Tabletop Warhammer?

A few pictures from Games Day :)

Sorry about the quality, it was pretty poor lighting in the venue and a lot of the time I was taking pictures too far away for the flash to work well (so I had it turned off), with what were often long exposure times/high ISO's.

From memory the guy who designed it said when asked if they'd be doing the other variants that use the same hull, that they'd probably be quite different as the "current" tanks are possibly versions that have been adapted to use the last of the Hulls that the Empire can make in bulk.

Hot stuff.

In total I took about 720 pictures (going through one and half battery packs), of which most turned out ok, only a few were really bad which is pretty amazing given my poor skills and the fact that a lot of the time I was pointing and clicking very quickly.

I used to be into all the models and playing it when i was a young teenager. I used to have random models i like the look of but also a proper tyranid army. I really liked the tyranids when i first bought space hulk. I also had Gorkamaorka (i think thats how you spell it) basically like mad max.
I dont do it now else i would be made fun of and destroyed. Saying that though im currently reading the Horus Heresy series and plan on reading loads of other WH40K books as they are pretty awesome.

Anyone else getting frustrated waiting on necrons?

I've decided to start myself a new elysian army :) gona be fun to build and paint but a pain in the arse to buy

I have to say i dont like the barges much, everything else is epic to say the least,
No mention of warriors being redone unless im blind so hopefully they will stay the same as i have about 80 of them at the moment.

just saw the necron news on another site and came here to post it, exicting times.

Thou not sure i like how they look, the old necrons felt more killer robot terminater, the new ones have a little to much egyptian to them for me.

Hint...no glowing green things anymore =[

saying that one of my friends played around with different colours of plastic tubing for guass weapons, first few tried looked pretty gash, but managed to pull off a pretty good bright silver necron with blue plastic, looked pretty striking compared to all the green necrons running about

I want dreadfleet! I know it's not WH but still.

I was looking at some of the finecast models and they do look fantastic.

Especially the bloodletter.

Indeed. I'm not too keen on the barge. but the scorpion/chariot thing looks so sexy.

I'm definitely gonna have to get some of those. Only problem is I blew all of this years budget getting my Skaven army up. Bought more stuff past few weeks, cause I got bored of waiting for the Crons..

Looking good tho. so good.

Any of you guys got tips of maknig a decent gaming table/battlefield? I've got 2 work/study desks that I'll be using part time during battles and want tips on amaking them easily convertable either way :p

My top tip, dont make one giant board, make several smaller sections which you can use to form a larger board, easier to store/carry/move, you can also switch up the order of how you put the pieces together to create a new battlefield.

best ive seen are 4 or 6 tiles, more or less flat (some minor details on them, but nothing major, slight hills, etc) and then put terrian on top of the sections, dont have buildings/forests stuck to the gaming board as you end up getting a little bored of the same old stomping ground, its bores you and it bores your little guys.

Aye, several smaller boards (about 2 foot square) which can be pushed/clipped together to form a larger board is probably best, especially if you paint both sides so one side could be a generic road layout, or just a grey/black for town/cities, the other green for countryside.
Then make some scenery to go with it.
That way it can all be stacked away in a fairly small area (2x2x whatever height) when not in use.

Remember 40k games for example are usually played on anything from a 2x4 up to a 4x8 surface (if you're playing the missions suggested in the books), with 4x4 and 4x8 being the common sizes, but larger is also possible.

GW do a modular plastic gaming board, but it's very expensive (£150+) for a 4x6 set made up of 6x 2foot square tiles.

I was thinking that. What boards would you recommend? Just cheap plywood? A friend mentioned he used to use styrofoam and a lighter to forge hills and such. Anyone heard of that?

How would you base them? Just spray paint it- or pva + flock? :p

Gonna have my first game in about 5 years in a couple weeks, only 500 points- to ease us back into it :p

Not sure if I like that. Looks too 'modern' and elegant for the Marines.

Ironically the Contemptor pattern is an ancient design used before the Horus Heresy... crappy retconning if you ask me.

This and the Dreadknight make me facepalm at the state of Space Marines right now.

If you're placing it on a table or other surface you could probably get away with something like quarter inch mdf (hardboard would probably do short term, but won't hold up well), which would both be light and take up about an inch and a half when stacked (most places like B&Q will do at least two or three cuts FOC when you buy wood etc, so you could probably get an 8x4 sheet and get it cut by the store).
The main problem with the thinner sheets is they may warp easier, so if you're likely to be using it a lot then half inch, or even full inch ply/mdf/chipboard might be better..

Spray or flock is a personal choice, i think flocked looks better (certainly for grass/fields) and iirc GW do a set for about £25 with a huge bag of flock, a a large pot of green and a couple of brushes for basing their plastic battle boards (compared to their normal price for flock and paint it's great value).

Re styrofoam, I wouldn't use a lighter myself as there is too much chance of something going wrong (you do like your eyebrows?), but you can use a hot wire cutter, knives or a soldering gun with the right sort of tip to shape foam.
IIRC you will need to PVA the foam before painting if you intend to spray it at all, as the solvent in most sprays will eat the foam.

I think the idea is, and it sticks with the previous "lore", that the contemptor is older tech, which they've basically lost the ability to make.

Which goes with the whole "standard pattern template" thing (the holy grail of the tech priests being a SPT that is fully intact and functional), and with why the "ancient" and relic gear tends to be better than the current models.

Basically the Empire of man has been regressing over the millenia because no one really understands how or more importantly why certain things work and so much of it has become a ritual, with advances/questioning why it works strongly discouraged.

It also goes with what one of the FW guys said about the "old" rhino, basically as they see it, it's likely that most of the variants were originally distinct individual models, but as they lost the ability to make them they modified the rhino chasis to keep the basic thing available.

My sister's brother(Partner.. not brother :p) works in a hardware store/builders yard- so getting it source/cut won't be too tricky.
I just need it to be mobile as my gaming area is in my loft room- which requires a ladder to reach.

I have a lot of different types of flock (got it from Waylander games) but not enough for a full table top. Can you link me the GW pack? Their website can be a bit tricky to navigate if you're not sure where to find things.

I'll steer clear from the foam then- and only use it to make hills etc :p Thanks for the tips- Really can't wait to get a field up and running.
