situation at United". Of course they will try to lowball us, why wouldn't you. If they are happy to pay £25m for him they aren't going to walk away if United want £25m simply because they think United are desperate. They won't cut off their nose to spite their face.

You're missing the point though fez. West Ham and Utd are not going to sit down and honestly tell the other what the maximum they'll bid/minimum they'll accept on day one. It's going to be a negotiation. West Ham might be willing to pay £25m but they won't tell Utd that if they believe Utd could be pressured into taking £15m or £20m. It's going to be a case of who blinks first and unless either West Ham are dead set on Maguire or a number of other clubs come in, West Ham could wait all summer before making their best offer but will Utd call their bluff and wait for it or will they blink first and accept £15m or a loan (for example). Or maybe West Ham's best offer doesn't even meet Utd's minimum.

It's all a big dance and David Moyes has more moves than ETH :p

Partey out, Lavia in apparently. Honestly don't recall seeing Lavia play before, is he any good?
50 million on a guy that's played 30odd top flight games - very highly rated but exceptionally raw is my take ( admittedly that's only from seeing him in about 5 games). As baz says a lot of chatter involving big clubs (Liverpool, Chelsea and yourselves) but no bids yet at the rumoured price)

Leeds are finally signing someone, Ampadu from Chelsea. I thought he was about 30 and had about 25 loan clubs, but he's actually only 22 and not many clubs on his books. He's also had three consecutive relegations in 20, 21 and 22 so he will be used to disappointment. Could be a good signing regardless.

I thought you were buying Phillips off us? :(

Arsenal are far and away the biggest spenders since arteta became manager, they have to start winning something sooner rather than later
I'm not so sure Arsenal are "far and away" the biggest spenders, he's spent just under £600m gross I think. Last season alone Chelsea spent about that, they've also spent around £100m this summer and £100m in 21/22.

Chelsea have only bought 3 players so far haven't they? Nkunku/Jackson/Angelo for around 100 million and sold Havertz/Mount/Kovacic/Koulibaly/Pusalic/Mendy/Loftus-Cheek for around 200. Think they did something similar in 21/22. Somehow they manage to make a profit flogging off the 'deadwood' every few years.

Your point wasn't that Arsenal are the biggest spenders this summer, it's that they're the biggest spenders since Arteta came in.

It's true, but they're only about £40m ahead of United, and I'd expect United to overtake them over the remainder of the summer (particularly if Arsenal sell Balogun for £30m or so).

The figures in that link are wrong. Figures for last season won't be available for another 6-9 months (Utd's sooner) but for 20/21 Arsenal's net spend was £96m and 21/22 was £144m. Chelsea's was £190m and a profit of £16m and Utd's was £94 and £116m.

edit: Utd's 22/23 summer spend from their Q1 accounts was £201m net.

Fair enough! I've learned from past experience that you know far more than me about football finances!

The problem with finances are that clubs don't publish their accounts until 9 months after the year end which means how much a club has spent this summer won't be public until around March 2025. All these news outlets aren't waiting 20 odd months to get the correct figures and are just using newspaper reports which are usually very wrong.

Unless they’re floated on the NYSE.

That link also includes transfers from before Arteta was manager. Pepe, Tierney, Saliba etc will be included in 2019/20 but he wasn't manager when they signed so that's over £100m gross that you can't attribute to Arteta.
So even if we are talking net spend (which wasn't stipulated) I still don't think Arsenal are far and away biggest spenders.

Any hope anybody has of getting Colwill out of Chelsea have been hit with the reports that Fofana's done his ACL. He's on track to become even more unlucky than Joe Gomez - a broken leg, 2 x 2 month knee injuries last season and an ACL in the space of 2 years.

Regardless of how much Arteta has spent compared to the other teams around Arsenal, there will be great expectations this season. They have spent a lot of money and they came second last season. Anything less than a title challenge after another big summer of spending will be seen as a bit of a failure. Anything outside of top 4 would be a bit of a disaster.

Looks like Man uTd may have a new striker if they can agree a fee. Personal terms with Hojlund agreed.
Been agreed weeks if not months ago since the interest came about as he’s a Utd fan, it’s just Utd getting round to offering and Atalanta hopefully bringing their demands in line with ours which will undoubtedly drag on for most of the window.

There's a degree to which it depends on context. Liverpool's season after winning the title was pretty shocking but Klopp had so much goodwill in the bank that it was OK. Obviously Arteta hasn't yet won anything which is a big deal, but if for example he wins the Champions League and finishes 5th I think he's alright. Outside the top 4 and no silverware is a problem though.
